So this just happened.... This song has made it into the Dutch Top2000 songs of all time as voted by music enthusiasts! Coming in at number 1478. Not Lazarus, not Trains, not Blackest Eyes but this one. Congratulations Steven Wilson!

Seeing Porcupine Tree live was one of the best concert experiences I've ever had.

One of PT's most striking features is how Richard Barbieri handles his keyboard parts. He doesn't try to emulate an orchestra, he doesn't try to compete with guitars for prominence, he doesn't do solos. He contributes mood and texture, and that makes their signature sound as much as Steven's writing

Porcupine Tree's In Absentia album is in large part a reason that I am still alive to write this. I was in the process of being fired from my ideal job as an act of revenge, seriously considering making my family's life easier by taking my pain out of their existence. PT kept me from that, ironically with "Heart Attack In a Lay by". Thank you, Steven.

This song is specified in my will as the track that will be played when my ashes are scattered, along with 'What happens now?' It was great to meet the band on this tour in Seattle before my illness left me bedridden. I am grateful for humans like PT fans.

Back in the 70s I got to see Yes, Zep, Floyd, KC ect..But seeing Porcupine Tree last year at Radio City Music Hall was one of the greatest concerts I've ever experienced.

fond memory: seeing PT at Radio City Music Hall in Sept. 2010 -- their next-to-last live show before their 13-year hiatus began -- and this was the final song. Due to the venue's rules, they HAD to wrap the show by 11pm -- so they ended the show proper around 10:45 and left the stage; when they returned for the encore, Wilson explained that due to the house rules, they only had time for one last song (lots of "noooo!" from the audience)... then added "but it's a fucking long one." :)

My only disappointment with the reformation of the Tree is Colin Edwin's absence..

I was at this show! We're coming up on 20 years since it happened now so I don't remember many specifics, but the show was absolutely magical, and I'm glad to have a video record of it.

On the album recording, the solo at the end of the bridge section before the last verse (where you remarked that PTree don't mind taking their time) was played by Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth.

Richard Barbieri is a master of sound design. His soundscapes are a big part of the PT sound.

Porcupine made me believe in music again. Gavin Harrison is actually everything people claim Portnoy is and isn't. Just a remarkable, unique player who deserves all is the credit he is not given.

I was also fortunate to see Porcupine Tree live. The Incident tour and co-headlining with Coheed & Cambria. I was really impressed by the amazing sound quality of the live experience. Not surprised though given Steven's production chops. Every note frome every instrument was crystal clear.

I was at this concert.. First Porcupine Tree concert, and had to follow them and see them a second time 300 mi away.. wow Dream Theater + Porcupine Tree + Spock's Beard are my top 'triumvirat' bands.

First time on this channel and, by golly, playing one of my favorite songs. IMO, Porcupine Tree is the second coming of some of the greatest prog-rock bands, particularly Pink Floyd. Couldn't help but subscribe as soon as the pipe came out 🙂

one of thoes distinct albums i remember very clearly listening for the first time. I sat down on the steps of union square after purchasing the cd at virgin records and just being baffled listening to this song. i couldn't get over how beautiful it was, still can't.

I can only agree with the Idea of an album reaction to Deadwing. It is a powerhouse of an album with no fillers. Would highly recommend it for an Extended Play Lounge. Cheers Doug.

It really doesn’t matter what Steven puts out, whether PT or his solo work, all stellar. This, if you listen is another example of Steven’s love of Pink Floyd.

One of my very favourite bands and one of my favourite songs. Many of my most listened tracks on Spotify are PT, saw them live in November last year in London and again at the end of their tour in Germany in August this year.

The first video of yours that I watched was your reaction to Dream Theater "The Count of Tuscany" and I absolutely loved how you were calling out the chord changes as they happened. You sprinkled a bit of music theory jargon in there and I loved it! I immediately clicked subscribe. I've been watching your content ever since. Keep doing what you're doing Doug! In my opinion, you're a real gem for us music enthusiasts.

PT has some great songs! The whole Deadwing album is tremendous! It was the first PT album I ever bought. Of course, Gavin Harrison also plays in King Crimson....

This is funny. Thanks to promotions, ASBNH is in the Top 2000 of all time in the Netherlands for the first time. The song comes in new at 1487. The Top 2000 is created by the listener through votes, and is a Dutch tradition. All 2000 songs will be broadcast between Christmas and New Year ❤

This song just entered the famous Dutch Top 2000 for the first time at #1478. I couldnt believe that they finally managed to get on there, as they really should've been there for much longer.

Not just a great rock song, but one of the greatest rock songs ever written! Such great musicians.

I can help with how the keyboard plays multiple notes when just one key is held down. It's called a step sequencer. There's tons of versions, but in general, you set the number of notes, or steps, you want in the sequence, then you assign the number of semitones above or below the note you are holding down that each step will sound out. For example, you could set up a 3-step sequence of 0, 2, -2. Meaning if you hold down C, the sequence will play C, D, A#. Then you set the speed and feel, (straight, swing, etc.). Now hold down D and you'll hear D, E, C at the same speed and feel. The highest number of steps any of my synths will produce is 32. One of the earlier examples of this is The Who's "Baba O'Riley". It's sort of a precursor to the modern step sequencer. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work, Doug!

