Does your 911 Have a loose steering wheel? This video will show you how to remove the steering wheel and fix the faulty bearing yourself.
The inner plastic portion of the steering shaft bearing wears out and eventually crumbles away causing excessive play in the steering column. Instead of spending $70 on a new bearing that will only fail again, all you need to do is install the $15 metal support ring bushing that takes place of the worn plastic inside the bearing.
Required Parts:
Support Ring Busing PN: 928-347-739-02

I actually hesitated to do this myself until I saw this video. Took the same amount of time for a first timer. Thanks for uploading!

What the hell! I just drove my ‘88 and heard a bit of a rattle from my dash. Parked in the garage and moved the wheel and it felt loose. Didn’t say word, just came in the house made a lunch and opened RU-vid and this was on my feed. With no search. Are they reading minds now?😳

My understanding is that this repair can do damage after 5 or so years if you do not use a high-pressure lube such as HHS when installing. And that lube should be reapplied every few years.

Good to know. I'd be surprised to see that roller bearing wear out just from steering inputs, but I could see how replacing the original plastic with metal could cause the rest of the bearing to wear faster.
@khamul02
@khamul02 2 года назад
@@TrulyMotors A shop in WA has reported the issue. Who knows what the owner was doing to accelerate the wear. Better safe than sorry with a lube though. Of course, there is also a nylon busing available that should be a bit safer.

Hi. I have been trying to pull the horn pad with great amount of force but still can’t budge it. Do you have a technique in how to pop the cover? My model is 911, 1988 year. Thanks.

As long as it has the same steering wheel as in the video, it should pull off. Try a quick, swift pull. That's about all the advice I have. Good luck!

Any way of knowing if this part would fit a 1985 944, My steering column also jiggles around a bit and I'm wondering if this part would also fit my model car

Enough time has transpired since this install to ask the question - has the 928 part worked out ok, or has the bearing on the steering shaft noticably worn? I just noticed my SC's steering wheel moving up/down this morning, so I'm weighing up my options...
@TrulyMotors

Yep, still holding up great.

@@TrulyMotors That's great news. Do you think its worth trying to put some grease between the two as well? Might help?
@TrulyMotors
@TrulyMotors Год назад
@@dra911 Grease definitely wouldn't hurt. That said, the problem with these bearings isn't the bearing wearing excessively, it's the inner plastic race breaking down and falling apart causing the play. Installing the new metal race pushes out what's left of the plastic race and takes up the play.

@@TrulyMotors Makes sense, thanks for the reply. A quick project for me then over the winter break! Cheers.

you did not show taking it out...or did I miss something? I dont see how I can get hold of it and slide it out. where can I get the part, do yo have a part number. 1985 911 3.2 Thanks!!
@TrulyMotors

There was very little left of the original plastic bearing. Hammering in the metal piece simply pushes the remaining plastic bits out of the back of the bearing. Usually when the bearings get this bad, there's so little plastic left that you don't even have to worry about the leftovers being pushed out the back. The part number is in the description.

@@TrulyMotors Wow!!! Your reply certainly clears up a lot of questions. My SC was sitting in the garage for several years with the steering wheel removed. Now, reassembling, I could see something was missing but I couldn't believe that I had dis-assembled things down to that level. So, apparently the extreme looseness had always been there while the car was in service, but I had never focused on it. Thank you sooo much!

Is this the same for earlier cars like a 1970?
@TrulyMotors

Not completely sure to be honest. But if you have a similar problem, it's worth pulling the steering wheel off and taking a look.
