Despite often being overlooked, I'm a huge fan of Claudius personally. Ignoring the huge impact his reign had on the empire, this video focuses on the life and personality of the man, his friends, his lovers and his family.

Such was life for uncle Claudius. Probably the only princeps in the Julio-Claudian dynasty after Augustus who isn't absolute batsh*t crazy.

Someone should do a TV series about his life. Maybe call it, "I, Claudius". Check it out if you can. Truly some of the best TV ever made.

It feels from the way you tell the story that Claudius may have had autism alongside other physical, mental, and neurological disabilities. The obsessive interests, the gaffes, social skill problems and his reliance on confidants like Narcissus to explain social stuff, his general disregard or disinterest for social norms, alongside his ability to be highly intelligent and competent at certain times. It would be wonderful if we had his autobiography so we could understand Claudius on his terms and learn more about a very unique, and ultimately good, roman emperor.
@generichistory
@generichistory 3 года назад
Yeah I think that's more than likely. It would certainly explain why the Romans (who had no idea what autism was) wouldn't understand how a man could be so intelligent and yet so socially inept.

We do have the Robert Graves novels. Which are of course fiction. At one point in my life I read a lot of Robert Graves. He was a very strange man with oddball perceptions. His Greek Myths is way out there. The I Claudius novels present a coherent personality. At least some of it matches what you write about. And now that I know something about autism spectrum,yes I think it distinctly possible.

Claudius was certainly one of the most underrated emperors. He took Britain quite easily when Caesar had so many troubles. He had a decent list of accomplishments and was no bigger tyrant than any other middle of the road Roman emperor. Hewas moderately fair. I think he's closer to the five good emperors than he is farther. I always give number one to Trajan and then you have to have Augustus near the top but I think after that it's open to interpretation and Claudius isn't very far from it.😊

I like everything about Claudius. (I don't say about many emperors or even people for that matter). That fact that NOBODY except a handful of people gave him a chance. That he was close with people that were so called "beneath" him. Probably for the biggest tear jerker is that he was SO FORGIVING, especially in this time period. Thank you so much for another great vid ma dude

He knew what it felt like to be judged for mistakes, sometimes not even made consciously. He didn’t want to pass on that judgement onto others. Shame he never got a divination.

The story of Claudius being poisoned by Aggripina is not really credible as the details around it should be the exclusive knowledge of Aggripina and the doctor. And as the plot was successful, why should this knowledge have been spread by the conspirators?

I saw a movie that suggests Claudius may have exaggerated or feigned physical and mental disabilities earlier in his life to avoid being seen as a threat to those fighting the imperial succession.

Claudius suffered from some kind of disability, most likely, but at the same time was intelligent enough to learn and write books. I think his humility actualy shown how great man he was - He was humble to the point of being too humble for his own good sometimes.

I'm sorry but I am an American anglophile and I have questions about your tea. I'm guessing that you're drinking an herbal tea or a green tea or something that doesn't involve milk, just from the look of your mug? Is it common for folks in Great Britain to leave the tea bag in the tea while they're drinking it? I would say it definitely isn't here. Also if it's black tea or just regular British tea would the tea bag be left in or is that something more to do with an herbal or green tea? When I drink tea I tend to go with something like Yorkshire tea and I like it to be as strong as possible but I never leave the tea bag in and I use a good amount of milk and artificial sweetener. Sometimes sugar.😊
@generichistory

This tea was Green Tea if I remember correctly. If it were Black Tea I wouldn't leave the teabag in and I like just a drop of milk. Good choice in tea btw, Yorkshire tea/Dorset tea are the best brands out there!
