My Porsche 356 has been apart for too long. Now I'm looking for the roughly 10,000 pieces it needs to be reassembled into a complete car. Wish me luck!
I've owned this car since 1998 and plan to keep it forever. This is not a build and flip car, so I'm restoring every bit when I find the time.
Quick Glo is amazing for driver quality chrome and preservation:

Anyone walking in will think the backend is now complete, ready to go! Looks great, I'd stick with the original plate either as is or bit of polish, depends if you can get a official remade plate or that's now obsolete but as you say it's been with the car My VW Corrado is getting the same 90s numberplates someone made up here in the UK that later got banned as they have been on years and still comply due to age of it!

Thanks, I'm happy looking at a bit more complete. A buddy had a VW corrado in high school and I always thought it was cool. Funny story about them changing their minds on the plates. Weird!

A little polish and a new shiny frame will make the license plate look great.

Thanks, the yellow is worn thin in a few spots and the blue has some damage as well. I'll do like you suggest and see how long I can live with it! As long as I'm having fun who cares what the plate looks like!

Good to see you back on the 356. Keep the plate as is maybe polish it with a mild cleaner wax, restore or replace the frame. Nerd alert! That plate was issued around 1976. The alpha characters indicate the issue time. Blue plates began in late 1969 with a 111 AAA format. End of nerd out. I enjoy the videos keep them coming.
@GarageTimeAutoResto

Great info for a nerd like me. I googled how the plates were issued and came up empty. I'm sure this car got its rust while touring Italy and not California. So 12 years in Italy explains it! Thx

You should consider the solid aluminum GT trim for the bumper.

Funny. I was considering a GT like trim for my 911. I'm always thinking backwards.

Maybe look for a Vasek frame... I'm guessing you have one though, I love patina... but it just doesn't work... Go for the resto on the plate. Still have the original plate for my 71 javelin but I'm in ut now, so it's a no go.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 2 года назад
Ha, I don't have a Vasek frame! Would love to get one. I'm curious what the first number of your plate is in 71. I'm trying to nail down the year this plate was issued.

it is satisfying to be going back the other way (putting parts back on the car), feels like progress.

Agree. I wanted to get more parts on, but I ended up cleaning and restoring stuff along the way. I had boxes of stuff strewn all over the garage floor like Christmas!

Great start Tom! I’m in the same boat on my 65 now. On the plate I’d try polishing it out lightly and getting a nice vintage frame to match. Kinda like the higher end of the spectrum of chrome bits so the car looks better than driver but not completely brand new to keep that well aged look
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 2 года назад
Cool, I'll try to keep some of the wear on the plates. Sections of the yellow lettering is very thin. Chrome is tough to balance for a vintage look. Most of my chrome is just too far gone.
@rsrguy
@rsrguy 2 года назад
Slightly amusing when you stop and consider porsche likely chipped paint in this operation during original construction.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 2 года назад
I'm sure. They probably had the heavy bumperettes pre installed too. I'll have to watch made by hand again to see how they did it at production speed. At my speed I'd be fired.

Were the license plate lights more closely spaced on the US spec cars? Yours look like they would light up a wider Euro tag.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 2 года назад
Great question. This car had holes in the body in a larger square pattern. Apparently the shape of the plate was similar to UK plates then. Squarish. I assume Germany designed the light spacing for their longer plates and thought it would be good enough for US too. I'm not aware of a different spacing, but I have another bumper I can measure for fun.

I wish my car had a vintage plate. Definitely a keeper for me. Enjoy the process! Minor details can wait for sure. 👌🏻
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 2 года назад
California brought back the black and yellow plates, but not the blue ones, so these are a bit more rare today. If my car was sold in California when it was new it should have black and yellow plates.

@@GarageTimeAutoResto I didn’t know they reissued the antique plates. The Black one would have fit better with the irish green but originality is what makes your car unique. It’s not possible in my province unfortunately to get a reissued antique plate. 1968 Québec Plates would have fit so well on mine.
