Can't afford a 2.7 Carrera RS? Well it's time to reveal a factory 911 which shares the same engine, gearbox and chassis as that famous Rennsport and is just as rare, but costs half as much…
I'm a 59yo Aussie and my dad had one in like a lime green in 1977. What a car to get dropped of at your highscool in. Before that all he had was xy, xa, and xb Gt falcons.
My dad had one of only 234 74 Carrera Targa 2.7’s in the US back in the day. I’m aware that the US market didn’t have the MFI, but it was still a rare, quick, and unique car with the duck tail, wide fenders and enhanced interior and handling. I was only 10 when he bought it (you can do the math) but was fortunate that he kept it as his daily driver well beyond my 16th birthday when I got my license. I think I was around 18 when he finally trusted me with the keys....which was a good thing he waited. Even still, I remember taking a corner a bit fast the first time I was alone and nearly lost the back end as I exited. My Opel GT didn’t have quite the gusto. :) Sadly, the car came to a tragic end around 1989. Someone stole it off a parking lot in broad daylight only to be found a few months later pretty much completely scrapped out. What a shame. Great memories though.
As always Lee, great review your passion for these great cars comes across really well during your reviews. Separate point but took my 991 GTS to CAT Driver training on Monday at Millbrook, fantastic day love these cars so much.
Thanks for the kind words, Gareth. I'm enjoying doing these YT videos and learning a lot along the way so it's positive news all round! CAT day in the 991 GTS sounds fun, that's a good investment into your 911 experience.
Hi, I had one of these in 1985. What you don’t point out is it’s pre-galvanisation of the body shell, so they do rust. My 1975 version was showing rust on the inside door pillar by 1985. Thanks for the insightful video.
I'm glad you picked up on the sticker! Allegedly it's been on there since it left the factory. Although I've not seen that particular sticker before it is in keeping with other 'Porsche-like' instructions I've seen on 911s of the period (including an interior decal instructing how to change gears… in an IROC racer!). Will post some better pictures of the sticker up on my Instagram in the coming days.
1974 US CSI came with the 73 duck tail and the 74 steering wheel was different than the 74 on. Several thousand Carrera MFI compared to around 250 CSI versions for the US market. I have the pleasure of owning mine twice. For three years 85 to 88 and again now since 2019. Still less than 20K on the odometer. The original engine fitted with RSR spec engine since 1975 wearing twin plugged Webber 46 IDA3C carbs. It’s a rocket wearing it’s Gulf blue paint and original full leather interior I hope to drive it to death, literally.
The Carrera 3.0 is essentially a Turbo without the Turbocharger, it shares little with the 2.7RS and even has less power than it and the 2.7 Carrera before it. Sorry.
@@9WERKSTV Ok faire enough, I shouldn't have called it an RS:-) But is it the last true Carrera... Little bit less power indeed, but as fast as the Carrera 2.7. Same thinking in development by Porsche, 'high' revving engine and carrera body. Can we compromise?;-)
