2.7 Cayman model is a hidden gem. You can rev it more often. Hear the sound. And it’s more reliable: no bore score, no transmission cable snap better fuel economy. And it still looks better than the 911. Future classic.
I dont think the bore score is a super common thing either way i think its as common as the ims bearing which affects like 2% of cars so either way congrats!
Satch, Shane here from Australia. I own a 987 s and part from the missus, it’s what I love! I had a health scare some years ago, and wanting to realize a dream, I bought an affordable Porsche. Agreed. I bought mine here in Aus Mid last year and it is by far the best fun car I have ever owned. It has a badly leaking water pump at the moment and I havent been able to drive it for a month as a result (waiting to get it moved to where I'll get it serviced). Just an awesome daily.
I LOVE driving my 06 Cayman S!! Has all the upgrades. Track day was ridiculously FUN!!! Getting out on drives has been the best medicine for me during these crazy times.

Totally right about the therapeutic qualities of the drive. I actually love driving to work when it's a self-imposed Cayman S day. Me and those crazy contractors railing the left lane (US highways) as the sun pops. Awesome!!
Pretty much agree with all of this. I hope to get out in mine today. Love the idea of getting up at 5am when nobody on the roads to give it a good thrash.
Hi from Australia, Ive owned a well sorted 06 987 s for 3 years now and it been fantastic. Has the following modifications : Gt3 Throttle body and Plenum, Air intake, Porsche motorsport Oil/air separator, NHP long tube hatless headers, carnewal exhaust, extended sump and baffling, Third centre front radiator, limited slip diff, H&R lowered springs, full tune to suit mods 50+ hp increase. Really would recommend these mods, the car runs excellent.
There's no way a 'good example' of a 987 is going for that cheap in the States. They're still up around $20K+ for a base model. They're probably so cheap in the UK because they were built to drive on the wrong side of the road! ;) Cheers for the video - always appreciated.
@@eddybooth1 You will love it. Mine did an alternator overrun bearing and water pump new years eve. Only got it back on the road this week. Worst three months of my life :D I've had it about 8 months now and even with all the covid lockdowns we had here in Aus, i managed to put 10,000km on it in the first 5 months. I live regional and it too so long to fix as getting it to a specialist was going to cost me $1100 just to put it in a truck. Took a while to find soemthing cheaper as an option. Do the AOS if it is still original and you should be good to go.

Love your enthusiasm for the non-911 Porsche. My budget couldn't stretch to that dream 911 of the right spec and I had to go with my 981 CS. Having owned the car for a while now it might of been the cheaper option to getting into Porsche ownership but I don't think I am missing out at all. Luggage space is better, handling is better and I think it's the most beautiful proportioned car out there. I have never wished for more than its 300bhp on the road as it's accessible power that you can get to stretch the cars abilities without overstepping my own and feel like I'm getting the best from both. It's 50% cheaper than the equivalent 911 and I'm sure more than 90% of the ownership experience. 911s are overpriced compare to their sibling.
Steve Cade agree. In reality, on our roads there is no need for more than 300, you could even say the same for 250. If the 911 is 50% more expensive, you have to ask would you get 50% more enjoyment/fun out of it, the answer for me would be no.
@@Spazza42 I am not convinced there is that 10% to be gained in a 911. Having never owned one (drove a C4S at Silverstone Porsche Experience though) I can't say for sure. Maybe one day when my numbers come up. Until then my CS really scratches my Porsche itch.
I had a deposit on a 911 at the Porsche dealer and ask to take a Boxer for a drive….I bought the Boxer S. I can afford the 911, but the Boxer is more fun and certainly a better convertible than a 911 convertible. Agree the engine has better access than a 911.
Acquired my Boxster S 987 last October, and love getting out on the road with it. Today I'll be installing new smoked tail lights, and then taking it out for a spin into the mountains. Unfortunately I have yet to experience a PCA meetup here in the US, since I missed last season and this year has been on hold for the obvious reason. Hopefully in a month or two things will return to normal and I will get a chance to meet my fellow Porsche owners at a club gathering.
Ya, you hit the nail on the head - driving the Cayman is really therapy for the Coronavirus. You, the car and the road - that"s all you need to say that life is good, that life is enjoyable. I have one just like yours in cobalt blue with the same front spoiler. It's like a gift from God, a simple gorgeous car!

