Hey Brent, really enjoy your videos, and I use them all the time. This time however, I've hit a snag. I'll need to reseal the oil cooler on my 85.5 944 and while a reseal kit is cheap, a retrofit OPRV is a third of used engine and a new case seems unobtainable. For a free-time wrencher like me, would reusing the old OPRV and case be catastrophic?
@edredas
@edredas 5 лет назад
I think you will be fine. I have reused the three-piece oprv many times without issue. That isn't always the case and its because of those situations that I tell those that its best to go ahead and replace it to avoid any issues.

I make sure to polish the original 3 piece spring style OPRV so it performs extremely smoothly and haven't had any problems, but am upgrading one of my pre-87's to the retrofit OPRV and 6R housing as directed by factory.

Iam sure there is a reason for the new modified oil cooler/ filter houseing . But it does look i think over complicated in design .now is there a .free standing oil cooler . As a bolt on To the radiator pack ?. Which in turn may cure any water / oil cross over to the existing engine???? I expect the engine would need a side plate over the space for the oil pressure relief valve!!!!and for the sender unit.....
@edredas
@edredas 5 месяцев назад
The turbo models have an external oil cooler that uses a plate to block off the coolant. However, they use the same seals which can also fail and cause mixing...

I have an early housing that I guess I need to replace...has anyone ever just machined down those 1mm lips on the inside instead of paying for a whole new housing? Any reason why that would be a bad idea (ie. other differences with the newer housings)? Enjoying my first engine tear-down with my '84 944...thanks!
@edredas
@edredas 4 года назад
Probably could. I can’t see any other differences. I have a few 5R housing I was going to have a machine shop smooth flat and then remove the number so that I would know in the future they were machined. That said, a 6R housing usually isn’t much and I wouldn’t really try to smooth it down at home since you could potentially mess it up but a machine shop could do it right for a few bucks. I hope that helps!

Hey Brent, I found milky oil on my dipstick today and the coolant reservoir is now low with some gunk in it as well. It has been running only a 1/4 way on the temperature gauge and never over heated. Does that sound like the oil cooler seals giving out to you?
@edredas
@edredas 5 лет назад
Yep, unfortunately it sounds like they have failed...
@johnrichmond4083
@johnrichmond4083 5 лет назад
@@edredas Is there a certain process you suggest for flushing out the engine and coolant to get all the gunk out? thanks and enjoy the videos
@edredas
@edredas 5 лет назад
@@johnrichmond4083 There's a few coolant flushes at walmart that are rather cheap. I used one to remove some rust inside the cooling system once on another car. That said, I've only seen the coolant in the oil so I had to do the rod bearings and clean that engine out manually. So how good a cheap flush would be at removing oil is unknown, but worth a shot!

Great video! Question: how does the OPRV work? As the oil pressure builds, how does that move the piston? I feel like the small hole at the end of the piston is something to do with it, but can't work it out!
@edredas
@edredas 5 лет назад
As the pressure builds from the oil pump the piston is pushed back out of the way and oil is allowed to flow back directly into the oil pan. This bleeds pressure off so the oil pressure can be regulated. I hope that helps!
@JulianBunn
@JulianBunn 5 лет назад
@@edredas Got it, I think! So the end of piston is getting the full pressure of the oil pump, which pushes the piston in so that the oil gets pushed into the oil cooler through those four axial holes at the end of the OPRV and then into the pan?
@edredas
@edredas 5 лет назад
@@JulianBunn Something like that. When the OPRV is closed, all the oil goes to the cooler, then as it gets full pressure it opens up or pushes back the piston, then that oil goes through the holes and gets dumped back into the pan. I hope that makes sense. So basically, the default state is closed with all the oil going to the cooler.

Look around at different part sellers such as 944 Barn, Plyhammers Porsche, and 944 Online. One of them should have one. I don't recommend reusing the older style. The cooler and its seals are as critical as the belts in my opinion since when they fail they will make a mess of the engine. Good luck!

Check out the videos on the Nautic Blue 944. I show how to replace the turbo oil cooler seals in one of those. It's very similar to the N/A and even has two seals, but you don't need the shims. Good luck!

Hey Brent, I read in the tech bulletin that it says the oil pressure relief valve is “not serviceable”. Does this mean I should not take the valve apart to change the inside o ring ? Or do you think it means something else
@edredas
@edredas 2 года назад
Correct, it isn't serviceable, but they mean to not remove 'C' clip at the top and mess with the spring inside. It's perfectly fine to replace the O-ring at the base and put it back together. Just be sure to use lube when reassembling. I hope that helps!

Quick question regarding the new housings. I'm currently doing a reseal on my 84 N/A and it unfortunately has the old 5R with the three piece OPRV. If I got a 6R housing am I able to use my three piece OPRV or do I have to upgrade to the retrofit one piece? Thanks in advance!
@edredas
@edredas 3 года назад
You can reuse the three-piece if you like. I do recommend the one piece since they work way better but most of the time there are no issues. Good luck!

@@edredas Thanks for the reply! I'd love to use the one piece OPRV but finding used ones are difficult. My local Porsche dealer wants 500$ Canadian for a new one. I'll keep searching around and see if I can find a one piece.

Hi I have a question why cant you reuse the early housing? Why do you have to go to the later one?
@edredas
@edredas 3 года назад
Not a lot of information is known as to why they changed but according to Porsche themselves the early 5R housings are to be discarded and not reused. If one was to speculate, it is known that the oil cooler seals can fail. When they do, coolant can enter the oil and vice-versa. Once coolant is in the oil, the acids that prevent corrosion in the cooling system will attack the bearings requiring them to be replaced. So it is just as critical to replace the oil seals as the timing belt. The early 5R oil coolers had a flange inside them that was removed on the later 6R housing that used a plastic spacer instead. Because of this, they use a different reseal kit and even if you did decide to reuse your housing, the only reseal kits are for the 6R housing so it would not work correctly with the 5R housing. This could cause even more premature failure. I hope that helps!

I see you have had some of the same experiences I have had with the forums...don't get me wrong they can be a great source of information and a good source for tutorials BUT sometimes the "experts" on the forums tend to be a bit shall we say elitist. I had a few experiences on the VW TDI forum that pretty well made me realize that at least some of these "experts" were only experts in their own minds...and this was over a simple turn signal indicator problem, lol. Fantastic video! Thanks!!
