A couple of really low maintenance Calatheas that I’ve found are the Freddie and the rufibarba. I rarely water mine maybe like once every two weeks and mine are doing great. Barely any brown crispy tips. So if you are looking for a low maintenance beautiful one, I would recommend those.

I cater to the needs of a lot of orchids that need special attention, but calatheas are really much much worse, maybe because orchids are much slower growing and don't spit out crusty leaves like they are spamming you with poo emojis.

"I cant get my hoyas to stop bloom" is something I never thought I'd hear anyone say, hahah. orchids are the most boring plant if you dont get them to bloom. when i see them in the store, i wanna buy it but i've never gotten one to bloom twice so it's no use buying them for me
@ofhismercy109
@ofhismercy109 2 года назад
Phalaenopsis bloomed for me after I learned they need 62° F overnights, minimum. Bonus when I started setting my thermostat to that my Vanda bloomed after caring for it 5 or 6 years (first time ever since I purchased it in bloom), although with the Vanda I was also giving it warm baths everytime I watered it, about body temperature. That was it, easy, just lowered the bedtime thermostat. It is so much more fun when they bloom for you, I agree! Also, FYI it was an immediate response in my phals.....I remember they put out tiny spikes within 2 days, amazing
@BuenosDiasPlants
@BuenosDiasPlants 2 года назад
@@ofhismercy109 Wait, this is interesting. Im trying to make one phalaenopsis re-bloom. So they like cold-ish temperatures at night?
@ofhismercy109
@ofhismercy109 2 года назад
@@BuenosDiasPlants yes, this was easy to give them in Idaho, at least with the ones that were essentially waiting for those nighttime temperature drops to send up flower spikes. That is their signal. I just set the overnight thermostat to 62°F. That was enough. I would not go under 60° and not over 64°. Some of my collection spiked immediately, others didn't and I think that was because they were maybe summer bloomers. The winter bloomers spiked. This was in the autumn. The temperature was the key for me. That was really the first success I had getting them to rebloom. A friend of mine who had tons of success blooming orchids mentioned offhand to me later how she loved sleeping cold and never had her thermostat over 60° at night. I didn't learn this from her but the data and experiences coincided. Both my vanda and several phals flowered. Good luck to you!

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve bought over 30 new pieces over the past two months. Husband thinks I’m crazy but I fully expect the number of them will be reduced over the next 6-12 months . Like the Calatheas I bought some time ago and only have the last one. So ridiculously high maintenance in all regards that I’m not touching one in a shop ever again regardless of how pretty they look.

When I was pregnant with a boy (didn’t happen with my girl) everything made me nauseous and smells bothered me so much. I love bacon. The smell of bacon suddenly made me run to the bathroom and wretch my guts out violently. I love my husband. He doesn’t smell bad. Suddenly the smell of him turned me off to the point that I had trouble hugging him. It was truly weird, because none of this happened prior to being pregnant with my son. Pregnant with daughter? None of these issues, completely different pregnancies in every way. After the baby boy was out-I was golden. I could fry bacon and hug the man without issue 😂

Hormones changing absolutely changes smelling. I know couples, personally know couples, who break up because once the woman started the pill, she couldn’t get turned on anymore because he no longer smelled good and in fact smelled “bad” to her. I began progesterone recently, and I’ve noticed that on random days my husband will smell bad; he’s a clean man and smells WONDERFUL, but on random days I can’t stand the smell. The other day I was near a bakery and the smell of coffee and fresh bread smelled like chemicals or burning plastic. Bread and coffee!!! Two of the most wonderful smells isn’t here world. Luckily this isn’t every day or even often.

I think Orchids get a bad rep pretty often. I see them being referred to as grandma plants in the plant groups I'm in (which is true for me as well, my grandma always had them and it's the reason I got into them). But there's so many interesting species with lots of different colors and flower shapes. I love mounting them to pieces of wood and getting them to bloom is so rewarding to me. I wish everyone could get the same gratification out of them!

The only thing I regret is purchasing a calathea before I understood how to take care of them because it died within 2 weeks, and also purchasing a pack of baby lithops instead of just getting well established ones because those also didn't make it. BUT, even with the list of plants that I didn't do well with and they died or I gave them away, I still love having gotten to learn from it all, so it's hard to say that it's a true regret. Thanks for sharing your opinions, I love to hear stuff like this and see if I feel the same or not :)

I love lithops, but there's alot you need to know about them before taking them on. I hope you give them another try sometime! I pot mine in straight pumice, they only get some water when they start to wrinkle and never when they begin to loose their set of leaves for the season. Their also cool season growers and go dormant around mid summer which means no water!

i’ve heard that hoyas bloom seasonally and basically it happens when they get more water after the dry season. people trying to induce blooms would want to simulate a dry season and then water more heavily after a bit, so maybe if you want to stop them blooming you should water more consistently and just keep them more hydrated! i’ve also found in my own experience that my hoyas tend to bloom when i water them after forgetting to water for a long time, so i think there’s some truth to it. good luck!

I LOVE how beautiful the BOP is, but I've refused to take her on bc I know I can't give her the space and light she needs 🥲 I think it's important to be responsible plant parents and re-home the ones we can't care for.

