When I analysed many of my favorite Porcupine Tree songs over several albums, I found out a clear pattern.
One chord is always being used to write all of their major songs. One single chord.
That chord is... a simple Open D Major chord.
Steven Wilson uses variations on this chord on so many songs, it's impossible to name them all.
In this video, I explore all the variations he made on this chord to write multiple Porcupine Tree songs.
Songs I covered:
- Even less
- Pure Narcotic
- Baby Dream In Cellophane
- Four Chords That Made A Million
- Blackest Eyes
- Sound of Muzak
- Trains
- Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
- Mellotron Scratch
- Fear Of A Blank Planet
- Occam's Razor
- Time Flies
... and of course there are so many more, but I couldn't cover ALL of them!
I hope it's going to inspire you, because they were able to write dozens amazing songs with all the same sets of musical resources!
Enjoy!

What a surprise! Big Porucpine Tree fan here! Fear of a Blank Planet is my fav album. You just ruined the whole Steven Wilson songwriting magic for me there. Joking, you didn't. I've never commented on your videos but really loving the content here and your dreamy guitar playing style.

Nice run down on Steve’s variant of the D chord. But how could you miss talking about the equally important A#6/9 A#maj6add9 chord that is in so many of the chord progressions of songs off Stupid Dream and In Absentia. It is that je ne sais quois chord that mixed in w Dsus2, Cadd9 and G/B chords that creates that so identifiable Steve Wilson sound. 1st fret on A, B and hi E strings w open D and G. You can slide down from the Cadd9 with sane fingers on same string (just take off maj3 of Cadd9). These chords are found in Arriving Somewhere, Even Less, Pure Narcotic, Sound of Muzak and others.

Yup... he uses it all the time and I have only found it in SW songs. I prefer to call it a B♭6(9) and I refer to it as "the Steven Wilson chord". It mixes well with Em7 as well, as in Pure Narcotic. I figures prominently in the Buying New Soul chorus: B♭6(9) - Cadd9 - Dsus2 - F/C (or Dm9 for Wes), and in the Harmony Korine chorus: Dsus2 - B♭6(9) - Cadd9 - E♭add9 (X-6-5-0-6-6)

Antoine, a thousand thanks for the great video, it's crazy, I have P.T. only recently discovered for me, and I am very enthusiastic about Steven Wilson, especially Raider 2 blew me away, even if the Lizard from KC Inspiration was here. Porcupine Tree was a great band, I’ll see if I can use the video as a base to work out more of their music. But I have one question: a pinky on the 3rd fret adds a fourth, but at the 4th it’s b11? How?
@AntoineMichaudGuitar
@AntoineMichaudGuitar 4 года назад
It's actually a #11, but yes. We're just talking semantics of music theory, but basically, a 4th is the same thing as a 11th. When we're talking chords extensions we always use odd numbers, that's why I mentionned ''#11''. But when we're talking about suspended chords, we say ''sus4'' instead of ''sus11''. Spelling chords the right way is very confusing sometimes.

I was asking for videos for short sausage fingered people on another video... This video covers a lot of chords that are playable by us unfortunate guitar players. I notice, the left hand stuff is fairly easy, with easy single finger modulations that are pretty usually reachable, but the strength of the playing is in the right hand, you've got to be a fast and accurate picker, with up and down strokes AND string skipping. That's not so easy to do without a lot of practice, for me at least. I ALWAYS lose my place, my index, like my right hand will move a tiny bit, just a centimeter or even just a few mm, and then I'm off by a string or two when I go to pic the next string! Do you have any right hand picking exercise videos? I'd love to commit some time to quickly improving my right hand, would help in so many lagging areas of my guitar playing. Thanks man, all of your videos are great, you give great insight, and you don't just steamroll us beginners with data/technique/concepts. Really appreciate it. Thinking you're my fav youtube guitar teacher. Found you a while ago, but with a different account, I think, and life intervened, but I've found you again. Love what you have to teach. THX!

Thanks for watching my videos! As I have almost 700 videos, with new comments every day on my channel, I won't be able to read very long comments like you left on my last video. I'm sure it's very interesting stuff, but I can't make it a full time job if I read it all. I prioritize short and concise comments that I can answer fast. Hope you understand! As for the sausage finger question, I think you would be much better served with a teacher who actually HAS sausage fingers and can explain how he can work around it and show you techniques to compensate. That wouldn't be very genuine if I touched on this matter with my long spider fingers, since I never had to overcome this issue. Cheers! P.S: here's another lesson I made with simple chords: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ReF9qNSiKFc.html
