The Porsche 918 Spyder is the successor model to the Porsche Carrera GT, adopting a power unit developed based on the engine of the prototype racing car Porsche RS Spyder that was active in the American Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is Porsche's first parallel full hybrid road car equipped with an electric motor on the rear, and 918 units were produced in a limited number by 2015.
The new machine Porsche 963, which will participate in the IMSA series, the WEC World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2023, has been developed based on the power unit of the 918 Spyder.
The body design, which is based on the Porsche 917K, Porsche's first winning machine at Le Mans, has excellent racing aerodynamic performance, and all body panels are made of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic). The chassis also uses a carbon monocoque.
The vehicle weight with a 138kg lithium-ion battery is 1674kg, 294kg heavier than the 1380kg Carrera GT, but this is due to the adoption of a full hybrid system. (1634kg, minus 40kg with the optional Weissach package.)
The midship mounted V8 DOHC 32-valve natural aspiration engine produces a maximum output of 608ps at 8700rpm from a displacement of 4593cc. at 3000 rpm, the maximum output of the system is 887 ps and the maximum torque is 1280 Nm.
The front/rear weight distribution is 43:57, and a 4WD system is used in which the front is driven by an electric motor and the rear is driven by an electric motor and engine. The transmission is a 7-speed DCT, and in race mode it realizes quick shift up and down operations suitable for circuit driving.
The high-power 918 Spyder has a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 2.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 345 km/h. Although it is nearly 300 kg heavier than the Carrera GT, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.3 seconds and top speed by 15 km/h. And the lap time at the Nürburgring is 15 seconds faster than the Carrera GT.
The tires installed are Michelin Pilot Sports Cup 2 tires certified by Porsche, and different front and rear sizes of 265/35ZR20 in the front and 325/30ZR21 in the rear were adopted. The brakes are equipped with Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) as standard, and the front 6-piston and rear 4-piston brake calibers are equipped with large-diameter brake rotors of 410mm at the front and 390mm at the rear.
An upward exhaust layout is adopted, with the intake system on the outside of the V-bank of the engine and the exhaust system on the inside.
The rear wheels are equipped with rear axle steering, electronically controlled LSD, and traction control, realizing stability control that matches high-spec driving.
In E-drive mode, it is possible to run a mileage of about 30 km with a full charge, and when the battery capacity is low, you can start the engine in sports mode and drive to full charge in a short time.
The technology of the 918 Spyder, which was developed as a study model that adopted a hybrid that looked ahead to the future, was continued in the Le Mans prototype racing car Porsche 919 that debuted afterwards.
