Welcome to my Porsche 356 Restoration Project Car. This car had MAJOR Rust damage requiring loads of cutting and welding!
The hardest part is over now!
I've been working on it off and on while navigating life things, such as work, kids, etc.
This project taught me so much about metal working and welding. More than I thought I was going to learn, but I'm glad I did it. The hardest part is over now. I can't wait to finally drive it again soon!

I retract every criticism about modification of the 911. This is masterful. Please show more about this car.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 4 года назад
This car is very pure with numbers matching everything, doors, decklid, trans, engine, etc. I got the 911 to be creative and modify so I don't modify the 356! As soon as I get the doors put back on the 911 I'm going to start working on the 356 again too.

Wow, what a job I bought mine after that had been done. It has never been in the rain since! Roller bearing! who would do such a thing! They took 4 cam engines out of these things because of that.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto Год назад
The roller bearings are great but they need to be greased often. Technically you can't drive across the country without stopping to grease the king pin and torsion arm bearings! Grease pushes water too.

My ‘64 SC had a roller bearing crank. I had no trouble with it but I must admit that I was always nervous about it. But then owners of plain bearing cars were nervous about their cranks breaking. VW guru Gene Berg said that the soft nitriding produced stresses which caused the cracking. My car also had Solex 40PIIs that started life on a B Super 90, according to someone on the 912BBS. The work you did on this car is beyond amazing.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 года назад
My understanding is that roller bearings are best for high speed corners when the oil sloshes away from the oil pickup. 356's are wet sump so the rollers do better with intermittent oil pressure. The rollers don't do well with low rpm stop and go traffic.

$5000 for a 356? Take my damn money! Can't find a rusty, crusty, partial shell for that now. Nice resto, btw, especially since you had to learn to weld and do metal working. And that roller crank is probably still worth a fortune.

Green with brown interior is one of my favorite combos! There was a time when 356s were worth practically nothing. I bought mine just after prices really started to climb. $5000 was about my Max but looking back I should have taken out a loan and bought a better car. Live and learn!

I get what you're saying now , but was shocked to hear you say it may not have been worth it. A $5K 356? HAS to be worth $50-100K now. Maybe more? That's incredible, the 911 isn't and easy project but the bodywork on the 356 must have been more difficult. The TIG welds look fantastic on the large repairs! Its a lot of work but I think the 5G's were worth it, wrecked 356 with missing engines go for more nowadays
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 4 года назад
356s are hard to restore for sure. That is why it took so long and I learned as I went. $5k was on the low end in 1998. Today prices are way higher! Most cars available today have already had lots of repairs which can also make them harder to restore to original. Only my hood and battery box had been messed with.

@@GarageTimeAutoResto I'll check it out. I've had a '58 A coupe in my shed for a few years now and I'm about to tackle the body work. It used to be a racer in dry-ish South Africa from new, and it has been in Queensland, Australia for the last 30 years, so no rust, but a bit twisted and some very ugly track side body work to do. Back to bare metal I dare say.

Hard to keep a secret! I've mentioned this car a few times in the comments and interviews. The car has been 2 hours away for over two years, so it's been hard for me too. The 911 was supposed to be a spacer project while the 356 was out for paint. Then I got attached to this 911 too. It's a disease.

@@GarageTimeAutoResto Kudos! Well congratulations again on both! I'm not gonna lie...the Bahama Yellow grew on me when I saw her fully painted! Also, you opted for not keeping the inner door original colors! I that was a cool idea too...dang! They both are looking awesome! Looking for to seeing more along the way! Have a great weekend!

Pretty impressive brudda! Dogged determination saves another one from the heap. If you wouldn't mind doing a whole video on properly preparing patches for installation where the back side is not accesable after the patch is wielded in. This is especially important on pre 74 cars as they lack galvanized structure. Ive seen many options for weld through primers, but what really works long term for boxed in corrosion protection...? Your thoughts, some of the pros and cons of different solutions and what you chose to do and why would make for a super sweet episode or two.

@@guylandia2150 Here's the cliff notes version:. Plan your cuts so you have access. Often times instead of welding a patch you can replace the whole part. For example the longitudinals on the 356 didn't need a full replacement, but I wanted access to the inside and I don't have to metal finish a patch. Sometimes you need to cut the inner structure just to metal finish the outer. To prevent corrosion you can brush epoxy inside through the drain holes. I did this on my 911. I also use cavity wax after everything is painted. Boroscope cameras are your friend too for ongoing inspection and treatment.

You Sir are a bloody legend, such artistry and skill. How did you keep ant surface rust from occurring when the car was in bare metal?
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 2 года назад
Awe thanks. I use Dupont metal conditioner 5717S and a scotch bright pad. The chemical prevents flash rust for several months.

Did you have any concerns about chassis distortion since you were rotating the car on the Emory style Rack with the floor out? Given the amount of rust, would you media blast the car if you had it to do over?
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 2 года назад
You do need to be mindful of chassis distortion when removing parts such as floors/longitudinals. Nice thing about the Emory style rack is that it supports the car evenly front to rear. Best thing to do is measure often with Tram guages and verify there is no twist with spirit levels. It's all manageable, but don't just trust the rack or your garage floor. The factory gives us dimensions, so use them. Sand blasting for a very rusty car that will be torn apart a anyway makes sense. Otherwise dealing with sand is more hassle than it's worth plus the expense of it. I did spot blast a few areas.

Magnificent work! A true artist. Please explain how you were able to shape all the sheet metal to the correct curvature and specs? And were you able to find aftermarket body structural panels, A-arms, B-arms, supports, etc. from outside sources? I'm left speechless and amazed! Also, do you have videos on how to tig weld?
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 4 года назад
Thanks Ray! I used a combination of donor metal from parts cars and aftermarket metal from places like restoration design. I will say that no matter where the metal comes from it needs work to fit each car. That's just the nature of old hand built cars. A unibody car like a 356 is tough to restore, but doable if you take your time. I used hammer and dolly for years it seems😀. I love TIG welding! So much so I have an online and in person course now. Watch this video where I weld on some flares to my 911. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t2xomaxWhFc.html
