I'm really excited to sit in my armchair like the almost 40 year old I am and listen to this in full. Porcupine tree's last album was released the year of my wedding. We've had years of great Wilson music but this is extremely special, I can't wait dude.

You really should, they have a fantastic back catalogue. Their early albums tend to be a bit more psychedelic inspired and coming up through the early 2000s they tend to have a more metal slant. I'd recommend In Absentia, Deadwing, Stupid Dream, FOAB but honeslty they are all pretty good at worst and amazing at best. Except for on the Sunday of Life, we don't talk about that one

A lot of people are saying that this record reminds them of Stupid Dream, which I can get but the metallic influence is definitely there from the likes of In Absentia / Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet too. I personally also really love The Incident though there are some people that aren't as keen on that one. Ah sometimes that's a great way to get into a band though! I kind of did the same with The Mars Volta, I got to see them once at Download Festival in mid afternoon (which ironically was the only time I also saw Porcupine Tree and Dillinger!) then they broke up. Many years later I got into the band and especially when there's nothing happening at that time, it's a great way to really delve into their back catalogue. @@TheMetalTris for sure that has something to do with it, but that record to me is the most mature phase of the band. Songs like Bonnie the cat or The Incident are really something that you dont hear from other bands, and that to me is purely authentic sound. You dont get that "hit" song like Trains or Sound of Muzak, but you get a more distinctive sound, in my opinion. Which is also why I think most people dont appreciate it.
@TheMetalTris
@TheMetalTris 2 года назад
@@letteraguido I totally get that. I think like you say, it's more of a cohesive sound. Those kind of records are always my favourite. Like for example Meshuggah's Catch-Thirty Three. Despite Obzen / Nothing having the great bangers in terms of a front to back album I think that Catch wins out right. Similarly with Opeth and Ghost Reveries, that record is just front to back doused in this slightly spectral atmosphere and I absolutely LOVE it. To me, this album sounds like it could have come from outtakes from Insurgentes and The Raven That Refused To Sing…. I’m not suggesting that it’s not a good album. I do quite like this new PT album. It’s just that it all sounds so familiar and very much the same as previous solo releases by Steven Wilson. I’ve been waiting in anticipation for months for this album to be released. I went out and bought the white vinyl version, the day after it came out. I got seven tracks on the album, across two stunning heavy duty white vinyl discs. However if I’d spent more than twice what I’d spent on this white vinyl version, I could have gotten the deluxe double cd + BluRay version with three extra tracks. Just three extra!? Three? That’s taking the piss. I’d have no problem with this extra cost if it was another CD or vinyl disc with eight, nine or ten extra tracks, like other artists have issued in the past. But, just three? Sorry guys. In this day and age I’ll keep my hard earned money and I’ll spend it on another new album by another artist. Or maybe I’ll just put towards having a nice dinner out with my wife…..

