This was super helpful. I'm re-doing a room in my apartment and was wondering what to do about the ceiling. Now it's time to make a hawk. Thanks Duke!

You're so welcome. It's one of my favorite ceiling textures. It's relaxing to sit down and look up and try to make out the faces or whatever that may appear. 😀

Thanks, diy Duke. I've never seen that technique before and I really like the way it goes.

If you are going to do a lot of this, buy a dedicated corded drill to mix the mud. Mixing a lot of mud with a cordless drill will burn out the motor really quick. Also, if you scrape all the way down to the drywall, you want to make sure you get all the glue and other residue off from the popcorn. Wipe it down with a sponge mop and simple green, then wipe it down again with just water and then prime it after it is completely dry. The first ceiling I scraped looked great when I was done, so I only filled in the low spots, then sanded and painted it. About a month later I had a bunch of areas where the paint was peeling. Going back and fixing this after the kitchen was completely remodeled was a royal pain. Also, if it's an old house where the drywall is held in by nails, you may want to go back and add some drywall screws then point in the nail heads that poke out after the ceiling is tight against the ceiling joists. The drywall nails will work themself loose over the years. I personally don't like the look of skip troweling. I know a lot of people like the look, but to me it just looks like somebody didn't know what they were doing or was lazy. For real skim coating (smooth finish), I would recommend using a skim coating blade (I like Marshalltown blades) and a roller. You can attach the skim coat blade to a long handle, so no ladders or stilts needed. Thin the drywall mud down, rolling on and then smooth it out with the blade in one direction. I find hitting the large flat areas first is best, then after that is dried, going in and fixing the corners. Using a corner trowel will give you near perfect corners if you are inexperienced with drywall mudding. Always make sure your drywall mud is completely dry before sanding. If it is still wet underneath when you sand, it will pull in the drywall mud in any low spots like nail or screw heads and you will see it when dry. They key to getting a good finish is to make sure you use a light going across the wall to show any imperfections. The flat finish of drywall can hide a lot of issues that won't show up until you put on the paint. This is why cheap housing uses flat paint finishes on the walls. If you use eggshell or anything glossy, all those imperfections will pop out as soon as you paint..

Thanks, really good tips! One thing I'd mention is that Structo-Lite® Basecoat Plaster would yield a niceroof surface. It is a mill-mixed, lightweight, perlite-aggregate gypsum plaster that gives it a high insulation factor. It's plastic working material will conform to various designs and help achieve durability in walls and ceilings. However, since it is a plaster, it needs 30 days curing before painting.

I had a lot of high end builders in the 9os and 2000s. This technique was actually popular on new construction. We did what was called a "Two Tone brocade" . We shot orange peel or a splatter on the ceiling, they would paint the it, then we would hand texture over over it creating two different tones and two different sheets. It looked very fancy.

I scraped a small bath and i struggled so hard. I was so worried to wet it too much, but it seems i didnt do it enough. My worry came from how crummy my '85 house is. Keep finding new things...the lack of insulation on the east side of the houses exterior walls, no consistency with stud spacing (im not even kidding, its bad).

I'm surprised that you still do scrape downs. Those were the jobs that I took when I first started because no one else would do it lol I always ended up skimming everything with green. Texture has become a dying art in Ontario Canada. These days everything is just a level 3 finish with the decor being white, on white, on white lol
