Porsche 944 gets 6.5" round rear speakers!

I swapped out the small 4x6" rear speakers with 6.5" round for better sound. I used the JBL CLUB622. I then moved the 4x6s I put in last year (JBL GX-6428) into the doors. The doors are limited to about 1-7/8" of depth due to the window track so not all 4x6s will fit, but the rears have plenty of depth.
The sound is definitely better with the larger speakers as you can get more bass, but if you really want enough bass to overcome the noise of the car, you need a subwoofer. This was an easy project that was worth the effort.

Hey dude, those JBL work with 3OHMS impedance, wich stereo system are you using? As faar as i know, almost all Stereo radios, work with 4OHMS... i just made this mistake... having speakers working with less resistence than the stereo, will overhead the stereo causing to burn... untill that happend, either the stereo doesnt work, or work but the sound quality will be much under the standart from the speakers.

Nice vid! Would it have been possible to install those rear speakers without that aluminum plate? or did you use the plate for it to be extra secured?

You can do it without the plate, but I'd be afraid of it wobbling too much. You can use other materials like thin wood or plastic if you can't work with aluminum.

Thank you for the tutorial ! I wanted to do the same but…it’s different in my 944. No plate for round speackers and I won’t drill. So I have installed 4*6… 😅

Is yours an early model? This is an '87 so maybe they changed the interior panel at some point.

I'm very happy with it. The bass is better than the stock 4x6s, but I also have a subwoofer in the rear that makes a bigger difference. The car has a pretty loud low tone that makes it difficult to really hear a lot of bass.

@@alexandreradermacker8803 It's a Sundown Audio 8" driver. I had it in another vehicle from 2015 and what makes it great for this application is that it only requires a bit less than a 1 cubic foot sealed enclosure that I (poorly) custom fit into the drivers side rear storage compartment.

'87. There is ample room if you want to trim sheet metal to fit a much larger speaker.
