I thought all three of the males were huddling up to warm the chick and I was thinkin "That's pretty smart, good job men." Until it turns out they were fighting over it.
Actually these are females. The males have passed the chick to the female to look after while they make the long journey to get food. It is the females who lost their chicks who are fighting, even attempting to steal chicks from other mothers.
Dvach Nope, they're males. The females lose most of their energy from producing the eggs and therefore pass them over to the males who have enough energy to survive the winter.
All of u who wondering why they didnt help the chick is: 1. documentary, so they're trying to catch nature in its purest form. 2. Those are stationary cameras so no one is actually there.
@@bigboi4427 Yes, it is. According to the Antarctic Treaty, it is illegal to even touch any Antarctic wildlife. You have to remain at least 9 feet away from penguins, unless they approach you.
@@eblackadder3 Now I know if I'm ever in Antarctica and see a chick penguin abandoned and looking for warmth, that I should just pretend to be a penguin and fool it into approaching me.
Some are wondering why the camera man isn't helping... It's literally their job not to interfere with nature and capture nature in its rawest form. If a nature documentary featured a man shooting a cheetah because it was about to kill a gazelle, not only would it have large effects on the environment, but the intention of capturing the natural order of things gets thrown away.
+Anna Glenn Watching the poor baby freeze to death was painful enough; It was so desperate for love and warmth. But what was worse was watching the desperate adults crush and kill the poor little one because they all wanted their own babies so badly.
***** Mostly it just fascinates me how penguins can feel emotions so deeply. I studied to be a biologist in college so animal relationships have always been a huge interest to me. Then I curled into a ball and cried for, like, nine hours.
NiennaArnatuile I know!! Oh my god...did you watch "March of the Penguins"? That scene where the mama's baby dies and so she tries to steal another mama's baby broke my heart! And then all the other moms beat the tar out of her because she broke the sacred Penguin Code. ;;
Is it just me or does 100 miles seem like overkill? I just looked and their top walking speed is 1.7 MPH. They probably average a little less on their journey at around 1.5 MPH. I mean Jesus. I would just give up.
Thats nonsense. Your "will" is just prioritizing between your instincts, that is suppressing some so that you can better follow others. If you want something, than that means you pick whatever you consider to be the most rewarding for you in the long run, or the short run if you dont have any vision of the long run. But you cant choose what is rewarding to you and what isnt. Just like an animal cant. And thats "instinct". And the reason why the penguins walk so far is because they have to. The reason why you wouldnt is because you dont have to.
If humans didnt have instincts then they wouldnt need any reasoning skills or willpower. reasoning and willpower are tools for following your instincts more efficiently. If humans werent guided by instinct, they also wouldnt need willpower. Because willpower is nothing but supressing one urge in order to better follow another. Its choosing between instincts, not replacing instincts. Example: If the Ape doesnt want to eat the banana, he doesnt need to stack the boxes. You can "decide" to stack the boxes, but you cant decide not to be hungry. You can endure the hunger, but you cant switch it off.
The cameraman was being professional in keeping it as natural as possible. But if the cameraman interferes, then we will never know these precious documentaries. The world does not stop spinning because of 1 penguin. Harsh reality.
+Dessert Limbo I don't think I'm anything special, either. None of us are, in the grand scheme of things. That's why I get a little annoyed when I see people beat their chests over things like this, like they know best and the other 7 billion humans on the planet aren't as smart as they are. It's preposterous.
WOW! He said @ 0:56, "The males, after their 4 month ordeal, near to starvation and desperate to feed, have to walk 100 miles or so back to the open sea." In other words, the males had to babysit for 4 entire months, without eating, until the mother returns from the sea. That is freaking INSANE!!!! Penguins ROCK!!!!
@@nddavi58 not really. Not only does the male have to keep an eye on Junior, he sits there and gets all puffy and out of shape. Then he has to walk 100 miles for his next meal.
It may be heartbreaking to watch, but keep in mind that this happens no matter if humans are close by or not. It's important to not interfere with nature and let it has its course. Obviously helping a deer from drowning in your pool or a crippled bird from getting killed by other predators or hit by a car, is acceptable. These are circumstances where the animals are out of their normal habitat. The penguin lives in the freezing cold, keep that in mind. The other penguins could have helped it, but they didn't. The camera is probably a stationary one, remotely controlled by a nearby station. For a cameraman to be out there in the freezing cold, with the proper equipment, even they cannot survive being out in the storm for very long, just as the chicks. Freezing storms reaching ~90kph(or 55MPH), is something you do not want to be in.
