You can use 5/16 or 3/8 hardware,if you have a bigger gate do double springs on both sides, still cheaper than a Gorilla lift and works better IMO. Ole 577 and I’m gone.....
Great idea... thanks for sharing I'm going to Lowe's tomorrow to buy the springs and other supplies. Already purchased the after market vents for the gas cans. Got that idea from your RU-vid video a couple of months ago works great. Thanks again
Man I wanna say a major thank you! Back was tired as shit from mowing and lifting gate all day now this will be a life saver. Buying springs as we speak ha
Yeah just don't open and close it from the spring side just in case lol. My spring's been on there ever since this video and they're still holding strong brother. Enjoy!
Thanks for the idea and video. Yes, less than $35 all parts 3/8” hardware and springs from Lowes. Installed this on my 5x10 utility trailer with a 48” tailgate and it works great! I don’t know why I didn’t do this years ago! Take the time and effort to install the safety cable through the springs (feed it through with the gate up, then lower the gate to get the exact length) these springs are dangerous “When” they break! Aug. 2021
I added the the cable. When the Trailer gate is shut, I feed the excess cable back into the tube of the spring, works great. When ready to use the trailer I just pull the excess out of the spring tube.
The springs are not nearly as loaded as they are on a garage door. They are just slightly assisting. I have been using this for years! i replaced the quick links once. Thanks for the safty idea!!
@@digigold6069 The excess when the gate is up, isn’t all that long, maybe 18”to24”, just flip it over into the trailer. The cable will more than save your nose. One spring will break in time and you don’t know which way it will go and if anyone is too close, they could get hurt bad.
@@paulsmith3476 I put my excess cable when closed back in the tube of the spring. Works great all I have to do is pull it back out when ready to use the trailer.
Such a cool idea i may do it on my little 4x6 that doesnt even need it. Love diy projects 2 questions Do you hear the springs rattling all day driving? Where or what do you use as sheath?
Dr. Crentist if you got the windows down you can hear it once in awhile on a rough road but not very loud at all..my gate rattles more than the springs.I don't use any sheath.
Pretty good idea. Like an idiot, I spent almost $200 for my Gorilla Lift gate assist. The only thing I see wrong with your design is IF those springs would happen to snap under high tension, it’ll take your finger off or be like a torpedo at your body. Great video! Thanks for sharing
TowerClimber81 Yeah if your worried about that you could wrap them in a sheath..I regularly check all the hardware for wear..all the parts look good after a year..I would replace the hardware after a few years to be safe. Thanks for watching!
Enjoying The Sun 577-Jersey Customs thanks for the reply! Certainly mean no disrespect to your video or design. Seriously a great idea and saved yourself $200 on a Gorilla Lift. Thanks again
Thats cool,Im glad you brought that up,because you know how it is late in the day, tired, shit happens..I have seen the springs snap before while on garage doors, they do get stretched quite a bit more in a door application but its always a safe practice to stand on the opposite side. Have a blessed season bro!!
What size drill bit did you use to drill your holes? This video has helped me a lot. Just ordered the springs on eBay for $28. Now I need the eyebolts and quicklinks. My gate is heavy as hell, the dr told me I have arthritis in my lower back so I’m getting smarter with this heavy trailer I tow everyday. I should have been did this🙄 I have an impact wrench but my trailer has the thick steel not L shaped.
Enjoying The Sun 577-Jersey Customs Ok my man, my springs arrived yesterday and I’m taking the task on today. Do I need a special drill bit other than normal to go though the gate?
I just used the black carbide bit I would go through with a smaller bit first and make a pilot hole and use some oil on it too let me know how you made out my man
Enjoying The Sun 577-Jersey Customs okay thanks, I’m headed to the hardware store now. 5/16 eyebolts and 5/16 quick links. Got cha👍 This video helped me more than any other. I’m going the same route (both sides), I even ordered the yellow top springs, I think they’re 130pds
577 Has the gate racked as a result of the springs being on one side? Im fixen to go the poor mans route, and like the idea of springs on one side. But after you used it for awhile would you put one on each side instead?
Nope years later and it's still working perfect I love it springs are getting a little weaker though and you got to change the quick links and the eyes cuz they do wear out
