Population statistics are like crystal balls -- when examined closely, they can help predict a country's future (and give important clues about the past). Kim Preshoff explains how using a visual tool called a population pyramid helps policymakers and social scientists make sense of the statistics, using three different countries' pyramids as examples.
Lesson by Kim Preshoff, animation by TED-Ed.

It's horrifying that you can see the Rwandan genocide in the population pyramid in 1994, starting at 4:19. The population pyramid shrinks very quickly, and then you see a tick in the pyramid. Scary.

As of 2015, China has aborted (no pun intended) it's one child policy. What very few people realize is that the one child policy effected or applied, to just 1\3 of the population, those primarily living in eastern China. Also, most Chinese parents were allowed to have a girl first, keep them, and try for a boy during a second pregnancy. Those in rural China, accounting for more than 2/3 of the population had more than one child. Mass female abortions and even infanticide, were rare, by far, the exception not the rule. I do realize that there were atrocities committed in the name of the one child policy; a point I do want to make clear.

I like how they talk about the effects of selective abortion in China, even despite the pyramid being almost symmetrical. They also show the large number of male children born, without showing any number for girls. China's selective abortion is highly exaggerated as an issue, and the government even punishes people for this practice. If you want to make an issue of something, talk about China's number of abortions as a result of the one-child policy. 13 million a year. There are currently talks to relax the one child policy, which will hopefully quell the number of abortions.

Immigration and emigration should be taken into account. I'm personally quite happy with the declining population process- I'm sure it ends in either a collapse of capitalism as we know it or a more stable version of it with a smaller, more sustainable population. Either way I'm excited to see what happens in Europe/Japan in the coming decades.

Might this: res.cloudinary.com/heiglcqk3/image/upload/c_fill,h_60,w_60/v1375921860/gefzdwhi55kezsbqniwk.jpg be the elusive face of the mysterious CGP Grey? Found this picture here: ed.ted.com/lessons/the-most-groundbreaking-scientist-you-ve-never-heard-of-addison-anderson
