Thank you! Would've never realized those extra procedures. I've only been tilting it up. Being too nervous to screw up the mechanism. Next, I'll be looking through your vids about wheel offsets for '88 turbo's, and how after market fuchs, are f...ed.( I can't be the only one in an unfortunate situation).

I really enjoy your 944 vids. Thanks for making them. I never realized I could tilt the 83 manual sunroof. I imagine I can keep it like this while I drive?
@edredas
@edredas 7 лет назад
Thank you! Yes, you can drive with the manual roof tilted like this! These instructions are straight from the owners manual. There should also be a strap that snaps to the roof for extra security, but the strap is missing from this car and several other manual roof cars I've driven but I've never had an issue with the roof moving around. I hope that helps!

@edredas
@edredas 7 лет назад
Its been a while but I've been to Ottawa and British Columbia, Canada but I think the shirt is from Old Navy though. Eventually, I want to make a video on replacing the gears, along with adjusting the micro-switches and slip-clutch. Many times when they strip it is because the slip-clutch no longer slips and it strips them clean when you go to retract the arms. So don't forget to adjust your slip-clutch or they could just strip again!
@edredas
@edredas 7 лет назад
Not a hard job but adjusting the micro-switches can be a headache. I need to make a video on this and how to adjust everything. I just did this in my '88 before I began making videos so now all my sunroofs work.

When I operate my switch, I can hear the motor running, but nothing happens. How can I remove the sunroof panel in this case? There seem to be two metal pins locking the rear of the panel in place. How do I make them retract? Thanks.
@edredas
@edredas 2 года назад
Pull back the carpet on the left side rear and remove the cover for the sunroof motor. Once removed have someone operate the switch while you watch to see if the cable and mechanism is moving. If it is moving then you have stripped gears, but if it isn't the slip-clutch is mis-adjusted.

On my 86 924S sunroof the metal strips only go up 1/3 of the way and then I hear a crunching sound and it doesn't go up any further. They work perfectly within the 1/3 range and go up and down flawlessy but past that is not possible. What do you suppose the problem could be?

Really clear and practical, great content - thank you. I’m shopping for a 944 vs Saab in Montréal this month, looking for a highway cruiser and fun car. Subscribed. Also god that fucking door chime. :)
@edredas
@edredas 6 лет назад
Thanks! Yeah I thought about pulling that chime before filming but I just didn't want to mess with it. That said, I've worked on a few Saab's (90's era 900's) before and while the 944 isn't exactly the easiest car to work on its a heck of a lot easier than a Saab. Probably a lot more reliable too... not to say every 944 is reliable but they can be. I drive mine daily and have even gone cross-country without any issue. The 944 can be a nice cruiser, but as with anything you might have to put a lot of money into it in order to get it right.

Hello Edredas .I´m from europe. Thanks for the 944 videos.This is great. What you use to lubricate the mechanism of the sunroof?
@edredas
@edredas 6 лет назад
I believe the factory used white Lithium grease but its known to dry up over time but it takes a while to do so. Alternatively, you can use moly grease. Its harder to get off your hands and you may have to be careful to not touch the arms when you're wearing nice clothes but is a little more durable and won't dry out. I hope that helps!

Hey question what are the 4 black toggle switches for located on center console for? I have a 1983 944 and I don't see them doing anything. I thought they were aftermarket but I have seen them on other 944.
@edredas
@edredas 5 лет назад
Hi, I'm guessing you mean the four switches near the ashtray? The number will vary depending on the options on the car. So many times they're just blanks. However, in order they are the side mirror selector switch, headlight washer, rear fog lamps (ROW only), rear wiper. I hope that helps!

