The language of lying - Noah Zandan

We hear anywhere from 10 to 200 lies a day. And although we’ve spent much of our history coming up with ways to detect these lies by tracking physiological changes in their tellers, these methods have proved unreliable. Is there a more direct approach? Noah Zandan uses some famous examples of lying to illustrate how we might use communications science to analyze the lies themselves.

Excellent video. When we suspect a lie, I suggest we don't call it out directly, but instead call attention to the person's own role/self in the story, and ask for more details to see if they trip up. Assume good intent, but also trust your gut.

The biggest flag I’ve seen when catching a liar, is if you bring something up to the person, and they deny it, and you act like you believe them and let it go, and then they act unnaturally upbeat and kinder than they usually are, that’s a big sign they were lying, and think they got away with the lie, and now they’re being overly nice because a: they’re happy they got away with their lie, and B: they’re still trying to trick you into believing their lie. Example: a cheater is being questioned by their spouse. The cheater isn’t usually over affectionate or romantic, but you accused them of cheating, and they came up with an excuse like “I had to work overtime” or “I was out with my buddies” and the girl is like “you’re right, I’m just over reacting” And then suddenly they’re like “it’s ok babe, I understand, you don’t need to worry, let’s cuddle xoxo” And they’re uncharacteristically being romantic and attentive. It may seem sweet, but in reality, if someone who wasn’t cheating were suddenly accused of it, they’d instinctively get mad or at least irritated. To the younger people here, look out for this ✋🏻

Let me break it up to you: there is no consensus of when a person is lying. You either assume people don’t lie or assume people are always lying. You just never really know a stranger. It may be easier with friends/family because of patterns but even then you can never really be sure. Good book to read about lying is “talking to strangers”

The problem is that when someone tells a difficult truth, or one that seems unlikely, it will sound exactly as if they are lying according to this video. Same. I give as many details as I can to prove that my story is accurate. When I’ve lied, I tried to keep it as short and simple as possible to avoid messing up. I thought everyone knew that. 🤔

I hate it when I’m telling the truth but I’m smiling and laughing. Like I’m just smiling because you think I’m lying 😭

I feel like it just taught me how to lie: from "that laptop wasn't played on last night" to "I did not play on my laptop, I just felt really hot in my mattress and rolled around a lot"

I have this weird reaction that when i told someone a story my body react like i actually experience that story, if i tell them a tragic lie i ended up imagining it actually happen and my heart beat become faster and i actually ended up crying and worse i cant stop it
