"Pop-Up" Cabin Designed to be Built in a Single Day - Ep 1

We built a lightweight DIY cabin that is designed to fit together in a single day. This makes it a great low-cost option for those wanting to build their very own cabin, especially in remote areas where it is difficult to haul in heavy materials. We used a snowmobile to transport our cabin materials to the build site, where we assembled them. Our building materials consisted of: barn boards, 2"x4" lumber, cedar strapping, tarp, vapor barrier plastic, and screws. We built the cabin upon 3 small cedar logs, which came from a nearby fallen tree.
The Pop-Up Cabin Plans (PDF file) can be purchased at Teespring:
teespring.com/en-GB/pop-up-ca...
The comprehensive plans include 18 pages of step-by-step instructions, exact measurements, and clear diagrams, which show exactly how the cabin was assembled from the ground up.
We strengthened the design by giving the cabin a proper base and roof, which means no gaps under the walls and no more ugly tarp. :)
Special thanks to my brother who worked countless hours to professionally put these plans together, even staying up till the wee hours of the morning with me to make sure that every detail was perfect. Part of the money raised from these plans will go toward compensating him for his excellent work, and the rest will go toward supporting this channel.

This is genius on so many levels. The extremely simple door design and construction; the interlocking wall boards; the rafters, being screwed together with only a single screw, so you can haul them stacked and simply unfold each one; the tarp for a quick roof, but enough structure to add metal roofing later; the overall simplicity. And on top of that, a very well shot and edited video. Thank you for sharing.

This little building is so cute!!! I love watching your videos! Your father has taught you well. It's so nice to see father & son working together, using such amazing skills to make all of those projects. You even built the ladder! (Which is probably nothing to you.) In this age of technology, most young ones are sitting behind a computer with very little hands-on experience in building. You set a nice example for all to learn from. Should have used cheap pva clear shower curtains for you r windows. I have a 3 season porch with shower size windows and they hold up all winter in the northeast cold and snow. With the wind and weather .they are also crystal clear. Just a suggestion.great build tons of thought. Love your videos

Yes, we have an interior rear entry door with a storm door entry seldom used. The inner wood-framed draft door is from a shower curtain that's lasted 30 years without cracking. Of course, that entry never gets direct sunlight that probably would have ruined the still supple vinyl.
@claudermiller
@claudermiller 4 года назад
True. After a while you probably would get claustrophobic. I bought an old abandoned country house with almost every window pane broken out. (27 panes of glass) I bought a couple rolls of clear vinyl and depended on that until I could replace everything.

Or Make a window with plexiglass. If a Bear came by, it would be 1 swipe and plastic is gone. Then just afix a fold down shutter to close window off when gone. Very nice little cabin, and easy to construct. Great job. Is it around 8x12?

For a bit of added privacy in our screen porch I added a portion of a shower curtain behind the couch. You can sit and still look out the screen portion but the couch itself can not be seen from the outside. That way if you want to sleep out there in the summer you have a bit of privacy. Because they get exposed to the elements all year round I usually replace them each spring. And these are the cheap ones, not the heavier type. LOL, thought I was the only one to think of using shower curtains. You guys rock!

@916619jg
@916619jg 4 года назад
Tiny homes for the homeless were considered here but the fire marshal can't sign off on any residence that doesn't have egress windows and other safety codes. To give a homeless person a tiny home should be something they could sell after some amount of time and if the tiny home doesn't meet normal building codes it won't have any resale value. This would bring down the value of any neighborhood. if anybody thinks that we should be giving homeless tiny homes then they should totally build a homeless person a safe dwelling in their backyard... I won't be virtue signaled into paying for a deathtrap community. There are better ways to help
@nannettefreeman7331
@nannettefreeman7331 4 года назад
@Amber you're confusing the cause with the effect. Homeless people turn to alcohol & drugs as a coping mechanism. You try waking up to the same dismal reality day after day, month after month, repeatedly let down by a system that is not working, persecuted by law enforcement, hated by the majority of mainstream society, strangers who don't even know you or how you came to be homeless, with no hope of improvement, or even CHANGE, in sight, & see if you don't reach out for something, ANYTHING to escape this hopeless reality & its bleak outlook, if only in your head, & make you feel "good," however temporary that feeling is or ultimately harmful the means may be. Remove the people from the environment that drives them to drink & get high, & they will quit, just like 90% of Vietnem Veterans who were addicted to heroin during the war did when they returned home to their families & meaningful & fulfilling lives, without rehab or any treatment program at all. As for mental illness, when did it become alright here in America to neglect the infirmed who cannot help themselves? I guess when Ronald Reagan shut down all those psychiatric facilities & put the patients out in the streets to begin with, rather than reforming the mental health system as he should have. Many people have the same misconception as you with regard to drug & alcohol use among the homeless, & that is a big part of this ever-increasing problem. The more you understand about an issue, the better equipped you will be to deal with it. No one wants to try to gain more understanding about the homeless problem, though. They just want it to go away, & it simpy doesn't work like that.