I was fortunate to hear this song live, not by PT, but on Steven's solo tour I think in 2018 (To the Bone tour). I'll never forget the goosebumps all over my body when I heard the intro.

Was surprised that you had not done this one. With Anesthetise it is probably the zenith of their pre2009 work. It would be good to see your take on some of the tracks from the latest album.

Hello from Brasil! This song in this live version is simply the Porcupine Tree song I enjoy most! I highly recommend watching this entire show! All the music is excellent! And as a total counterpoint to this "psychedelic" song, I recommend the song "Mother and Child Divided" (completely instrumental) from this show. And the drummer, Gavin Harrison (who is or was a member of King Krimson): he would be my choice to accompany a possible reunion of Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee!

15:57 Excluding Colin Edwin by calling Wilson/Barbieri/Harrision "the core trio"... well, it seems the band's "let's not mention Colin ever again" campaign is working. Edwin was part of the core QUARTET, and he & Barbieri joined the project simultaneously in the mid-90s, which was even before Harrison's predecessor Maitland got on board. Edwin got many a writing credit. Doug, if you know PT, you just cannot say you never heard this masterpiece of them. And is not just the music, the lyrics are hauntingly brilliant as well.

It's funny, but back in 2000, there were raging debated in the "prog community" as to whether Porcupine Tree was "prog". I would champion them and have to face the slings and arrows of the traditionalists who scoffed. It was especially gratifying to see PTree headline NEARFest 2001 after having endless debates with the organizers over the bands prog credentials. Actually, as PTree evolved into a more "heavy" sonic canvas, they drifted away from my personal sweet spot, but the band and all of Steven Wilson's spin-offs are special to me. Hopefully, Doug will visit Blackfield one of these days to experience Mr. Wilson in a more succinct, commercial format. "Arriving Somewhere" definitely resonates with the "Stupid Dream" / "LIghtbulb Sun" era PTree and as such, has always been on my fav list.

Still gutted that I’ve not gotten to see them live. Had hoped for the chance during the C/C Tour most recently but they didn’t get close enough to me. Now I can only hope and pray that they decide to go around again in the future. We’ll never know until they actually do it.

Quick side-quest Suggestion: John Wesley is the guitar player that joined the band for live performances.. he has some great songs. "By the light of a sun" is one of my favourites by him!!

Hi i think Doug this pad sounds that you are hearing in 5:00 are probably made with a wavetable synthesizer capaple of waveshaping or something like that. I also think he use a reverb that can modulate the pitch tail. like some shimmering reverb. Hard to tell just by ear, you can achive this in a different ways.

The version of Lazarus from this show was my wedding song...i knew i had a keeper when she agreed.

PT live were always at their best with Colin Edwin and John Wesley on stage.

Deadwing is my personal favorite of PT. I love its heavyness. Only weak point is the closer. If it just was as good as In Absentia's it would be the perfect album.

I saw PT once over a decade ago with King's X opening. The band's equipment was late in arriving from the airport so they were delayed by a couple hours, on what was already a rather late set, and I had been up since early in the morning. I was just so exhausted that I didn't get to enjoy the show, and they didn't get a proper sound check. I hope I can makenup for it one day

Although they didn't play this the last time I saw PT in London - the concert was still amazing - here's to the next one?, hopefully they will be? meanwhile, every time I watch this video it just reaffirms my belief that its one of the greatest Prog Rock songs of all time period! For me, up there with the greats Sgt Pepper, All Around the Watchtower, Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, SOS - yes ABBA, Firth of Forth, Don't believe a word (Gary Moore OGT - broken string - I know some are not prog - but you know what I mean!) amongst others!!

Outside of the comfort zone of many people (and to some extent, once, I was one of those) lies a band I can recommend based on the fact that Steven Wilson loves it. (He made a beautiful cover of a song of theirs called Stoneage Dinosaurs, for instance, in a fund raiser album friends of the leader of the band had to raise money for medical treatment). On the assumption that having some strings (a bit less than half strings, let's say) will bring the song back into some comfort zones, after the bears on bicycles have left the arena - but not too much, since part of the idea is to escape from the comfort zone and into danger, here, I think? ... er ... that's why long sentences are verboten - you get old, you start to forget where you started ... ah, a song with some relief from whatever discomfort it contains from a band that has the love of Steven Wilson: *The Breakfast Line* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3pAanYJvsCo.html (And the band is *Cardiacs* - now gone and lost forever, sadly.)

Interesting to hear John's take on the solo here, you can hear his style seep into the "as-written" solo in places. If you haven't check out his solo album Disconnect, well worth a listen.

Would you react/analyse Steven Wilson's Personal Shopper some time? That'd give you something to talk about lyricswise too for sure. And then there's the "world's best guitar solo", Wilson's Home Invasion/Regret #9. The only weird part about the C/C (the latest album) was how Wilson didn't contact Edwin to play on it. He was there for the whole journey.

Great band, great song, but the greatest for me is "sound of muzak". That is the school book of drum sound control, give it a shot, you'll not regret. By the way, thank you for your great content, I am a composer too and I can say you give the best quality content in this niche, keep killing it!
