I'm building a canopy over the front door of a house supported on curved braced gallows brackets, the roof will be double roman tiles on 3x2 timber rafters, from below the the rafters will be seen but matchboarding will obscure the tiles & battening
I don't make these videos to make money, I make them to share the tips I've learnt over 36yrs as a joiner, but filming, editing, exporting, reviewing & uploading does take a lot of time so if you have gained anything from any of videos & would like to help me out & donate pls click the PayPal link below, every little helps & will be much appreciated. Thankyou.

Appreciate how you don't edit out slight errors, it helps reinforce for us not to do the same. Thanks.

Lovely work and explanations as usual. Thanks for taking the time and effort! I’m 23 years into it now and I either confirm that I’m doing it right or get helpful tips by watching your videos.

Thanks Steven, Yep you learn from watching others 😉 more the merrier, 👍 Remember I'm just using my experience to make decisions, sometimes not always correct or the ones others would make but i try to be honest when I've cocked up n it gives you new tips as you say or confirms that you're doing it like others or that you'd prefer to do it your way, it good to keep an open mind as to how to do something

Screwfix appear to be sponsoring this video again. At least by supplying you with pencils.;-)

😃 I noticed that, the one time my camera decided to focus, I do have a box of these little pencils but it's always tempting when in Screwfix to fill your pocketses . 🙈

Imagine appearing in court with charges of stealing pencils from screw fix. You would never live it down and would probably make national news.

Great vid as per. I dont have space for a big stand up planer. I was wondering if you thought its a good idea to us an electric hand plane, then use your plywood method on the thicknesser to finish it all up? Trying to work out the best way to get squared dimensioned wood without a big metal planer. Thanks again
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 4 года назад
Thanks, There's ways of getting planed square edge (pse) timber, the thicknesser can be used with a board & wedges to get a board planed both sides, squaring the edges is the harder bit, a router table & a straight cutter can be used with a thin sliver of wood on the fence on the outward side, A decent sized plane & a shooting board is prob best, Do i remember you buying a tablesaw? if you have a 40t blade in that it won't need more than a stroke or two with a hand plane to clean the edge up 👍
@ChickenDinnerz
@ChickenDinnerz 4 года назад
@@Gidjoiner thanks, yeah I have table saw and a router table. So I guess I could go router table to get one straight edge, then butt that against table saw fence to get them parallel? Not sure what to do with other two sides after that though haha.
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 4 года назад
I have a piece of ply 8ft long about 1ft wide that i can run through the saw, on it i can mount an 8ft piece of 2x1 & two clamps on the side near the fence, the 2x1 isn't absolutely necessary & doesn't have to be perfectly straight, it's just to raise the clamps up, then clamp the board you want to cut straight to that to get one straight edge, I can't find a vid of mine with it in but in this vid where i'm cutting wedges imagine the board is longer, the little blocks mounted to the board is the 2x1 & the wedge that is being cut is the board you're wanting to get a straight edge on, once you've cut one side then like you say you can run the wood against the fence to parallel it, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YCypl3jMfDo.html

Hi Gid,is ur planer single phase or 3 phase? Keep up the good videos pal👍🏼
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 6 лет назад
I guess it's single phase, it has a 13a plug on it, 😏 the man who sold it to me said it needed a new motor but it's been fine for me, it does need a new drive belt tho. I'll try, thanks Paul. 👍

Hi, Thanks 👍 I use TurboCAD Deluxe 20 2D/3D, I've had this one for quite a while, 10-ish yrs now but I've had other CAD programs in the past & they've worked in a similar way, I only use it for a simple 2D line drawing 👍 all these yrs n i still only know 5% of it 😂 These are a couple of my vids with some of it in, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7NWYO2X5VGM.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kHJsNJfh6sA.html

Hi, sorry i bought it as the CD in a box, i guess there's ways to download but I'd have to search for it 🤷‍♂️🤔😊 I know this link won't help much but this is the exact same box as my CD www.groupon.co.uk/deals/gg-download-buyer-83 but most CAD programs are similar so you'll have to find a site you trust, There's cheaper CAD software, this new version of TurboCAD is on ebay tho www.ebay.co.uk/i/123086624918?chn=ps

Are you using treated timber?
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 2 года назад
No, for these braces i couldn't get treated timber this size & I made so many cuts the treatment wouldn't be much use, also treated timber, here anyways is poor quality wood,, I thoroughly treated with a clear preserver several times & they got painted once on the house.
@Pollys13a
@Pollys13a 6 лет назад
21:33 into video, why are you running the saw back and forwards, dropping as you go, to do the cut?
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 6 лет назад
Same reason i mentioned at 11.38. taking it in one cut is hard on the motor, could produce too much heat in the blade causing burning, heat damage to the blade blunts the teeth or warps the blade, the saw/blade could 'grab' the wood making the saw kick-back, or blade drift would make an inaccurate cut or be dangerous. Small bites of the wood keeps the blade speed up allowing wood chips to clear making the cutting consistent,
