Another band like PT is called The Pineapple Thief. Gavin Harrison is currently their drummer. I would say the first song you should listen to is White Mist. There are surprisingly many bands "like" PT but all very unique too. That is what makes prog. Every band sounds like it's own blend of genres.
I definitely 2nd that....check out pineapple thief....last concert I saw before covid. Gavin is their drummer and the whole band if amazing. Since Porcupine Tree is done for the foreseeable future....this is the next best thing ...."In Exile" live is also spectacular...along with "White Mist"🤘🍻
You have been “Anesthetized”! Congrats! This concert, which is on blu-ray also, is one of my favorite recorded concerts of all time. ANY song from this show is exceptional. Also, the DVD recording of the Chicago show, “Arriving Somewhere But Not Here” is a must listen…..
Alex Lifeson played the original guitar solo on this song , as he was a huge fan of Porcupine Tree, This song was released 16 April 2007 on the Album Fear of a Blank Planet
They aren't separate songs because it all follows the same theme. You first start chill and normal, then you get agitated, and once you're finally anesthetized (the end section of the song) is when everything becomes soothing and you're finally relaxed.
Gavin Harrison is the first drummer I've actively saught out other work hes done. I'm 50 now and heard a lot of good music but something about his style just hooked me.
If you like Porcupine tree, hear a couple of their songs like - Dark Matter, Russia on Ice, Blackest Eyes, .3 , Shesmovedon, Lazarus Then you can move on to Pineapple Thief and you will love them.
Steven Wilson, the vocalist of this band mixed the sound of this live performance and their entire discography including his solo project. For me, he is one of the greatest artist in the current generation.
The drumming in this is absolutely insane, but my favourite part of it (after watching the whole thing about a hundred times) is the drumming between around 22:40 and 23:00
This was recorded in October 2008 in Tilrburg, Netherlands..Its their second live album after Arriving somewhere which was recorded in October 2005 in Chicago.
Epic concert, in my hometown also. Steven Wilson is a genius. In this video you probably saw a pill rotating on a video screen. The album cover of Voyage 34, the complete trip, has that pill on it. A must hear album.
Great reaction to one of the greatest live songs ever except for one glaring exception by the constant pausing and breaking the flow of the song. Porcupine Tree songs are a musical journey but only if listened to in its entirety. PLEASE STOP PAUSING THE SONGS. Comments at the end.Porcupine Tree the greatest band you’ve never heard of. Steven Wilson is a genius.
If you folks want to go exploring a bit off the better known landscapes in metal, there's was a nice little band in Switzerland in the 80's and 90's called Coroner. A nice little tune by them to react to is called 'Serpent Moves', another good one is called "Paralyzed, Mesmerized'.
Please keep reminding me of this! There are so many comments, but I really want to find something off the beaten path and my memory is fucked, lol, I could spend hours just getting lost in music like this.
They would all be great choices for a Rush reunion. This drummer’s name is Gavin Harrison, I think. The band leader and lead singer is Steven Wilson. PT has not been in existence for 10 years .He has his own band, now, called Pineapple Thief
Another band to react to: Soen Soen is ex-Opeth drummer Martin Lopez, and the band sounds slightly Tool-meets-Opeth...maybe more 'listener friendly' (i.e. shorter more concise songs). Plus, Soen seems to like reaction videos, they've posted in the comment sections in a few of them, thanking for the reactions.
We're excited to check out Opeth. I want to get stoned, get lost and tune out to what I have no idea about what's going to happen, sonically. It's coming, man...
With all due respect, NO one can fill in for Neil Peart. Yes, there are many fantastic drummers but RUSH was such a unique phenomenon and each member fed off the other in such a deep, intimate fashion that it would be counter-productive to try and even approach filling that void, even if it's just a "cover band" tour. Neil was in the band 40 years and he was the "new guy" and, being the consummate addition to RUSH with Geddy and Alex's musical contributions, they had a truly unique of the unique niche while they were out there and you will never see it's like again. About the only thing I would like to see is a "one-time" concert with different drummers for a couple songs apiece.........actually that would be awesome and a total nod of respect!
Totally agree grow up with Neal's playing with rush at that time there was no one else that played drums and had a sound like rush one of my die hard favorite band of all time but I take nothing away from Gavin he's great anybody could hear that he is amazing
I'd recommend you guys to check out Sleep Together performed the same night where Gavin Harrison shows his hauntingly groovy chops. People rarely react to that song which I must say, they're missing a gem
Funny you should rush The first guitar solo is performed by Alex liefson of rush lol And the lead singer Steven Willson this is his band and he happens to be a killer sound engineer I notice 916 you folks from the sac area shout to the heights del.paso that is grow up there love this band its porcupine tree music try to react to time flies by these guys nobody else has reacted to the song I sure uall.be surprised good shit check it out
PT Hatesong live from DVD Arriving Somewhere it will blow you away and (try not to pause once You Reach 2 minutes or if you do rewind Please , as you will ruin the flow of there goofing around on this one)
If Rush ever reforms (which I SERIOUSLY doubt would happen) then Carl Palmer is the obvious choice for my money. Has the technical chops and can still bring it at his age. Original prog rocker so it's authentic as well.
Regarding Gavin as a “fill-in” for the great Neil Peart…. I am sure it’s possible, but one thing about Gavin, he was a jazz musician and always improvises on all PT songs. Nothing over-the-top, but always very tasteful and spontaneous. Neil (and the rest of the band) almost always played all their songs in concert note for note, which is what the fans always liked.
Gavin is regarded as one of if not the best drummer by his peers, currently. He’s won major accolades, awards and definitely the best modern day drummers, he’s quite a unique drummer in his own right, he has he own sound, that makes him a great drummer, don’t think suggesting that he would make a fill in drummer for where Neil left off sits well tbh.
If you like the harder sound of PT, Tool, Dream Theater, etc. then you should DEFINITELY check out Riverside. Polish progressive metal with serious melodic voicings and very intense music.
Nice reaction to one of the BEST song ever from PT. Try Arriving somewhere but not here, still live in Tillnurg. You have to react to Steven Wilson solo stuff too, Luminol, Drive home, The raven that refuses to sing, Routine, Regret N°9-Home invasion, Refuge... yes there are bands like this : Riverside for instance.
Studio is better cause its Guthrie Govan on the guitar solo. If there is a good live version with govan itbwould ve great but that solo one of the best solos ever played and its all Guthrie
If you like bands like Tool and Porcupine Tree, you should react to a band called, “Rishloo”. Listen to their song called, “The Dark Charade”. You will thank me later.
As disappointing as it may seem Gavin Harrison i don't think he will do it! 1 He had a fallout with Neil a few years ago maybe 10 12 14 I can't remember! But Gavin taught Neil how to absolutely play Jazz Drums! But yes he could but I don't think he will!!! Thou he could do it and do it well!!! Thats all I'll say Neil is the Bomb !!!
