About the pope's position on gender theory not fitting his narrative...I kind of think it does. His embrace of the LGBT community never meant that he condoned nontraditional sexual behavior. He is Jesus's representative here and now, and like Jesus, he is welcoming to every human person who seeks his blessing. Also like Jesus, Francis is more critical of sins of the spirit (pride, greed, self-righteousness, hypocrisy) than he is of sins of the flesh. I would say Francis's narrative is very consistent along these lines. To counter the suggestions from that letter from the anonymous Cardinal, we shouldn't pit compassion against justice/clarity/Tradition but, instead, practice compassion in light of justice/clarity/Tradition. The era of simplistic binary evaluations is long gone. BTW, Mr. Allen. your economy with words and the way you express yourself are as vibrant and entertaining as Pauline Kael was as a writer. I detest the implication that people who criticise Francis do so because they hate and fear homosexuality or that they are small-minded. That's not Catholic teaching and never was. Spare us the modernist rhetorical calumny of "simplistic binary evaluations" Increased homosexual acts and the normalising of homosexuality are signs of a society facing imminent catastrophe according to Scripture. In addition, homosexual acts individually are a grave threat to the Soul. You'd never glean that from Pope Francis' rhetoric and he fails those people who are active homosexuals baptised or not. He also fails solely homosexually inclined Catholics who live chaste lives.
The only thing the Church could do to avoid confusion is do nothing or stay away from thorny issues! Fortunately, this Pope hasn’t chosen that path but confront it. God bless him.
Even if it is not intended by the Holy Father, he does cause a good dose of confusion or at least a good head scratch. The sheer amount people voicing this concern are not just making it up. Do some people over react? Sure. Do some people under react, doubley sure.
I think it would have more eloquent had he dismissed LGBT activists like Fr. James Martin, Sr. Jeanine Gramick, Fr. Timothy Radcliff and so many others, instead of honoring or promoting them, and so stirring more and more confusion with great consequence for the whole church.

Should we take exception to this "anonymous" article? Is there any doubt? Whoever, and here we are speaking of a Cardinal, no less, who lacks the courage of his convictions, because he fears retribution (whatever that means), ought to be told that he either keeps quiet or drops the mask and speaks up with dignity (because he is dealing with matters of Faith) and humility (because any other way is conceit). When are we going to realize that one thing is the "substance" of the Gospel and the other are the "formulations" that are translated to the times we live in. Is being faithful to the "Tradition" another term for "Immobility"?
Who's "we"? Are you even Catholic? ' Read the article. It makes plain why it was written anonymously. It was forward looking focused on the message rather than the messenger. Tradition capital 'T' as opposed to catholic tradition small 't' refers Sacred Tradition - the Apostles’ teachings; the church or community’s faith in Jesus Christ; the celebration of the Eucharist; and the prayers of the original Christian communities and the teaching of the Early Church Fathers east and west, greek and latin.
As an American Catholic, I think the seditious anti-Papal American Retro-QAtholics would have pushed me out long ago. I journalist that doesn't push a ideological bias down out throats.
