Actually, I think "Half-Light" is the closer on both the extended and the LP versions... I guess SW and the band managed to write two of the best album-closers ever on the same disc... ;)
Arriving Somewhere is objectively one of the most underrated epics in rock history. What a fucking emotional and audible journey!!! Hearing Richard talk about his work on the programming in the intro is so genuine. It’s such an iconic intro to what I would call one of their best songs. Can’t wait for the 2024 Aussie tour 😬🤟
Yep Richard B, is one of the most underated keyboard/sound-scape artists in the UK ,WHO else gets asked to open for Tangereine Dream, then play with them doing the Show.!💯💯💯
So nice to see and hear from Colin Edwin again. As much as I like Closure/ Continuation…. I really miss Colin’s bass and the interplay he had with the band. I saw Porcupine Tree on the In Absentia Tour and I didn’t know their music well at the time…. But one thing that grabbed me was how well the band played different parts so well together. Colin was part of that magic and I hope the band brings him back for another album.
I totally agree. Having seen PT as well at the In Absentia Tour for the first time - it was like magic. Just the whole aura of Colin is missing - he always looked so happy and relaxed playing the songs. Such a great band. Deadwing is my favourite album beside In Absentia. And both albums are in my all time favourite list.
@@andrewkarp5067We are talking about the live performances. Colin was the bass player in concert before the Closure / Continuation tour. I personally enjoyed his stage presence and how he played with the band. Just had this glow about him and I personally miss him.
Yes. I'm like most PT fans a big Steven Wilson fan.....and attribute to him the bigger part of the love for the music......but really, with Maitland leaving something was lost......with Colin leaving something was lost too. Barbieri I always said was the most important element after Steven because his soundscapes represent the best of my favourite PT tracks......and what sets it apart from other metal/rock proggy bands...the way it is done. But yeah, I've adjusted to Gavin being the drummer, even if I actually prefer Maitland's sound.......but I'd really love if Colin eventually comes back.
Agreed! It doesn't get enough attention. The instrumental middle section is just hauntingly beatiful, and the song represents such strengths from every member of the band: interesting rhythm and bass by Gavin and Colin, incredibly atmospheric synth by Richard and all put together by Steven. PT at their very best!
How on earth the band weren't catapulted into the mainstream with this album I will never know! It's an absolute masterpiece, and considering all the metal and prog elements within it, it's probably their most accessible album. Every single person I've ever introduced to this album has loved it!
How I wish the world would have been ready for PT. Listening to the live shows with Steve, Colin, Gavin, Richard, and John never gets old and still gives me goosebumps today. It was such a magical communion of such artful talent. Like some of the 80's classics that did good but really took off decades later. I believe that Porcupine Tree's fan base will only continue to grow. I feel fortunate to be able to attend the Fear of a Blank Planet tour at a very small intimate venue in my home state. Spent the entire show leaning against the House Sound Booth. Hopefully someday we can all get to enjoy a reunion tour for all the Greatest Hits.
I like the fact that Gavin’s groove sparked the songwriting process of “The Start of Something Beautiful” - which means that Gavin’s involvement it is, in fact, the start of something beautiful.🤯 Brilliant, PT - you went meta on this one.
Deadwing's my favourite PT album. I always loved Metal so took to it easily. There's not a weak track on the whole record. In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet was creative peak period. Love all those albums, but I like everything PT have done.
Open Car is the second song i ever heard off of Deadwing after discovering Shallow by accident, it's one of favourites from P.T 's whole discography such a simple song structure and tempo but the sound of everything blending together in the Mix creates this overwhelmingly blissful atmosphere and that Outro is a warm embrace (wish they kept the bridge section from their live shows on the album version) my first album by them that i discovered and still my favorite one
I've given it a lot of thought and for me Deadwing is the best PT album in term of songs and production, and vibe ! FOABP is a masterpiece too, but Deadwing is just that GREAT
With "In Absentia" I was totally hooked to the band. In my humble opinion, they reached the same height of magnificence with "Deadwing" for the second - and last time. Seen them live several times... greatness live.
At about 29:35 Steven says _"So one night we would be playing on a bunch of upturned beer crates in the corner of a bar in Syracuse [New York], ..."_ -- Hey, I was there! The band played an excellent show, but it was a crowded bar and I had the feeling they were kind of depressed about that. It was a *bar,* and at least 20% of the people would have been there even if there hadn't been any band playing. But the audience did seem to enjoy the show. Certainly I did!
They blew the power at our venue in KY on this tour. Their light show was reduced to their manager holding a torch till that got situated 😂. I still remember standing as close to Steve as the distance I am holding my phone now.
This album (Deadwing) was my first introduction to Porcupine Tree. I've been hooked ever since. I am very thankful to hear this band accidentally on AOL radio in 2009.
What a great watch. Can't believe it's been 18 plus years since that album and tour. Saw them quite a few times on the Deadwing tour and they were incredible.
Personally I think _"Deadwing"_ is the strongest album from PTree, although _"Fear of a Blank Planet"_ is a very close second. And I thought it was a classic album within a few weeks of getting the original release. No need to wait 20 years!
