Why would someone buy a television when they don't have enough money for food? And why do students from poor backgrounds seem to struggle in school? By asking deceivingly simple questions like these about the choices that poor people make, Esther Duflo found some surprising answers that have revolutionized the field of development economics. Hear from the youngest ever co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics on In Conversation.

As a Canadian senior retired from the public service I can say with certainty there is a shifty government practice called "Existing Funding" which is taking the money budgeted for one item and using it for an entirely different purpose. A good example on this would be taking money budgeted for Learning Disabled Students and instead spending it on sports and band equipment or School Board's out or country travel expenses. "Existing Funding" means the less fortunate are getting ripped off for extravagant spending.

The most eye-opening part of the interview was the interviewer’s view that the public views poor underachieving students as lazy. Since I have not heard that before, it could be her own personal bias or one from her part of the world. Bizarre.

I think she was simply generalizing in this context, but there are certainly poor people who are lazy. Let's compare a man working as a janitor and living in a shabby house with a jobless man who happens to be homeless as well. They are both poor, but that doesn't mean the janitor is lazy because he has a job and shelter, it's just that the money he earns is not enough to live comfortably. On the other hand, the jobless and homeless man is lazy because as all he does is laze around all day. With this logic, there are definitely lazy poor students out there who simply chose not to try than "being left behind due to the design of the curriculum" as she makes it out to be.

A must-hear conversation for the struggling American and British middle class people who blame the poor for their problems. Poverty, I have always believed, is a lack fo cash. Give them cash and the security that cash will always be available when they need, and the'd turn their lives around. No, they are not innately irresponsible. The bad decisions they made were because of poverty, not the cause of it. You'd make terrible decisions too if you became poor due to a few strokes of bad luck.

giving them free money will make them lazy. They will make less money, less ambition and poor work ethics with the donating money and it will make them even poorer. what the poor lacking is ambition.

The patronizing tone is staggering! Yes, poor people want tasty food too, what a shock! And keep referring to "them" (less well off people) throughout the interview as though they were a different breed of people. I heard the host is an experienced broadcaster, but her experience is not showing here

the biggest enemy of charity is paternalism
@benw4361
@benw4361 Год назад
paternalism is necessary to educate, so i would disagree. coming from poverty and now being upper class income, I would not have learned all of the good habits and knowledge I have now if I wasn't obligated to do so based on my agreement with the state to receive financial support for my education.

Tasty food means rich ????...huh????.😱🇸🇬👁️👁️
@crazyandstupitme
@crazyandstupitme Год назад
Not that tasty food means rich but people won't associate the tastier (possibly pricier) food with the poor. Or even have the thought they the poor shouldn't spend on better food because they should accumulate it for other purchases that gives them the opportunity to earn more

Muhammad Qasim saw this dream on 31st of August 2022, he says: In this dream I am amongst some people who are listening to me and asking questions about my dreams. They ask me how much time is left before Qiyamah (The Day of Judgement). I say to them, “When the wars (conflict) begin, which will all be part of World War 3 and Ghazwa tul Hind, #MuhammadQasimDreams

Ummm, not if you have never had money to begin with….Have you ever been hungry knowing you have no money and no way to get money due to lack of jobs? Did you go to school as a child on lack of sleep and lack of food? Do you think you could focus on your studies in that state?
