Never heard this song before. The clean rhythm guitar tone- chorus, maybe an acoustic effect, little phasing. That bass tone, too! Love how this song builds to the climax! A little of everything in this song: Radiohead, Tool, Metallica, then Pink Floyd. Great song writing! I need to listen to more Porcupine Tree!

One of my favorite Steven Wilson quotes is "If you want to be an entertainer, then go be an entertainer and give people what they want. If you want to be an artist, then you have to be true to yourself, and you have to be prepared to confront expectations - and you have to be prepared to disappoint your fans, too." He's always drawn a very clear line between performer/entertainers and artists. He's an artist, which is why you really never know where the journey is going to go. For example, this song which start off ethereal and ends up in a Metallica/Megadeth headbanger and then sets you back down on that groove. His story telling can be very dark (he has some incredible songs/videos like Routine, The Raven That Refused to Sing, Stop Swimming, Heartattack in a Layby), but also has disappointed his fans with releases where the fans had expectations, but he's an artist, so he pleases himself and if you want to go along for the ride, hop in! If not, see you next time.

Definetly a Rush vibe in certain sections of this song. The transitons where it goes into the metal section and then back into the softer sections to me is flawless and thats what makes this song a great song.

To me the metal section is the musical expression of the inner turmoil the person felt of 'how they arrived somewhere'

Mikeal akerfeldt from opeth played the 2nd guitar solo on the album version,here it's played by John Wesley ,the touring guitarist & backing vocalist,it's a beautiful song.

This was during their “metal years” where he was really getting into the heavy stuff. Deadwing still has softer songs that break up the heavy aspect of the album. Overall it’s one of my favorite albums from him. That middle section always shocks people in reactions. I like how you viewed it less from a shock perspective but from a “does it fit”. For me it does but I understand someone might think it’s out of place.

Great band....should have been bigger even considering the success it had.

The beginning reminded me of Pink Floyd's wish you were here album. But then it just turned into a jam session. Deadwing was the first album I bought of theirs and most of it is a jam session; but a good one.

Some explorative stuff there. Loved it. Thanks for the reaction.

I'm a big fan of PT circa the Stupid Dream and Signify albums, where I can safely say that metal bridge section would not have happened.

At first i didn't like the metal part but with time it grown in me to apteciate the raw emotions put on there

Songs ARE made up of parts. Thanks for being honest in not jiving with the metal section. I disagree and love the transition back into the melody/verse section. The long, stretched-out vamps and verses going into the heavier stuff and then back is what I like about PT. Songs like Blackest Eyes (a short one!) start out heavy but have great mellower parts as well.

Hi from Brasil again! There are certain songs/versions that practically "define/summarize" the entire history of a band, or at least I consider the "peak"... this for me is one of them...

I would have tried to make the transitions smoother. They are more fun when they sneak up on you.

Justin, I’m not sure that you are on board with progressive rock???? All decent progressive rock moves through different and contrasting sections which lift you up, take you down spin you round and fold back in on themselves. If you had 11 minutes of the same groove it would be techno trance. The history of progressive rock from Floyd to Yes to King Crimson, to Genesis to ELP to Camel to Supertramp to Marillion to Dream Theater is structured just like this song. Some people don’t have the attention span or the patience to deal with longer tracks others just cannot lock into the idea of ‘progression’ in music through a series of different and contrasting sections but its been around since classical music and I dare say it will still be around when hip hop punk and metal are a distant memory.

I can see what you’re saying, but the metal section did not bother me. It like went from tool, to Metallica, to zeppelin.

So, I love, love, love PT. But I also never was a fan of the instrumental 'wannabe metal' section. Finally here's someone else that understands that being progressive doesn't mean anything goes. That section is definitely weird. Never understood the enthusiasm for this song. It's mediocre within PT'S discography.

I really enjoyed the last 90 seconds but the 10 minutes before wasn't worth the wait. Each track always seems to be a pale imitation of some other well known act in an attempt to appeal to multiple fanbases. It all seems a bit calculated, disingenuous and synthetic to me 🤷‍♂️
@scifimonkey3

The association with other bands is likely you and not them. We all do it! The only true reference PT have made to influence is Pink Floyd but that was more related to their early work and the connection to pre Meddle Floyd. Obviously everyone is influenced a bit by many aspects of what they have heard but PT are not a Copy of anyone and to sound like many diverse sources is to be unique

@Scifimonkey I stand by what I said. He remixes Ultravox and Tears for Fears and suddenly makes The Future Bites? Nah. The association is plain.
@scifimonkey3
@scifimonkey3 Год назад
@@1mbpdf33 that would be his solo work and not PT. Steven had already made reference to trying to create music in a similar vein to TFF on his previous solo album ‘To the Bone’ as part of an attempt to write more commercial material. ‘The Future bites’ was a big step toward electronica but he would hardly be the first artist to change direction in their career. (Personally i was ok with to the bone but find all but a couple of songs on Future bites a difficult listen).You could say the same for Bowie’s excursion into Tin machine which was also a bit derivative and an attempt to be more contemporary but not many people slag him off for his artistic choice or change of direction. Neither Bowie or Wilson have ever in my view pandered to fan bases they produce their art and those that like it buy it and if no one likes it I don’t really think they cared, they both were in positions where financial success was not a concern
@1mbpdf33
@1mbpdf33 Год назад
Funny you mention Bowie because I don't like him either for the exact same reasons. A handful of decent things but on the whole.... more cynical artistry. And let's not pretend that PT and SW solo differ in its leadership.