Porsche Network - I've been tracking my '08 CS for about 3 years - I try and do 5-6 days a year with the PCA. The conventional wisdom around here is that if you're just starting out tracking - these cars do not need anything. The oil starvation issue is real, but a deep sump generally isn't needed until you move to stickier rubber. At our track no Caymans (that I know of) have the motorsports AOS.
I traded my 2011 Cayman S in for a 2012 991.1. No regrets in the trade, but sometimes I do miss my Cayman. The feeling of being connected to the road is incredible. I wish I could have both!
I've done track days in my base model Porsche the VW GTI. I have been a passenger of a Porsche Cayman on track and it was real fun, balanced. I'm trying to learn more about porsches. In the early 90's I had a 924s. I will say at the track events I been to you will find plenty of Porsches.

Nice to see (and hear!) it out on the road again Satch. My warning light was cured by new plugs and replacing shot coil packs (NOT the Cats as hinted at by a dealer).

Yes, I’ve been known to take my Boxster to the track. 😜 Excellent way to get your yayas out! Although, as you know Satch, I’m way down that slippery slope concerning the mods, I think it’s important to note that for your first track season the stock 986 or 987 is perfectly capable without modification. I think that the first mod that I did was an underdrive pulley which I installed to relieve the strain on my power steering pump and other peripherals! This will be my 6th year of tracking if it ever gets off the ground!
I’m using the RSS underdrive pulley. It’s well made although it’s a little more expensive than some others. You do need to do some minor surgery on the m96 engine to install it: there’s a little nubbins on the engine case that needs to be cut down to allow for the lip of the smaller pulley. Important not to cut too far, otherwise you won’t be able to pin your engine at TDC if you need to. Note that you would have to swap back to the original pulley to do that anyway. You also need a slightly shorter serpentine belt with the smaller pulley.

Your Cayman is ace Satch but who needs 300bhp 200 is plenty in my scabby base 986 with standard exhaust still lots of fun and I would be happy with a base 987 if funds would allow

Just want to confirm about the MOT status of this car. The car MOT has expired, however I misinterpreted the rules for MOT’s at the minute. I was under the impression that my MOT had been extended for 6 months but that is incorrect. I will be booking the car in for it’s annual test this week. 👌

Anyone looking at buying a Porsche Cayman or boxer, make sure you watch Scotty Kilmer's RU-vid channel first. Porsches are owned by VW. They cost a fortune to repair!
I've always been skeptical about the 911 rear engine & crash stories etc. I figure the cayman is the answer. But the lower power it needs to be a gt4, or a turbo kit, or 911 turbo swap & you'd have a real basket case
One odd thing to look out for is Road Tax (VED). If you can buy one of the very first Cayman 'S's at the end of 2005 (not such a daft thing to do if they become classic - the first production run of any classic car is always collectible, look at very early '901' 911s) the VED is currently £360 pa. After March 2006, just 6 months after the first cars were sold, the VED goes up to £585 for an identical car - and stays there until the Gen2 cars which come back down as the exhausts are cleaner. That's £225 saving per year.
The Cayman is a great car to drive and there are some great deals out there for 1st generation, but (and probably stating the obvious), they are expensive to keep on the road, and 10 year+ old models will have work that will need to be undertaken. So any would be buyer should factor that into the purchase price. Plugs, coils, timing belt, Major or Minor Service, Brake Pads/Discs will rack up very quickly, not to mention dreaded crossover pipe leakage (known issue on older models)! So make sure you check to see when these were done by a reputable garage before purchase. If they haven't, then you should factor in an extra couple of grand in the first 12 months of ownership. Just the cost of owning a genuine sportscar that is over a decade old.
10:15 Brands Hatch 👍🏽 did 2 track school events at Brands while I was living in the UK, Formula Ford and my 916 Ducati tho not with a Boxsrer/Cayman. Back in South Africa now and there's a 2009 987.2 Boxster 2.9 PDK for sale down the road from me with 87 000km full service history for the equivalent of £12 000 (local Porsche dealership is walking distance from my house)... it's really flirting with me 😍 Responsible me says I should be looking at an Isuzu double cab pick-up, but responsible me also didn't buy all the sports bikes in my garage so... LOL Interesting factoid: Porsche South Africa now owns the Kyalami GP circuit 👌🏽🇿🇦
I could not find any Cayman under EUR 12.5K in a number of countries within Europe. I used Autoscout24. Maybe I has something to do with the RHD version being cheaper.
I agree. Here in the Netherlands you cannot find any cayman for under 20.000 euro's. Maybe one with a very high mileage.Also import from Germany isn't possible for these prices. Also the blue ones are very rare to find
Also @Porsche Network, could you do a video on using the diagnostic tool? A really dumb down version of it? I am not technically minded in the slightest but it would be excellent if you can do a simple user guide video... Maybe use the example of the engine fault in your video to see what needs to be replaced or fixed? I think this would potentially save me lots of money in the future if I know what is wrong with the car before I take it to the garage!!
Purchased a Boxster S (981) new. Has 6K miles on it and the PADM has gone south. Appears to be a major weakness on any of the cars equipped with this option. Both 911 and Boxsters. $$$$

