Williams is played by the late great Philip Madoc, a familiar face on British TV in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Wainwright is played by Peter Jeffrey, who usually played very well-spoken (and often villainous) characters.

I remember Philip Madoc in Dads Army as the German U boat commander , if you haven’t seen that episode I highly recommend it

Fulton Mackay (Mr Mackay) is one of my favourite actors, he also appears in one of my favourite films "local hero" which is a beautifully written gentle comedy, well worth a look.

I love the little debates that Mackay and Fletcher have, they're normally quite cordial

Without doubt one of my favourite episodes of the entire show. So many brilliant moments, particularly McKay shouting down Fletcher and then taking the bet anyway.

"Norman Stanley Fletcher, you have pleaded guilty to the charges brought by this court, and it is now my duty to pass sentence. You are an habitual criminal, who accepts arrest as an occupational hazard, and presumably accepts imprisonment in the same casual manner. We therefore feel constrained to commit you to the maximum term allowed for these offences: you will go to prison for five years."

The fact they where all secretly glad to have MacKay back rather than the bully Wainwright was quite touching at the end with their singing.

Great video . I used to watch porridge as a kid but never did it dawn on me that Mr Mackay was also the lighthouse keeper in Fraggle Rock. (Not sure if dif there in the US) . Kate beckinsale is also Richard Beckinsales daughter (lenny) u learn everyday they say.

You missed out the best bit...when Barraclough goes in to quell the riot!...It's brilliant...He's really tentative and nervous but all the prisoners obey him without question

It's interesting seeing somebody worse than McKay replace him in this episode. I like how the inmates are are actually happy that McKay returned at the end.

There's a 1960 film starring Peter Sellers called Two Way Stretch and it's clearly the basis for Porridge and certainly the character of Napper Wainwright is 100% based on the character of Grout played by Lionel Jeffries in that film... Worth checking out if you can get hold of a copy. It's not shown on TV because of shall we say a lot of "Politically incorrect" views as they would say today.

Mr McKay didn't have to act in this show as he was Mr McKay in real life.
