My pleasure! Thank you for taking the time to be kind! The Revelate Spinelock was AMAZING! If I was faster getting my days posted you could watch just Day 7 to see what happened to mine. It started to dent by the seatpost and then the bag dropped to only 1" above my tire and started scraping. It lasted the whole trip but it's a flawed design. I'm happy to send a pic to show you if you'd like.

@@HumanontheLoose Yeah, that Spinelock design chewed my seat post too. After that, I went with the Rockbros saddlebag with the foam spacer that hugs the seat post and never looked back. They sit firmly while my carbon seat post is pristine. They do work perfectly with carbon seat posts. Completely waterproof and if you cinch it tight it won't swing. If you pack carefully, the 2-liter difference in capacity is not an issue. Plus it costs a quarter of what the Revelate Designs cost!

WAIT STEVEN! Recently I ended up trying a rack that attaches to the seat post. (Mine is a dropper). Then I bought an XL eVent Sea To Summit Compression Dry Sack. A cargo net from Walmart to cover it and attach to rack - then two bungies which I criss-crossed for extra stability and strung my water shoes through the cord. Tons of rock...around 400 miles. Didn't move! When I got to camp I just grabbed the sack and all my camping stuff was in it. The seat packs are awesome but I loved how much I could easily shove in a dry sack and easily attach it to the rack. My point being - buy both ideas and try them out with the stuff you want to shove in it. The rack was around $30 (now $60) and sack $52 and bungies/cargo net $18. I bought 3 racks and this one was my favorite and lived up to my expectations! I did buy longer screws for it though and lock nuts. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011NJ5S3U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Interesting review, thanks… not used any of these, however the best part was the attachment which connects the bag to the seat post… definitely worth purchasing separately for any bag. I use the Apidura Seat Bag & have it currently connected to my MTB. Clearance & movement are key to any bag being ideal. I can tell you it fits & looks far better than any of the bags you’ve shown. One thing is key, how you pack the bag & also the way in which you manipulate it once attached. Happy to share a picture if it helps with what I mean :-) I have also purchased a Tailfin, however not tested it yet.

That brand was popular on my trip although Ortlieb took the award for most popular seat post bag. The brand not necessarily the model in my video. I'm done with that trip and am trying a rack instead on this next trip loading up soon after some "What I pack" videos. Sounds like you're very happy with your choice so that's awesome! I'm sure those who read comments will appreciate your referrals.

Hey there. Just watching this vid and thought I would pass on a nice hack for these rear saddle bags. This idea is adopted from the Topeak Backloader design. Topeak uses a weather resistant material for the main mounted bag, but then uses a waterproof dry bag that slides inside. However, the Topeak bag sags more than your final two picks (RD and Ortlieb). I know this because my bikepacking buddy had issues with his sagging. His saving grace is he's 6' 4" with a 61cm frame and plenty of clearance over his tire. I have the same Ortlieb bag as yours...but hate taking it on and off the bike after long days of riding. I simply adopted Topeak's methodology and bought a Sea to Summit dry bag to easily slide into the Ortlieb. This way I can leave the Ortlieb mounted when having to remove my gear. I just made sure the dry bag had an air vent to vacuum pack the items and I pack in a way where the inner dry bag mimics the shape of the Ortlieb...usually with some soft stuffed gear in the nose the take up all usable space in the outer Ortlieb. A plus is they are both waterproof. Hope this helps.

Finally a comment the robots approved. Thanks for the helpful info! Nice idea! My new setup is a stronger seat post rack vs one in video, also doing a Sea to Summit eVent with a cargo net over. Super excited to try it out on my mountain bike trip this July.

I always used panniers and a handlebar bag for road bicycle touring. Panniers might be good for trail cycling. It would be necessary to connect the panniers to a rack with zip ties.

I had problems with the Ortlieb because it never held its shape. It sagged so badly on a trip that it rubbed against my tire and wore holes in it. I blame the air bleed valve which I think isn't quite as airtight as it should be and leaked air which caused the sag. I now use the Rockbros bag and absolutely love it.

just wondered does it make mounting the bike harder? (ie swinging your leg over when first getting on bike) I already struggle a bit to get on a high saddle on my road bike.
@HumanontheLoose
@HumanontheLoose Год назад
Great question! It depends on your style bike. If your center bar is on a strong angle you can tilt your bike and step through and over. I was riding a Salsa Cutthroat Apex and had to swing my whole leg up and over. It was fine but definitely a workout in difficult sections where I was constantly dismounting/remounting. I’m not sure if you can have one of these installed or if you have to buy a whole new bike to get one but my mountain bike has a “dropper post.” It makes the bike more expensive but some people drop them to the lowest spot, get on their bicycle, then bring the saddle back up.

Great review Is there any way you could give me a measurement from your seat rails to the bottom of the bag when it on your bike. Measured on a angle like they do for the A measurement for fit on the revelate site. Revelate will not give me that measurement. Their A measurement shows a minimum of 9.5” on the angle from seat rails to the tire. I’m short and do not have that much room but most images including yours show quite a bit of room, just looking for some help on this.

Sorry but I don't have the bike/bag anymore. You might want to watch an episode titled "A 44 Mile Downhill Bike Ride." The thumbnail is me with a mosquito net over my head. I think I show you the bag after it's been used for a bit. I recommend watching that. The bag really wasn't mean't for my bike setup and I'm 5'10" so my seat was high. I'd recommend buying it from REI which offers free shipping if you don't live near one. Then put it on your exact bike and see. They have a wonderful return policy.

This was my first backpacking trip (Season 1) so I was going with what people were using. Season 2 (my current Weekly uploads) I went with what you’re mentioning because of my experience with not liking using a seat pack. The true test was how the rack would hold up on super rocky single track and it held up beautifully but of course that’s based on the rack I chose to buy and how well I installed it. I think it’s all subjective just like everything in life what works for one might not work for another and vice versa. Happy you brought this up!

I can’t tell you about others choices I can certainly share my own. My trip was initially based on bikepacking NOT bike-touring. Under these circumstances I would be traveling on single track and and dirt through forests. I would’ve never gone with panniers and after doing the trip I’m thrilled I didn’t especially for areas I was in the road. I went with the Revelate Spinelock which did not wobble at all based on its design attachment. If I was going to be traveling on pavement touring around and wanted more stuff with me I would go with Panniers.

@@HumanontheLoose I agree; when minimum width is required to navigate challenging terrain, of course you must maintain the narrow profile provided by products like the Revelate Spinelock. When maneuverability is not an issue and you have to carry a heavy load, panniers become essential.
