In this DIY, we install a Starter Switch Relay in our 1958 Porsche 356 A Cabriolet. The reason for this modification is to reduce the current that flows through the ignition switch when starting the car. The relay is from a Joe Leoni kit that includes the relay, all wiring, and instructions. The install is pretty straight forward, but I did run unto a small snag in that my car had a different connector (a ring) on the Solenoid than what was supplied in the kit (spade). Instead of chopping up the original wiring harness, I opted to build an additional bridge wire that I outline in the video. I did this for two reasons: I don’t want to alter the original wiring, and also, if the relay ever fails, I can quickly return it to the original state on the road if need be.
If you wish to purchase the relay kit, you can contact Joe at joe356electrics@gmail.com. Also, feel free to contact me with any questions and I’ll try to get you going.

Joe mentioned to me that the initial pull on the starter switch can be close to 40A! I didn't know it was that high! He also mentioned that my car was unusual with that ring connector on the solenoid. Most are spades. I have Joe's email in the description if you want to pick up one of his kits. He also has relays for the headlights that doubled the brightness on the car's lights! Totally worth it!. Franny

Wonderful video! I appreciate how you don't talk down to us and help us truly understand what is going on. Thank you.

A red ground strap? That's not very logical. Also adding another four electrical terminal connectors under the dirty and temperature fluctuating underside of the car, and in a place where it is exposed to some vibrations, doesn't seem like the greatest idea. I think I will mount mine somwhere better, of course with some really thick wires. But thanks to Joe for the idea and all his great work! I read that he passed away from cancer, sorry to hear that. And thanks to you for the nice and informative video, as always 🙂 Liked and subscribed 👍 I have a B T6 S90 here on the other side of the world.

Super detailed video. Thanks for doing this. Any chance for a video on the lights relay install ?

Well,... I already have that installed - did it quite some time before the channel. It is actually very straight forward. I should do a little walk around and show some of that stuff.

Franni hi from the UK. Thanks for the great vid on 5k the starter relay which I have done. I am having a cranking problem and it appears that it is my battery on its way out so I noticed in your video you do not have a ‘ conventional’ battery - it looks like an Optima. Can you confirm what battery you have and the model number please so I can get the correct one - or - do you stil recommend this battery having used it for some time now. Thanks and regards Sid

Hi Sid, we are using the 6V Optima (I think they sell only one). The footprint is a little different though. It is a tad too wide to fit in the cubby on the A Cars. Ours is turned 90° and strapped in with plenty of rubber insulation to insulate the positive terminal. It has been working great for us. I do keep it on a tender when the car is sitting for more than a week. Thanks! Franny

Hi, Frannie... realize this was months or years ago but I wonder what you or Joe Leone think of an extra ignition switch that allows one to turn the engine say, after a month of storage, for up to a 15-20 seconds to get the bearings on the crankshaft lubed before adding ignition? Always love your stuff. well thought out and very helpful. All the best to both of you in these trying times...

People think I'm crazy, but that is exactly what I do when the engine has sit long enough to dry up the carbs. If much rather rebuild a starter than an engine! Joe approved ;) f

Franny, my '59 coupe (Reutter 107520) also has the ring connector, not a spade, so I'm not convinced all late 'A's are not like that.

@HeidiandFranny 7 лет назад
Oh really... That is interesting. Joe was pretty surprised when I talked to him about it. But it seemed original to the solenoid and the wiring harness. That late T2 was a funny time I think. I have a couple videos to get out, but I'll be doing one soon on the electrical tune up and showing that our car is missing the distributor oil slot in the third piece. Cal found another and even Vic S. found one as well. Strange times... I'm guessing experimentation for the upcoming B (or just running out of A parts ;) ). Thanks for the comment and letting me know :) Franny

I'm so glad you posted this video, as I stopped installing my relay when it came time to cut wire. Just cleaning up the main OEM connections improved my cranking anyway. Now I will make an adapter cable like yours, and also install the relay box atop the bell cover, too. I was reluctant to hang it down in harm's way.

Hi I wonder if you can help me with a 356B problem. I am trying to install a Orpin series parallel switch in my 6 volt 356B to help with staring. I do have an installation book but nowhere in the book shows how to fit it to a 356. Have you any idea how to wire this in correctly? Or do you know of any one I could contact. Car electrical guys over here in Europe do not want to know. Many thanks for any help. Regards Norman

great video, just wondering, what voltage is this car? 6v or 12v? I think you refer to 6v in beginning but 12v at end of video.

+bud gnatek it's six. I am not sure why Franny would have said twelve. Heidi

thanks, not a big deal, but you may want to check your video at 8:44 for the 12v reference.

bud gnatek good catch! We both watched that video too. Yeah, it should say 6 not 12. Heidi

Brilliant video. Can you tell me if this relay would be suitable for the 6v system on a 1958 Beetle?
@HeidiandFranny

I would think so. Pretty similar electrical systems. Joe also sells a headlight relay that really helps a lot!

A couple of things- for the love of Mike get some coveralls,lol.You are going to ruin your clothes. secondly - I understand the rationale here because the starter switch is so expensive to lighten the load as it were,there just has to be a better place to put the relay.It's one thing to install on a lift but another kettle of fish in the field. Even McGuyver herself may have difficulty pulling that off.This brings me to another point.I know I know keep it original is the mantra but not changing the eyelet connector? Seems a bit much. In additional back to my point of originality and relay location-I'm guessing there are no other places without drilling a hole and putting in a grommet in some sheet metal. Yes on my Beetles I do that but completely understand reticence or unwillingness in others especially in your case to do so. Since i don't know the anatomy of 356s I can't say for sure but I would sure look for a better location for that relay. BTW I just changed my brake light circuit tonight on my 65 bug because I got so stinking tired of having to change those terrible hydraulic brake switches every 9 months. Required a relay too as the switch was rated for 5 amps and my circuit exceeded that considering I run a third brakelight in the lower rear window. Anyway cheers. ps think about some coveralls.

Shouldn't there be a wire running off the starter to the voltage regulator? Or is that bundled in with the main power connection where we couldn't see it because it was wrapped in the harness?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 7 лет назад
Hi Emil, I wanted to look that up. Yes, there is a hot (+6V) off the big starter cable that then travels on to the Voltage Regulator (B+ terminal). It must be bundled into the harness. Joe Leoni's (356 Electrics) diagrams show it coming off the starter as well. Great question! Another reason to pull the battery ground before fussing with the wiring around the engine bay. Franny

Hi Frannie . I disconnect the +ve side as the main large wire to the starter is live and can short out despite the earth ground being removed.. cheers Sid