I’ve met a few musicians who have had an influence on me, or that I at least admired, and every time I tried to just keep my cool, treat them with respect and keep myself at arms length so I wouldn’t be one of “those” fans. I always said nothing more than, “Thank you for the music.” They seemed to appreciate that more than praising them as gods among men. So, since I doubt I’ll ever meet anyone from Porcupine Tree, thank you Steven, Gavin, Richard and Colin for the music. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Yes Steven I do believe your music will be immortal and not surprisingly crossed generations. I'm 54 now and started listening after hearing Absentia when it came out. First song I ever heard was Blackest Eyes. Around 2015 I was playing Deadwing in our work vehicle and a new guy had just started that day who is about 20 years younger than I. As soon as it started to play his eyes lit up and he looked at me and excitingly yelled, "You know Porcupine Tree"? Come to find out his father who is a Doctor who takes care of the elderly is a huge fan of PT and turned his son onto them. So ya, I think that you definitely have an accessible sound for the masses but in my opinion I think your biggest fans are audiophiles and practicing musicians that can really appreciate the talent on that stage. Myself being a drummer, Gavin of course is a masterclass and seriously lifted PT to another level.
Interesting how, at the end, Steven is able to complement the original sound of PT at the time without saying anything positive about the bass playing--just the hard contemporary edge drumming, the sound design, and the metal riffs
bought the deluxe edition to honor all the creative endeavour these Boys have given to History God Bless John for all the timeless moments he's contributed to the live performances over the years
I just finished watching the In Absentia documentary.. Was hoping there would one day be a documentary about Deadwing. Well, here it is! I can't thank you enough 🙏
This is magnificent. I worked for Atlantic in the late 90’s/early 00’s and began collecting all the PT stuff. The more I discovered the early stuff like voyage 34 etc, the more I realized Deadwing and In absentia are true masterpieces!
I know that most fans consider In Absentia and Fear of a blank planet the best ones, but Deadwing is special in a different way. the songs in it resonate more to me
i really love the initiative. porcupine tree is one of my most favorite band. it makes me very happy and exited to know more about their process and the band. thanks to Lasse Hoile and all the people who are involved with this.
Colin I concur with one of your favorites. There were more times than not when that solo from The Start of something Beautiful would be coming up. I would pull the car over, crank it up and just close my eyes. So tasteful and full of emotion.
I've been obsessed with this album from the second I heard it. A completely original masterpiece. Nothing out there sounds like it. This and "In Absentia" are easily my favorite albums of all time. I learnt to play nearly all the songs on there on guitar.
When I was first getting into Porcupine Tree after the release of Fear of a Blank Planet, I found that the songs on Deadwing seemed like some of the most magical. I literally downloaded their entire back catalogue and would listen on my commute or cig break, or wander through the local woods listening to it on shuffle, as a way to familiarise myself with the breadth of their work, quickly. That is not the way I would usually appreciate music, and in hindsight, it seems quite disrespectful to a band that is very much at home within the album format but I came to value those albums very dearly anyway. The flow of the Deadwing album itself is really incredible, starting with the high energy tracks and more accessible songs, and becoming more chilled and blissful after the centrepiece, Arriving Somewhere. It really does remind me of the feeling I get after I watch a film that resonates with me.
Deadwing was my entry point to the world of Steven Wilson and PT. It is still my favorite thing the band did. Thanks to my friend Eric who opened the door in 2007!
Couldn't help but fall in love ❤️ with everything you created coz of the pure skill... even when I discerned the crazy irony of the lyrics...😂 😮❤loved your passion, anger, sense of raw nonconformist, telling it like it is...!!! My soul was dying😢 coz of the music scene...(And coz of my own personal tragic dark night of the soul)..THEN.. walked into HMV who were playing the new release...Hand Cannot Erase..and woo hooo..I SWEAR..🎉😮🎉❤😅🎉 literally came back to LIFE... just worship God for y'all...He does work his miracles in many ways and many beautiful and inspiring walks of life..(not just music)!!! THANK YOU ❤️ for ALL your hard work and dedication to your craft..!!! Never heard such versatile and varied styles that can be pure therapy for every kind of mood I had at the time... including DEADWING..!!! Loved how you (at the time) didn't care about ME!!! It was hilarious, magical, And liberating for me...shame about Tim hey..!??
Easily one of my favourite albums across genres, or all times. Arriving Somewhere is as genius as it's emotional, and daringly original. Was great to see the little stories behind the songs. Wish Steven had acknowledged Colin at least once, don't think he did throughout the documentary :') but well, that be life, I guess!
For me it's very surprsing that they are talking about that there was so small amount of people on shows in America. In Poland every time when i was on show - buildings were bursting at the seams. From present perspective it's kinda suck that mastermind like Steven had struggle to earn good money.
Wow! I watched the In Absentia Documentary on this same channel, and now Deadwing, are they releasing a Fear of a blank planet one? With that they will encompass the TRILOGY OF THEIR BEST THREE ABUMS.
I'm surprised by their own perception of Deadwing. I feel like it has aged the best out of all their albums and seems to be their most popular album on Spotify.
I absolutely love "Revenant," and it should have been on Deadwing in my opinion. It's got this moody, spooky, creepy vibe to it that invokes Eric Draven and other revenants.
This record is very close to being a masterpiece except that I think that "So Called Friend" should have replaced "Halo" (which to me is one of their weaker efforts). Not only is it a much stronger song but a segue from "Lazarus" and into "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" would have been much more striking.
They made a documentary for In Absentia a few years ago, and this year Deadwing, so I think they will in a couple of years for FOABP and hopefully for The Incident
@@andrewkarp5067 Oh, thanks. My eyes deceived me then. Must watch again. Sorry about the late acknowledgement. I only just got notifications for replies from YT going back several months, hence the delay).
