Pop culture is teaching the wrong "lessons" about gender & sexuality | Kristin Lieb | TEDxSomerville

Popular culture is a cunning, persuasive - and pervasive - "educator" that influences students' ideas about gender and sexuality 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Yet Dr. Kristin Lieb believes that while teachers may only have students for a few hours a week, they can interrupt the institutionalized misogyny being spread by popular culture and teach more accurate lessons about girls and women. And the best tool to do this, Dr. Lieb says: Pop Culture itself.
Dr. Kristin J. Lieb is an Associate Professor of Marketing Communication at Emerson College. Before arriving at Emerson, Lieb held numerous marketing and business development positions in the music industry, including posts with Atomic Pop and Newbury Comics Interactive. She also worked as a researcher for Harvard Business School and as a freelance writer for Billboard and Rolling Stone. Lieb published her first book, Gender, Branding, and The Modern Music Industry: The Social Construction of Female Popular Music Stars, with Routledge in 2013.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

This is so important! I remember in my college English class, we had to write an essay about the food industry and how it effects our society. We had open discussions in class about advertising in the food industry, how our food was made, where it came from, how it effects kids, and might cause obesity, etc. It changed my whole view about the food industry and the messages advertising sends and the inner workings of the food industry. It was because of that class, my whole life changed. I was already vegan but became more conscious about what I was eating and consuming on a daily basis. Because of that, my life changed for the better.

I saw it in college in the 80s. It changed my life too and I recommend it all the time on social media. Very pleased you are recommending it here. Advertising/branding , one of the worst professions on earth.

6 years later, the only thing I can say is this aged like fine wine. 8:13 Beyonce's done with her "seductress" stage, and is a now an established diva and a provocateur who speaks out and pushes cultural boundaries. Wow.

great talk! I agree that popular music artists can be a great vehicle for class discussions about identity politics.

I can't stop looking at her unbuttoned bottom part of her jacket and wonder if it's intentional. And while at it, I ponder at the decision of not going all the way unbuttoned if she wants to have a more casual look. Ah...the mysteries of life.