I completely relate to the Birds of Paradise. I live in an apartment and seeing my new leaf coming in and how tall it’s gonna be, I get worried about space. I didn’t think that it would grow so fast. It’s so pretty though! 😍

Its so funny with your peace Lily how the back is so little since it lives in the corner because my bamboo did the same. For some reason I didn't expect it and it grew and grew and one day I saw the back. So naked! 😂

I totally get you! I’ve moved this year and it’s amazing how badly some of my happiest plants were doing. Plus I also have a garden which got the bulk of my attention all summer. Part of me wishes I only had a bunch of different pothos and snake plants…lol

I completely agree with you about the hoyas. I am newly pregnant and have over 200 hoyas in my house. My least favourite hoya bloom, Hoya thomsonii is currently blooming and I hate hate hate it! I have a huge plant and I'm tempted to sell it just because of the scented blooms. But then I might regret it once I'm not pregnant anymore. We shall see!😌

Great vid. :) Can't wait to see your new little one soon! Although I haven't had the blooming issue with my hoya, I can totally see how that would cause a mess and be overwhelming with the amount of plants you have. I wonder if it's not the actual hoya but the volume? Dunno. I regret my cacti as well. I had to put them outside on the patio because of my dog. She doesn't get into my plants but she will sniff them from time to time and she's been poked a few times on the boop poor girl. :)

Strelitzia can definitly be re-balanced. Repot and turn the rootball, then refill the soil back around it. But its definitly a two person job since they are so big. And orchids can be fun! They are epiphytes so you can tie them to a piece of wood and hang it anywhere, the roots will attatch themselves like they do on trees in nature. Or let it be the table centerpiece on a cool aquarium root. They store water inside the roots so the wood and roots need to be submersed in water 30 minutes a week then allowed to drip dry. Or let them live in a pretty glass jar and watch the roots adhere themselves to the glass, and they are so pretty when newly watered and they are bright green and full of water. Or maybe a glass sphere that can hang somewhere. When you have the orchids placed high up and then you get the flowers cascading down... so pretty

Yes to the BOP! I bought a tiny baby one last year and now it’s taller than me!!! And it does lean everywhere even in a large Southern window. I need to get it out of my house before I CAN’T get it out of my house.

Congrats on the safe delivery! I've been going back and forth for a while now about decluttering my Peace Lily and Orchid. I got rid of most of my succulents and cacti a while ago and am only keeping the ones that I see active growth on: burro's tail, mother of thousands, rick rack cactus, string of tears. I have learned I only like plants that I can actually watch grow, and so I've gotten rid of a lot of the ones that are slow growers. Sorry not sorry haha

Love your videos and congrats on your new bundle of joy. As for the obliqua nodes Kaylee Ellen has a video explaining the growth pattern of obliquas and apparently sending out runners is what they do and it is extremely hard to get them to climb because they need so much humidity.

Orchids are slowwww growing. The excitement is getting them to flower once a year vs. pushing out a new leaf every couple of weeks.

Take that BOP outside in the summer, I have a 30 y/o plus BOP that was touching my ceiling, take it out all summer and all the new leaves are much more manageable height and standing straight! Make sure to cut the older leaves as new ones come in! 💚

I don't have experience with obliqua, I would love to be able to get my hands on one some day. But something you can try as an experiment is putting " crazy keiki cloning paste " its used for orchids to push out keikis but in tropical plants and other plants in general it pushes new growth from nodes as well. So my assumption is maybe with the extra nutrients and whatnot they might get bigger growth instead of the issue your having? Who knows but worth a try

Not sure if it's true, but I've heard they send out runners when there's too little humidity. They require a ridiculously high level of humidity
@josecruz021
@josecruz021 2 года назад
@@gabrielpatten6939 that's quite possible. I mean think about it, larger fenenstraitions probably have something to do with himudity. Maybe cuz naturally they would dry out easier with leaves like that so they probably do require Ron's of humidity to be happy

I have the Peace Lily sensation, mine is in a cooler hallway and the only light comes through an east facing front door. Mine stands to the side of the door in a self watering pot and it loves it there. I think they prefer a lower light situation. I think yours would be happy where it is. My regret purchases have been my Crassula species plants as I have been left with 4 plants from 18 bought. They just got decimated by something that caused their leaves to go black and then cause the plants to collapse. It wasn't overwatering as they were only watered every 3-4 weeks. I will just keep to the Ovata varieties as they're more reliable.

I understand what you are feeling with the Hoya. I recently had my lacunosa bloom and it won't stop. I'm really allergic to the flowers on the lacunosa, so I've had to cut the flowers off, not the peduncle just the flowers. It's the same allergic reaction I get to lily flowers in bouquets. So far all of my Hoya that have bloomed do not smell good to me, but I love hoya foliage so much.

God I feel you on the obliqua nodes.. I bought two for 120 each. One of them rotted in my prop box and the other one sent out a long steak of nodes before quickly dying when I tried to switch it to my soil mixture. Would've loved to have a beautiful Obliqua growing in my house but I won't spend money on that gamble anymore and I don't have the money for a pre-established plant, rip :(

I honestly completely agree with bird of paradise and orchids, i mean, what are you gonna do when the BOP outgrows the only room it could fit in? Also, orchids get BORING, they grow so slow, and after blooms, and even during blooms theyre just kinda "there."