Good review and honestly I'm very happy for you that you got so much out of this album. I am a long time PT fan and they are one of my favourite bands and naturally i love most of Stevens solo stuff too but I'm just not feeling a lot of this album. There are certainly good moments on here that remind me of their best moments. The atmospheric and more melodic moments, the layered SW vocal harmonies, Barbieri seems to benthe star of the show here (ofcourse, we all know Harrison's drumming is top notch) But the heavier and more rock/metal moment's... just boring and unimaginative as far as I'm concerned. A lot of the hooks feel forced and a bit lazy. A lot of those moments feel like ideas that were cut from Deadwing (fantastic album). Happy to have some new PT and I'm sure this will grow on me with more listens. But so far it feels like a lot of reworked b-side material and unfinished songs. My favourites off the album are rats return, dignity, the latter half of Harridan and Chimeras Wreck.
@spiritualarchitect4276
@spiritualarchitect4276 2 года назад
“Even though some of it was written 10 years ago, I don't think of it as old material. None of it was leftovers from The Incident or any other album. It was all created from a brand-new perspective.” - Gavin Harrison “The material we are releasing on this new record goes as far back as 2012, which is when “Chimera’s Wreck” was written. So, there is a sense of continuity from the previous record, The Incident, which was released in 2009. We were writing material within three years of that album for a potential follow-up. There’s one section in “Harridan” where there's literally, within the same line of song vocal, a 10-year gap between the first half of the line and the conclusion of the same line of lyric. That blows my mind, because I can listen to it, and I actually hear the way my voice changed between 2012 and 2021. I don't think anyone else will notice, but I do, because I know where it is. So, it’s very strange for me to acknowledge what a long, extended, drawn-out process it was making the record.” - Steven Wilson
@bentarpey8666
@bentarpey8666 2 года назад
Ok, fair enough some of the ideas here are 10 years old. I do remember reading that Steven said the songs were birthed from ideas that they wanted to work on after the incident. That doesn't negate my opinion nor change it. If this album was released directly after the Incident I think I would still see it as a step backward. My issue with the album isn't that the ideas don't sound new. The emphasis is on the fact that a lot of the ideas to me just aren't very good and sounds like lesser versions of better songs and working on old ideas ten years later is fine but it doesn't sound like much attention was paid to making them great songs. I also remember when Steven said that he did not see a point to ever going back to Porcupine Tree and somewhere around the time of To The Bone or The future bites that he didn't really have anymore interest in guitar focused rock. He's obviously changed his stance on that and it doesn't necessarily mean it has anything to do with the quality of the music.

@@bentarpey8666 Steven admitted he lied about PT getting back together because he wanted people to buy his solo albums. As for this new one, to me it sounds cold and clinical, like it came from the “Nil Recuring” recordings. I have never heard the song “Never Have”, but “Dignity” and “On The New Day” do not do much for me. And I’m not sure what to think about. “Love In The Pass Tense”, except that it is not as good as the critics say. I heard “Walk The Plank” and was not impressed, but on the second listen I liked it better. Still, though, not a great song. That means 5 out of 9 I really like, with one more to hear. I would rate it a middle of the pack album, but still nice to have. I will put the CD in my car and listen to it a lot to get my monies worth out of it. I don't like everything they've done, The Incident in particular is just a horrible mess. I'm so glad that wasn't the first PT album I heard. If it was I would've just passed! In Absentia was and that got me hooked. This one should've come after Fear Of A Blank Planet and would've made an epic final record. Can't fault it. There is sadly not much new material in this album, if anything it feels rushed, nothing really melodic or nice solos, it just feels empty.

This album is not worth it, this is shit, the only one good song is Dignity, I like Harridan, I like On The New Day, but the rest of this album is shit, there is just no emotion in those songs, even herd culling, i dont feel it like it was on incredible level on album Stupid Dream, every note and every song has mood, concept, feelings, its a rollercoaster of sadness and depression, its perfect, and what now? Boring, its boring, even in drops

I doubt anyone will remember Closure/Continuation in a couple of years, it really is nothing special. The box set design is also piss poor for the price.

Can't wait, but really starting to get pissed off with bands alienating their fans with such steep prices for deluxe versions. I would like the extra 3 tracks but the jump in price from the standard cd to the edition with the 3 extra tracks is a slap in the face. Whatever happened to the standard cd, then deluxe digipak version being maybe $5 more?

Blame it on the music industry of today. It is all about streaming now. You can just listen to those 3 extra tracks on streaming.

@@electricwhiterabbit true but I don't use streaming services. I'll get em somehow and add em to my iPod.

@@themetalpig7613 I hear you on the streaming. I'm not a fan of it myself. I prefer to have a physical copy in my hands. Grew up that way. I also like to support the artist.These streaming services don't do jack shit but to rip off the artists. It is a shame really :/

@@electricwhiterabbit I'm exactly the same. Still can't bring myself to follow Joe Rogan over to Spotify because they rip off artists. Lol

Surprise, I bought the deluxe edition and it only comes with two bonus tracks instead of the full 3 lol
