Porsche Boxster for many years was considered the “poor man’s 911”. Is that a fair description? Back in the early 1990s Porsche was in a bit of a financial difficulty. This is when Porsche first showed off its Boxster concept. The roadster was inspired by 356 convertible, and 550 Spyder. The concept presented in early 1993 was well-liked, and three years later first Boxsters hit the showrooms. Boxster name was derived from Porsche’s famous flat engine. This engine layout is known as “boxer”. Cayman, which is the coupe variant of the Boxster, appeared ten years later, two years after 2nd generation Boxster was launched. Third generation debuted in 2012, and in 2016 it was given quite a big facelift. So big in fact, that the number 718 was put in front of Boxster/Cayman name. 718 is Porsche’s tribute to a mid-engine sports car from late 50s, early 60s. And like the new Boxster, 718 also had a 4-cylinder engine.

Another great review! The slalom shot was awesome. Notwithstanding the different aural experience, the 718 is a better all-around car than the 981. I liked the 981, I love the 718.

Miata driver here as well, and also driving it open as often as I can even now, at temps unter 0°C. *fist bumps you* Great review! Everyone else seems to be complaining about the exhaust note, but to be honest, I kinda like it. The 7500 rpm redline also seems fine, 8-8.5K would've been nice, but I guess you can't have that with turboed cars outside the supercar range…

Great review, that first minute is one of the best looking (bridge drone shot) and funniest intros I've seen.

I love the last shots, of the suspension, and in general, underneath the car. You should do this more often, in every test review in fact. Also, some shots from the engine bay would be interesting when comparing and watching a car review, as complex engines tend to cost more in maintenance, and that could be a deciding factor in buying a car. For example, when I was researching for a new car I excluded since the beginning the cars at which the space for changing a light bulb was too cramped, as I couldn't change it myself, so that means added cost to your normal service hours.

This one doesn't have an engine bay as such. You only have access to oil and washer fluid caps. But I will try and do more engine bay shots in the future.
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo 7 лет назад
M. CTR you need tools to access the engine bay in Boxster... very well hidden.

About the downsizing complaints: people forget or don't know that the first Porsches had Flat 4 engines. So it's basically back to the roots :D
@konanxyz6567
@konanxyz6567 7 лет назад
it sounds good for a flat 4, if you arent a car person you would think it sounds good and that the car looks good. idk what is with all the "supercar experts" saying it sounds like a tractor or a sad jaguar... it dosent need to sound amazing for it to be a good car.
@kegel614
@kegel614 7 лет назад
I agree, it has a nice note.
@Fotznerwin27
@Fotznerwin27 7 лет назад
SpadesCS Of course it doesn't need a special sound to be a good car. BUT as a sports car it actually needs a quite special note to give this thrilling feel only a sports car provides. People compare this Boxster with its predecessor which in fact sounded truely amazing while this turbo flat 4 sounds relatively lame compared to a NA flat 6. Even though it's a rather nice sounding 4 banger in here, most people will concern that this sound may fit a Subaru but not a Porsche because they still remember that glorious flat 6 soundtrack. But hey, we have to go with our time. BTW I'm not a fan of this turbo flat 4. For a Subie? Ok! For a Porsche? Nope. Not a modern Porsche...

@TassieLorenzo 7 лет назад
If you've driven a Subaru WRX or STi with aftermarket exhaust, this 718 sounds very similar. Plus the very enthusiastic programmed exhaust crackles makes it sound like it has a misfire.

I agree with Mr. Graham the first minute of your video together with your funny intro just hooked me, funny enough I actually witnessed C....... snorting neighbours with 911 Targa's in the 80's go down hill rather fast or should I say Porsche fast!!

Great review as ever, but why does nobody test the bare-bones 2.0 Boxster? This would be the one to go for; no frills fun - an honest sports car.

I wish. A couple of months ago I asked Porsche for the most basic 911 they have on press fleet in Poland. I think 50th Anniversary Edition was the closest to stock they had :) Truth is manufacturers want to show off as many features as possible, hence you rarely see low-spec test cars in reviews.

Yes, unfortunately true. Ab EUR 53.646,00 inkl. MwSt. And still does 274 km.

If I were in the market... I would go for a 3-5 year old certified pre-owned for 35-45 Euro in Germany. Definitely the base model and a manual transmission. In the real world, a few tenths of a second faster to 100kmh doesn't matter. I don't mind the 4-cylinder, but is it lighter than the 6 to the point that it is more nimble or does it have no impact? For example, the Mustang handles much better with the 4 cyl. ecoboost than with the V-8, but thats a big motor.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 7 лет назад
The weight difference is negligible (20-30 kg depending on the spec and gearbox). You'll probably get more difference in on-track handling between different sets of tires, and if you go for active suspension. I agree. Cayman, MT, as little other options, as possible.

I bought a red 2017 Corvette 1LT manual transmission with performance exhaust, black wheels, red calipers, red seats, carbon badge package. Why? Because base Porsche Cayman ride was too stiff for me, no targa top (I didn't want the convertible's expense and replacement in a few years), not as much acceleration for the same $55k price, too low ground clearance for everyday use on public roads and shopping centers. I have no plans to track it.

I have a Boxster, but it is just a fact of life that soft tops don't look as sleek (at least with roof up) as a hard top. But the experience of the Boxster is so much better... like right now-now, warm day fading out with orangey evening sun, roof down - even idling in a traffic jam is 'awesome' in a Boxster. If you don't kick a Cayman around hard, it basically feels like driving a Golf in city traffic (the noise inside). So it is a matter of preference - my father once took a ride in a 911 cabrio in his life - literally almost 40 years on, he still talks about what a shitty experience is was lol. He didn't even want a ride in my Boxster in 2 years - a man who knows what he wants.. ;) Some people fail to understand that a soft top of today is not a pos from the 70s anymore. Closed soft tops are basically folding hard tops. E.g. with Porsche and others, there are magnesium or aluminium panels in the roof, which basically make it a lot like a folding hard top; Porsche say they do the soft tops because the customers want the looks; technically, they could give you hard tops... but you are correct of course. And e.g. 991 cabrio has been designed from scratch to be a cabrio, so Porsche say the body rigidity of coupe and cabrio are the same since 991, unlike previous generations... Anyway, the Boxster has come a long way... starting out with that somewhat stingy design with one air intake on the left only, then two, then face-lifted; the 981 and 982, the design has matured in to a complete car.

I don't know, I feel like I want to like the 718 but can't. There's something about it which just feels too much of a compromise somewhere, although I'm sure the 718 is a great drive. There's just too much missing for me when you don't get that beautiful 6 cylinder Porsche engine sound... But you can get a used 911 for the same price so...

Don't kid yourself that this 4 cylinder uses less fuel than the old 6. When pushed this will pollute more - you don't get more torque and horsepower and lower emissions at the same time.
