An interesting choice for a PT song. Definitely one for the more dedicated PT fans and I really enjoyed listening to your perspective. Fingers crossed one day you might have a listen to 'start of something beautiful' or more predictably, but deservedly 'sound of muzak'.

I only found the PT rabbit hole about 7 years ago, and looked at all my musician friends and went "What is this? Why hasn't anyone told me about this?" And I'm still in freefall down the rabbit hole, so many projects he runs, and when I wander around the house doing chores, any one of his albums/projects is on RU-vid filling the house! Thank you, love your insights and explanations of many genres of music

Technically speaking he recorded his contributions to the first Blackfield album (the only one he played on - on the tracks Blackfield, Hole In Me and Hello) back in 2000/1, before he left PT. He did join the initial live line-up for BF but only played a few TV performances with them in early 2004. He did, however, contribute to both the album and EP that Richard Barbieri made with Steve Hogarth about 10 years ago.

I think the end section of this track was Chris Maitland's finest moment with the band. Colin Edwin was great on this one too. Love those harmonics! I think this is my favorite Porcupine Tree album. omg I'm so glad this song got a listen to. It's one of the songs where going on a journey really feels like you are going on a journey and it's really leading you somewhere dark. Because of that kind of slowish start, I didn't think I could get pulled into the song but it really really pulls you in and then that ending just makes that build up so worth it. It's enjoyable from start to finish. Like some slow starts can drag and feel like they're milking every moment but this feels like you're stuck on a snowy mountain lost and this is the only sound you can hear that helps you keep your sanity. Other future porcupine tree songs I'd suggest which others might have already suggested- hatesong, gravity eyelids, start of something beautiful, drown with me, wet ribbon, sleep together, blind house, signify among many more. I suggest these more than other good tracks because you'd get something new from it. Whether you react to it or just listen to it in your own time doesn't matter.

Love to hear these older PT songs being given an airing with a fresh point of view. It also puts a new coat of paint on it for those of us who knew these songs. I'd love to see a reaction to some of the less seen songs as I'm sure many PT fans would agree with. Songs like 'Heartattack In a Layby', 'I Drive the Hearse', 'Dark Matter', 'Waiting (phase 1 & 2) and 'Stop Swimming' are really emotional journeys for me every time I listen to them and that feeling has only become stronger with time. I think the thing that makes Steven's music incredible is how he can completely demand your emotional investment and then with respect for the listener gently pulls on that emotional thread in different ways. 'Heartattack In A Layby' is more of a yank on the thread though. Makes me cry most listens and I love it for that.

I've never heard this track before and was really pulled along with the journey. The patience and payoff was delightful and I was thrilled with the melodic modulation and changes in the middle. Strings and guitar section are beautifully composed. When writing music, we often discuss track length, and yet this epitomises the benefit of developing themes and remaining on the hook. Does anyone think the track is 'too' long, or wish for anything different? I don't, but wonder if others would? I suppose the harmonies at 6 minutes are similar to comfortably numb in their payoff, not to draw other parallels. I also hear similarities to a Blur track in the vocals at 10m when you press play again. The string arrangements are so brilliant! Was the 'ping' sound (just b4 18m) to represent a submarine radar? Omg those argeggiated strings into 12m, you clearly felt the same. Eargasm :) 14m, I can almost hear 'the edge' singing 'numb' over this. Only for a second though, then I'm bobbing my head along. Scrap that, Trent Reznor is a great shout. Such an etherial/ spiritual ending.

Porcupine Tree is one of those bands you don't just listen to but EXPERIENCE and FEEL! To me every track is a journey and every album a story. I am looking forward to their new record!!! (June 2022) Geebz, what I dig about your videos is the natural reactions you show when you are listening/absorbing to what your ears pick up and your heart feels. Besides the professional and interesting feedback you throw out there above said is what makes me come circling back to your channel. About Wilson: you should check out the band BLACKFIELD (Collab between Wilson and Aviv Geffen), the first two albums (BLACKFIELD 1 and BLACKFIELD 2) are fantastic! Plus, he created an interesting, dark album with Mikael Akerfeldt (OPETH) under the name STORM CORROSION! a few trivia bits... the second half of the song is credited to all 4 band members (first half, only Wilson), so likely it grew out of a jam, perhaps based on a riff by bassist Colin Edwin. And speaking of Colin - the mystery instrument you heard is a guimbri, played by him. String sections were arranged and produced by Dave Gregory (former XTC guitarist), who also arranged strings on PT's next album ("In Absentia"). Richard Barbieri (ex-Japan) did all the keys and synths (though SW is credited for samples). And as another commenter noted, drummer (and backing vocalist) here was Chris Maitland; this was his last PT album.

Related to this, i believe Storm Corrosion would be something so... different for you to hear, yet familiar. A (so far) one-time project from Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) and Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth). My personal favourite is Ljudet Innan but you could go with Drag Ropes as a more busy dive into that album.

I love blasting this song on my home system. That sub bass is deep.

@@kevinbossick8374 yep, it's a window-rattler, particularly in the 5.1 mix. My apologies to my downstairs neighbor. ;)

Being in my 50s brings me back, nostalgic. This song has a PINK FLOYD, YES BAND feel to me. (meshed with a few rock eras) Love the harmonies🙂

Old school PT! Much different feel compared to the material after Gavin joined the band, but I love both eras equally, for different reasons. Great choice, but I am also really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the new PT song, Harridan!

This is definitely more similar to newer PT than it is to the true old school PT such as The Sky Moves Sideways

This and Trains are my favorite PT songs. You should do Heart Attack in a layby or shesmovedon next.

Hi Geebz. You have really created a PT addict here. However, going in reverse chronological order I consider the 'Gavin Harrison - Drummer' albums the best.

17:32 that hook comes for me from a very specific place... WWE/WWF wrestling Stone Cold steve austin theme... monday night raw is was... attitude era... damn! is almost the same note by note In that riff. perhaps I open myself to much on that reference BUT... i got to get it out of my chest ... I did recall it every time I get this song on my ears and no one to tell about it ... hehe.

Reminds me of some of Pink Floyd songs with that opening. I could get into this on a cold, rainy PNW day.

I definitely hear some Division Bell vibes. Some David Gilmore 1978 solo album vibes. Among others.

This song got me into Porcupine Tree and I still love it. PT was a band, not just Steven Wilson. I always look for a live version of the song, I’m curious how a band performs such a complicated song live. And here we are: I absolutely love the delicate soundscapes by Barbieri, the incredible Chris Maitland on drums and beautiful background vocals at the same time. And of course Colin such a fine bassist, great vocals and guitar by SW. And although he might have written the song, without the band members it wouldn’t have the kind of energy I love to feel. For me that’s what makes my face melt. Watch it live: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZGRqQP0l1mo.html
