Porsche 944 Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement

One very obvious maintenance item that needed addressing when I purchased my 1983 Porsche 944 was a rear wheel bearing. You could hear a percussive groan/whine at any speed over 40mph. The 944 is notorious for weak wheel bearings so I decided to tackle both rear wheel bearings as preventative maintenance. I would highly recommend purchasing a bearing puller kit that has different sized disks for pressing out the bearing. The rear wheel bearing is a simple process, but can get very messy with all of the grease required and used during the disassembly and assembly process.

Thank you so much for this content! Really helpful! I’ve had my 944 since 1986 (it’s a 1985 NA) I’ve done a complete engine rebuild and lots more thanks to hero’s such as yourself that are willing to share their work. Recently I developed a rear-end noise and I was thinking it might be the rear wheel bearings. I took a stab at dismantling the whole assembly on the passenger side (where I believe the “wurring” noise is coming from) and was lost. I could not make sense of that needed to come apart in order to reach and inspect the inner and outer bearings. Thanks to your video and dialogue, I believe that I can make a successful go at this. Could you have held the axle stationary with the 36mm nut to undo the CV bolts? This setup is almost identical to US market VW Beetles 1969 on!

Yes, we probably could have, but I am not always the most clever 😂 and I think we had the 36mm off already

You did a great job with this. I assembled all the parts to do my early car and thought that the sealed inner bearing you used was only for the later cars. Do you have any info on that? My car is already done, so was just asking because curious.

Thanks! I purchased what Rock Auto had listed for my car, the part is: BECK/ARNLEY 0513442. I haven't had any issues with it and I've put about 3500 miles on the car since the installation.