Heard a rumour on another channel that Porsche could be giving the Cayman 987 classic status in the next couple of years then the prices of the cars and the parts usually rise. I'm looking at a 2.9 gen 2 model at the moment but deciding between a 90k miles cayman or 45k miles boxster near enough the same price 2010 models.
Anthony Hodgson I hadn’t heard that Anthony. All really depends on your preferences. I mostly prefer a rigid roof to a convertible, so I’d go for the cayman and 90k wouldn’t put me off. As I say though all about what is right for you. Good luck with buying.
How can you put Cayman in the same sentence with Mazda Miata, Honda S2000, Audi TT??? Cayman is at least 1 class above in every possible way. I'm the first owner of Cayman S (2007) and I also remember the huge price difference between Porsche and the cars mentioned above... P.S. Can't believe that low prices for used Caymans in UK. In Croatia you need to spend above 30000 € for a model in good condition.

Jess H hmmm I’m not sure, perhaps you can speak to carnewal as I’m not sure if they ship out to USA. I know soul performance do exhausts in the USA so might also be worth speaking to those guys.
You mentioned the shifter cable snapping. Have you replaced yours? I got a cayman 987.1 and have 58k on the clock, so I am assuming if was to go it would of gone by now. - what di you think? However only recently brought the car, and gear changed are absolutely fine once car is warmed up. I thought I’d wait for it to snap if it even happens as I only expect to keep the car for a few years and then trade up to a 981 cayman, we’ll that’s the plan.
When mine went - it went completely out of the blue. It's a coin toss in my humble opinion on whether you change it in advance or wait for it to fail (if indeed it does). Just dug out the paperwork and hate to tell you mine went at 59,763 miles. It is of course inconvenient if it fails on a trip. You need to get the car recovered to a repair place and then expect to be without the car for up to a week. On the other hand if you elected to do it proactively, you can plan the work. Porsche slightly re-engineered the design so the cable doesn't have as tight a radius as was the case originally. You might also want to consider if you modify the gear lever..... I never looked into that as I just wanted mine fixed & the car back ASAP. You have to buy a new lever (as the old one doesn't fit the new system (£193 excluding VAT) which is included in the total cost below. It is a simple fix and I had it done by a small general garage a few miles from where mine failed. It was a total of £808 (which included the lever & VAT). I have a Gen 2 Cayman S and considering the trade up cost, I'm not convinced it's good "bang for bucks" getting a newer car.... I also keep dreaming .... 96% of the pleasure without taking the financial hit but of course there are always the 4.0 GTS or GT4 or a model with a limited split differential.

I can't tell if its the camera angle or not but your seat seems set a little higher than I'd expect for the type of car. I'm looking at Caymans just now and love a low driving position, wheel in close and legs straight out but judging by the video it doesn't seem to have the position I was hoping for. Is your seat just set higher than the lowest setting and how low can it go?
Hi Satch hope you're well. Same thing happened to me last week while out for a drive, the dreaded Engine Check Light came on. Used my icarsoft Por2 to read codes and I got P0421 and P0431 Warm up Catalyst Efficiency below threshold bank 1+2. Have ordered new o2 Sensors and new Coil Packs so hopefully that will sort it out, fingers crossed. What was the fault in yours by the way? Mick 👍🍻
My 2010 S Box has paddles and adaptive light sports chrono and is a blast I would say best bet is 09-10 s ! My only must have is adding a cushion for my bum as they ride stiff If audio phile upgrade cheap speakers to better I spent pennies on focal parts and went from crap bose to nice nice using the bose amps wiring and deleating replacing components Good luck