Seal Pics Maybe you missed the part; "These are circumstances where the animals are out of their normal habitat." The moment we interfere, we'd have thousands upon thousands of wild animals who needs somewhere to go. Most zoos and wildlife centers are packed as it is. Please do offer a solution to this problem if you have one! Oh and lets not forget that for every animal you rescue, there need to be a person with expertise to handle it. You need to look past the whole "oh it's a poor wild fluffy animal, lets help it" situation and see the big picture. Did you know that global warming causes baby penguins in certain areas to die. Up to 50% actually. That's more than a few thousand each breeding season!
Sad about the baby penguin but even sadder how ignorant some comment here ☹️. People seems to forget (or ignore) the fact that the Penguin Population is in Millions! Some Species even has Population about 22 Million (Macaroni penguin), and in this case is the Emperor penguin which about 600.000 Population. And did you know that on breeding season the average death-rate is about 35%, which is roughly about 105.000 baby Emperor penguin die each season. that just how nature work, select the best to survive, and some people blame camera guy for not helping 1? with what?? walk 100 miles to catch fish and feed them all for the duration of 3-4 months? God, hope they realize how ignorant their comment is.
Christian Wangke we need to help, we don't have to be greedy or not caring at all. Is it human or animal it doesn't matter, in order to keep this world good enough (sadly it isn't), at least we can try. Weaker species don't always have to die, we can help them to be stronger, healthier...
I agree man... All these vegans wanting nature to be dominant over humans but boy let's all hate on the cameraman because he didn't help the one chick of a wild animal which has a big population, in conditions which are dangerous to humans. The hypocrisy is unreal. If you feel so bad about this why don't you go out and start your own Penguin chick foundation. I'm sure at some point the triggered leftists want nature documentaries to be banned because of the animals featured in them not making it.
Being a nature cameraman is arguably the hardest job in the world. Some never come back the same emotionally as they can easily develop PTSD, penguin traumatic stress disorder
I'm NotHere At first I was like, "Man this guy is being very professional and seems really legit." But then I ended up laughing much harder than I probobly should have XD
John DinDompa You would *NEED* special equipment, or otherwise, they cannot touch the penguin because the oil on a human's hand can actually kill a penguin if it is touched. I know this for a fact because I study marine biology and paleontology.
MasterHappychipmunk Well they go to the sea to eat regardless, but if they lived close to the coast, I hardly think a leopard seal or orca is going to run after them on land.
Is it bad that I lowkey giggled when I saw those three adult penguins looked pretty uninterested at first and then a few minutes later they started fighting over it? Like jeebuz "no mercy to the chick and I shall be the one to give kindness and love it."
Seeing this really gets you thinking, on how precious life Is, and how life is unforgiving to those who are cursed with the misfortune of the inability to be strong in the face of impossible odds. In nature, it seems that the weak really do perish.
They are just as good as they need to survive. If the other parent don’t return four months as expected, the babysitting parent will abandon the chick to seek food or it will die of starvation. The abandoned chick has to find new parent like in this video. Some lucky ones succeed while many die from exposure to cold temperature or crushed by others like here.
Humans don’t kill babies for fun... i don’t know who told you this, but humans are much more capable of feeling and emotion than any other species on the planet.
Humans who kill babies are probably the most condemned and disgusting people of our species. People dont just kill babies and no one cares, everyonr cares.
This title is such a bait and switch, you think it will be a heart warming video of a poor orphan baby being adopted. But its not. Its heartbreaking. Despite everything, if I was out on the ice and saw an abandoned penguin, you bet your ass I'd rush over, scoop it up, put it under my coat and take it back to base. My instinct to protect is very strong, especially for birds. I currently have 5 rescue pigeons, two of which were abandoned chicks I hand raised
If you know much about penguins you know every single abandoned/orphaned chick fails to survive. Every adult penguin that loses a partner is forced to abandon their chicks. Chicks face a very high likelihood of failing to survive until adulthood.
You a dumbass bitch and a blind person look at the title it literally says "abandoned baby penguin looking for new mother" what happened in the video? Yea he looked for a mother
P1: "Phew, being a dad is hard man." P2: "I feel you bro, wanna catch sum to eat?" P1: "Sure, nearest spot i know is *100 miles* south." P2: " *Bet* ."
It literally looked like as if it was saying "I am lost and it's very cold. Can you please warm me up?" 🥺 oh my god I actually cried soo much when it got buried under the snow 😭😭😭😭
It's so interesting how penguins are capable of verbal communication with eachother, coordination, and even child abandonment or adoption. Such an interesting little bird.
I used to watch these documentaries with my dad all the time, and always understood why the cameramen never stepped in. It amazes me that some people on here believe they should help. Nature never favors the weak. Natural selection is real people.
Evolution is not about being weak or strong, but rather how best one is suitable for their environment. (In this case the mother probably got eaten, and so the father had to abandon it or die and not reproduce again.) But getting back to the point, if you had a big strong Elephants, and they got cut off to an island, then they will die out and the smaller version will survive. Not because it's physically stronger, but because the environment just does not provide for the big strong massive elephant.
