Thank you for this lovely tribute and prayer. Had I met traditionalists like you around 2014, I probably wouldn’t have developed a jaundiced eye toward the TLM. Back then, sensing a lot of alienation and division between Catholics in Michigan, I started attending Latin vespers on Saturdays, followed by masses. My intention was to understand Catholics who experienced the faith in a way different from me. However, I quickly came across a lot of people who treated the OF with scorn and contempt. It felt like they considered everything following the council to be worthless. Even discussing biblical exegesis, I had to look back to Pius XII’s Divino Afflante Spiritu to justify applying contemporary historiographical techniques. At the time, I was a street evangelist and was shocked by one guy’s saying that the TLM liturgy alone would be a huge way to bring people back to the faith. While I can appreciate that reflecting many traditionalists’ experiences, I know many other Catholics who don’t agree. My experience with traditionalists in my area left me with an odd feeling of thinking both that they were misguided and that they looked down on me and others who did not share their devotion to all things Tridentine. You two are a breath of fresh air. While I’m still not a TLM-trad, I do very much appreciate tradition more generally. As to the problems in the modern secular world, I focus much more on the material conditions that push our economy and culture to prioritize individual incomes and autonomy over any traditional connections like family or church. Pope Benedict, pray for us!

So well put guys. Great discussion & very lovely understanding of the person, the faith and reason of Pope Benedict. He sure loved and lived his faith... Agree on Islam, with the greatest of respect the view of God and reality is very very physical and not quite right, tilted too far imo Jesus I love you! ❤ Gorgeous! There's a new phrase goin around called 'glad trads'...I like it! You two are Happy Catholics, so nice, and love the good the true and the beautiful - Liturgy too, all weighed not for their own singular value but for their true & proper purpose...revelation of God! So cool to have come across your channel, who's going to pass on this timeless Faith? ...it's always been just normal folk who are honest, and by faith we know that Jesus calms the storms in His own good time. Lovely Tribute!

Beautiful reflection on the legacy of B16. I also really appreciate anyone who recognizes the inextricable causal link between Protestantism and modern secularism/relativism. I was going to comment about that, but then you went right into it yourself. Puts Protestantism in a whole new light when you can see the logical consequences of it. Many Protestants have to see that their house is on fire first before they start looking for a new home.

Absolutely loved this video (also your Taylor Marshall / justification video). 2 questions (if you can): -Where can you find Pope Benedict XVI on Luther (is there one place or is it spread out)? -Where are some good books / places to read on the freedom of a Christian / justification. I've read a bit on this subject, but that video blew my mind and I clearly need to read more. Thank you!

Good to learn more about Pope Benedict.......I was so happy he was voted in after St. John Paul....whom I dearly loved......He was in charge of The Doctrine of Faith under John Paul....so I knew he would not sell us down the river. He was considered conservative and very well grounded.

Excellent discussion, brothers, really appreciate your personal developments on aesthetics in general. Crazy how similar our journeys are, leaving right around the same year, with the only major difference is that I didn’t go fully Anglican before returning home to the Church.

What form of Protestantism did you come out of?

@@TheCatholicBrothers Initially a more generic non-denominational bible church in 2004 that I got introduced to through Campus Crusade for Christ friends while in college. After that I got involved in a more missional reformed neo-Calvinist church (young, restless and reformed movement) before re-entry to the Church with my wife who was confirmed in 2020. Really appreciate your informed but measured approach, especially regarding the controversies of the day.

I think what moved Benedict from liberal to conservative was the 1968 student upheavals in Europe?

Truly speaking in Catholicism, traditionalism and liberalism are not genuine categories. What matters is orthodoxy, the true will of God for us, for his Church. You may brag on being a traditionalist or liberal all you want, but the true question you should ask yourself is: Is this true? Is this true Catholicism? Is this orthodox? Is this the will of the Father?

I think Pope Benedict XVI is ultimately a tragic figure, but it's not my place to judge him. Similar to Trump, traditionalists/conservatives put their hopes in him to clean house, but that never came to fruition. It's time we accepted that no deus ex machina is coming to save us (in a material sense). We must embrace chaos and act as its agents when we can. You guys are a credit to your grandfather.
