OK. This is the Sequel to "Poorman's Power Steering on a JD".
I install this on my own John Deere LX178. Here is the first video.
• Poorman's Power Steeri...
This was a fun job as finally I get to work on my own stuff. It is like having a day off.
Tom Dewey was the original producer of this idea. Thanks Tom

I use a heat gun on those blasted rubber/plastic hub caps to soften them to remove. Then when installing I let them sit for 5 minutes in boiling water. They get nice and soft so you can expand the opening with your fingers so they slide right over the washer. Then they will shrink back to normal size as they cool off.

Hey guys, a little advice from a Surgeon; Don't use your hand as a hammer beating stuff in the shop. it's a good way to get Carpal Tunnel. And, don't get surgery done to both hands on the same day, unless yo have a very very close friend at the stall. Ha!

My D170 JD is getting its 3rd steering overhaul tomarrow. It’s always so hard to steer, I just ordered the thrust bearings like you used and will install when they come in the mail. What wears out the most is the sector gear and the steering shaft pinion gear. Saturday one of the drag link ball joints fell apart. I think your idea will be a bunch less we’re on the entire steering system.

If John Deere were smart they would build their units with the thrust bearings and proper clearance for the snap rings or, on the S240, E clips. There are two small bumps forged on the top of the tube beneath the washer. I had to grind them off to reinstall the E clip while not binding up the spindle.

Bruce, enjoyed both 'poor man' videos, thanks for the effort. I have an idea and a question for you and anyone else willing to chime in. The Dremel 'notches' are a great idea to allow grease into the roller bearings. What if I installed the top washer with slightly larger ID --or-- preferably slightly smaller OD?? Wouldn-t that allow the grease to flow to the roller bearings and eliminate the need for the notches. I intend on doing mine soon and welcome all responses/recommendations. Thanks again.

@@BrucesShop went with a SLIGHTLY larger ID washer, only used it for two hours so far. After 62 years of it I yearn for warmth. But it is home and yes it is darn pretty after a snowfall. I am up-playing it a bit but I am not lying about the cold. I always thought since the 1970s that all small engines for mowers and snowblowers should be designed to allow the electric start option. Really sucks to have to pull your ass off while trying to troubleshoot an engine that won't start. SO much frustration and exhaustion could have been avoided if all engines had that electric start option built in. The only time you should have to use the pull starter is AFTER the engine has already been running and you're out in the middle of the yard. I mean come on, are we living in a civilized modern industrial society or what? Do we still crank start our cars? uuuhhhhh, NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO hahahahahahaha