@@edredas hey thanks for fast response. I just bought my dream car it's a 1983 5 speed in Pasadena yellow. It needs a little work but all and all for its age it's not that bad. Runs good but could use a rebuild on the front end. I did do my research and found the 83 is the only one without power steering so I don't have that element to deal with. Was told this was a rare car all and all. Whatever info you can provide will be great. Thanks for your videos

hi ! on my 944 early electric the lock work(engage and disengage) but no tilt , what i should check?
@edredas
@edredas 5 лет назад
So it will engage and disengage with the key in, but not raise and lower in other position? If so, that would rule out the microswitch between the visors. However if could be a few things from the limit switch at the motor being incorrectly adjusted or the wiring from the key position. If the switch wiring is bad then it won't switch over and let you tilt it and if the limit switch is out of adjustment then it will think its fully raised when its just in the lock position. I hope that helps!
@kdudutse
@kdudutse 5 лет назад
@@edredas thanks, looks like limit switch because - when i locking or unlocking the motor runs as long as i keep button pressed it not stops itself when lock is actually open or closed
@edredas
@edredas 5 лет назад
Gotcha, so if the motor is still running it sounds like the slip clutch is a little too loose. When this happens there won't be enough friction engaging the motor to raise the roof. Just be sure to tighten it only enough to raise the roof and not so much you strip anything when disengaging it, since there isn't a limit switch that stops the motor when removing the roof. There's a write up on clarks garage that should help!

I'll see what I can do! For now you might could try pulling the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulator and see if any fuel dribbles out. If the FPR has gone bad it can result in rough idle. I hope that helps!

Hello Edredas! Thanks for all your videos. They really help. I have a question: I just wanted to replace the plastic gears of the sunroof mechanism on my 968. Therefore I wanted to bring the arms to the position where they are fully retracted. Like that I wanted to create a reference point that I know that I need to install the arms to the lowest position once I replaced the gears. In preparation of that, I pressed the switch to fully retract the arms. But the electric motor didn't switch off and nearly the entire gear cable ended in the trunk of the car. Do you have any idea what might have caused the mechanism to malfunction? A faulty relay of the sunroof mechanism? Or does the electric motor somehow senses where to stop? Does this mechanism finds it upper and lower point by resistance? Tomorrow am plugging 12V to the motor to get the cable back in but I have no idea how to calibrate the mechanism. Do you have any hint? Is there a clutch which senses resistance and switches off the motor like on an electric window? Thanks a lot in advance for giving out a hint if possible. Best wishes from Taiwan (I am probably the only one in Taiwan who ever worked on this mechanism as only a handful transaxles were sold into this country)
@edredas
@edredas 6 лет назад
Hi, this is a common issue! To get the cable to go back in all you need to do is have the ignition on and either have the sunroof installed or simply press the microswitch near the dome light as you press the raise button. Then the cable should feed itself back through. Now on to the issue of why it is coming out like that. Normally when the gears are in good shape they come to a stop but there is no micro-switch limiter used, like the other two functions. Instead a slip-clutch on the motor is used to prevent the gears from stripping. So you will continue to hear the motor run but it won't not damage the gears. When the slip-clutch is too tight it will strip the gears and shoot the cable out. That said, you must to adjust the slip-clutch before installing new gears or they will just strip again! There's a write up on Clark's-garage on the process which is pretty simple. Once you have that sorted then installing the new gears is straight forward. Its been a while, but I believe the easiest method is to have the sunroof on an the arms attached in lowest position. That way they are in sync with each other. I'll try to make a video on all this soon, and let me know if you have any more questions!
@palatinaworks7251
@palatinaworks7251 6 лет назад
Hello Edredas! Thank you soooo much for your answer. Thanks for all the details. I haven't pushed the microswitch near the dome light when I tried to get the cable back in. Nothing happened when I pressed the switch next to the gear lever. So I thought I will get 12V to the motor directly. But your answer is so clear, that I am confident to believe that the sunroof will work tomorrow again. I furthermore think that your channel is the best for 944. I am not saying that to please you, I really think that. Best wishes! Andreas PS: Next week I might purchase my third transaxle in Taiwan.

Weekend just started in Taiwan and I am working on my 928 and 968 again. Thanks for your tip last week. It of course worked. The sunroof-cable is back to the correct position and end switches work correctly. But now somehow my central locking doesn't work anymore. Is the central locking connected to the sunroof-switch somehow? But foremost I want to thank you once again. Best wishes Andreas
