Had a chance to drive a 964 Carrera 4 for a bit in 1990, I fell in love with that air cooled flat-6 sound as it rushes through the RPMs. So I'd say loose that loud exhaust and keep the engine stock. 0-60 under 5sec is plenty quick for that old chassis.
Darryl has done some thoughtful modifications. I would not do ITBs. When we were modifying my 964, we looked into ITBs. Parts & labor for the ITBs & the stand alone engine management system were in the neighborhood of $20K. What might be a bigger bang for the buck would be to change the gear ratios. We rebuilt the transmission and changed 2nd - 5th for around $13K (parts & labor). By removing the overdrive function of 5th (and shortening its overlap with 4th), we were able to shorten the ratios of the other gears. The effect is noticeably perkier acceleration, better torque gear choices for cornering and a significant boost to driver engagement.
Bought my first 964 in 2014, after seeing prices increase through 2013. Since then 4 964’s, 2 996’s (1 of GT3), 1 997, 1 991.2 & 1 Taycan had passed through my garage. Still have the Taycan. In the process of buying a 997.2 and a 993😇
Will! I really look forward and enjoy these owner interviews so much. To hear these owners talk about the pride and joy, cool stories in ownership. You can view Porsche vlogs with all the speed demon GT's with all the numbers and hype, but cant beat this... More owner interviews. Made me laugh at the stereo comment. I been told update to android/apple play, but here again, I never ever turn on the stereo not even air cooled 😁 Great job on the Channel.
My car went through a full engine rebuild at 197k miles bc of a broken head stud. I would look into rennline valve covers and new gaskets then go from there. It may solve your leaks. ITBs are a nice novelty(and I would love to have them) but you can spend the extra 5k+ on something else. I would get new wheels, secondary muffler delete, and fix up the interior a bit. You can also upgrade your evaporator from Griffiths for better ac efficiency.
Great looking C2! There is something about the narrow body 964 and cup wheels. I have a Miami Blue widebody 964, but I love both body styles. 19 years??!! Congrats! Oh, and I vote individual throttle bodies. :D
I would definitely do the top end of the engine but not sure how far away from stock I would go. Performance mods on the top end would be great but definitely keep the original parts which it sounds like John has done if you do mod it. Obviously focus on reliability mods first and then performance. That would be my priority if it were mine. Beautiful car and I’m thinking I need an air cooled example someday!
Don’t even think about selling this car! The car is fantastic because you have owned it! Regarding the stereo issue: I special ordered my 2017 911 Carrera S cabriolet new, and selected the amazing Burmester stereo system. The engine sound is phenomenal, but the stereo sound is also phenomenal. I listen to both every single day.
I started in Truimphs as well, first a Spitfire and then GT-6+, followed by MGB. The Porsche was a something my wive bought despite telling her “No!” See how that ended as it was put in the corner of the Garage, after a failure for years. I wouldn’t work on it... She wanted to sell it recently and I started working to find why Relay #41 was not getting power. A couple months and the changing of numerous components, I started to like the engineering (except relay #41) and I bought it from her. She made a profit... Well got her running with the last thing checked of course and in the middle of a restore and she is a hoot.
Speak of the devil... Right before I clicked this video I saw an ad for Fabspeed's ITBs and those bad boys are NOT cheap. $15,000 to be exact. Probably 100% worth the wallet punch but, lord, that is a big pill to swallow.
Definitely the MOMO Steering wheel and the ITB's!! Also, No Radio for me... Just put a block off plate in the dash and am planning to remove the speakers from the car eventually. Want to hear that flat 6 sound!
Great video. I had a guards red 1991 964 20 years ago. I loved that twin plug motor and the automatic spoiler pop up at 40 mph. Sold it for a 87 cab which I still have. I prefer the more rawness of the pre-airbag, no antilock brakes and no power steering cars. Where is that shop located?
Praise the lowered! Would the ITBs be for sound & cool factor? Take your time & do your homework keeping in mind how you want to use your car & what budget is available. Check some of the builds on Pelican for some ideas.
I'm only a casual Porsche observer but I like this model (which I've never heard of) because of no tails or fins. Is it a mid-performance model for its time? Still waiting to hear about the engine displacement. Time to look them up!
I rarely listen to the stereo in my car unless I am driving a long distance on the interstate. When I'm out having fun, the motor is the music. As far as the mods, do whatever makes you feel good. Make it personal to you. Keeping everything original is overrated unless it is going into a museum.
I need the spelling on the Chip as I have the Lightweight Flywheel blues.... Did the MOMO steering wheel with a airbag by-pass with bridge to dump the light, which was driving me crazy anyway.
Thanks as it appears I have one from a Storsek conversion and I did put a Rennsport goldenrod shift-link in. There was a dual exhaust and a few other items and I will do a visual on the flywheel to confirm. Just doesn’t behave well with engine unloading and revs quickly and confident this is the case... Oh if you get the MoMo, get the addtional horn attachment or you won’t have one. Easy job...
If you occasionally blow on your mug most people will assume it’s coffee Will Someone’s hit the 👎 and I’m going to hunt them down 😂 Happy Easter 🐣 🏴 Iain
Great piece. Just curious, what is the vehicle behind you in the intro? Looks like a Guards Red '89 or '90. Darryl's Guards Red '92 is beautiful. Thanks for putting this together. PS - Exhaust, did the entire rebuild but added supercharger which increase approx 90hp
Hi Will, thanks for the video...here are my comments.... Radio, if possible, should be stock even you never turn it on. Just from a visual perspective 😉. Engine? He should do what ever he wants and what ever will give him good feelings. Question! What is the story behind his german car plate at the front of the car? And! Yours in your backround 😳 from Munich ❤️. You should have one from Stuttgart...Plant 1...where your cars were built 👍🏼. Regards Frank (ˋ94, 993, indish red)
Great owner story. The droopy wrong placement of the emblem on the rear deck lid is killing - please - either put it right or just remove it. The engine is the best OEM audio equipment - radio is for passengers.
Sonderwerks worked on my 2005 911 Carrera in March 2021. A great shop. Smart people. They say what they mean and do what they say. I had the IMS issue resolved and a new clutch and flywheel installed. Dave runs a great shop and like Will said, I received a lot of hospitality and the grand tour when I was there. Cheers from Round Rock.
There's something about the rear end of this model that doesn't turn me on. Add the leaky oil that it is plagued with I'm not sure why it is the hottest air cool right now.
Totally agree. The front is certainly classic but that rear is just not for me. The 993 and pre-964 of rear ends are leagues better in my mind. Not a problem for the 964 to have its day though, keeps the others a little bit more under the radar.
911 SC, but prices are rising. You could look into the mid-year cars (1974 - 1976 or so) as they are reported to be undervalued. I’m active in the market and good cars are hard to find in general.
I had a 92 964 my first new porsche. I have had 4 911's and a 924 and a 924 turbo and a Boxster. The 964 was the most costly to maintain ( drove it 125000 miles. My other 911's I drove 170K miles or more each. They had torsion bars and they are far better. The 964 had way more road noise from the rear wheels and wore out tires rapidly. Any pre 1990 Porsche is a better car.
