Mark. Your videos of your Cayman are spot on. As you said on another video concerning the base model, one word encapsulates the 987 Porsche Cayman; "sublime". I owned one very similar to yours for 3 years. Selling it was the sorriest day of my automotive life. I have had many great sports cars in my 60 years. Many of them far more powerful and expensive. Not one of them compares to the Cayman base model. They are made to be driven and if anything, over engineered. There are no negatives. Issues are minor, and looking after one is actually a joy. When I parked it, I always looked back at it as I was walking away. I always had a smile driving it, and it never let me down. I would never dream of owning a newer model and the 987s are the last of the great accessible Porsches. My advice to all who view this channel is to find a good one that was loved and driven. Pour over the service records, and if you need peace of mind of having it professionally evaluated, then by all means do so. You find a good one, just pull the trigger and take it home. You will never, ever regret it.
Bought myself a 2008 base cayman a couple of weeks ago. 2 owners, full history with 13k miles on the clock. Absolutely love driving it!! Thanks for the vids, Mark 👍🏻👍🏻
@@popeye9048 🤣🤣🤣 go on boy. Great thing is. At this price they can just be used. Probably not gonna go up in value bc it’s not a 911 but really who cares?
Gen 1 Cayman's are destined to to be future classics. At 4400 rpm's in 2nd gear, the car begins to sing. It's said that 85% of Porsche owners, will never experience what the car is capable of.
Absolutely loved this video. I’m just looking to get the same car and this video sealed it. May even goto mortimers :) great to hear the real world costs and detail. Thanks so much!
Hey Mark, very comprehensive buyers guide. May I ask if 987 cayman stiff and rigid steering while in stationary? Only when it drives, I can then feel the “rigid” steering release. Is 987 supposedly to be like that?
Hats off to the editor/film/production crew for putting together another brilliant video! I consulted a well known specialist in the States before purchasing mine and they stated they have yet to see an IMS failure or bore scoring issue on the BASE 987 Cayman. Apparently the internal bits and pieces of the base motor differ from the “S” variant.
Hi Mark, great video and very informative. Just looking into buying my first porsche and considering a cayman 2.9 gen 2. What are your thoughts of the 2.9 compared to the 2.7 and do you know if the 2.9 is more prone to the bore scoring & IMS bearing issues? Thanks in advance Phil
Just bought a 30k miles 2007 2.7, running on 18's, valved sports exhaust & sports filter fitted. The sound is blood curdling, the handling awesome. I tried the S, the base is just as quick if worked hard & it loves being pushed. 240 bhp is plenty on the Welsh mountain passes where I live. I've owned 3 911's, this is so much more fun.
@@MarkCup70 Your videos are spot on, I lived near Horsham up until October last year so I know all the roads well. The valved exhaust was only £800 + VAT + fitting. It was done by Spyder Performance/Eporsch in Bisley, my mate Roly owns the company, I'm sure he would give you a discount if you did a video on it. Roly has measured over a 20bhp gain if fitted with the sports filter, it really does make a big difference & no droning with the valves closed even on my 5 speeder. Worth every penny.
I have driven a 997s,1976 2.7, 944s2,968,928,924,boxster 986 and I own a 987 at the moment they are incredible cars for the money! Basically 80 percent of a 911 for a fraction of the price!
Hi Mark, I bought a 2007 Cayman 2.7 and I agree 100% with all your comments. However, what do you know about the 6305 non serviceable IMS? Should I be relaxed if the maintenance has been done strictly? No issues if I track it? Now mine is 150.000 kms = 93200 miles.
Just picked up my 2005 Cayman S w/ 49k kms. Options include Sports Plus seats, sports Cronos, PASM, NAVI and Sports steering wheel. It’s so rare to find one fully loaded and was owned by an enthusiast who kept the car clean in a garage w/ records. Flat 6 purrs like a kitten. $37k cdn was more than some with 130k kms for $30k cdn. But well worth the premium price.
Very helpful and insightful! Greatly appreciate your video. Thank you for being always so generous with your time and willing to share knowledge and information. 👍🏻
Good video and review. I was going to buy one from Mortimer's too but ended up buying privately. It'll be serviced by Mortimer's though. Noted you use Tom at TLB too, ditto 👍
Just discovered your channel and have to say these are some of the most informative and well balanced porsche reviews I have seen. You do great work, thanks for taking the time. You are really solidifying my decision to seek out a Cayman instead of the 911.
Open question to all. What's the 987 like over your standard speed bumps? Unfortunately where I live there are a few speed bumps, one being fairly nasty with a drop before the bump.
First off, I've been watching your videos for a few months now, originally while I was researching the 987 Cayman, and now as a new owner of a 2008 2.7L Cayman - partially because of your endorsement. Can you direct me to a source for the "Press Release" section from this video? I did pause the video to read all of it, but I'd love to find a way to download this for my records in the official Porsche font and such as it appears in the slides in your video. I'm loving my Cayman so far. A very fun and well engineered car! Keep up the good work!
Decided to sell my lotus to look for either a Cayman or Boxster. Will probably end up in a 987.2 2.9. Prefer roof off motoring but the shape of the Cayman is nicer. Decisions, Decisions!
Very informative video. I follow another owner who has a 987 Cayman and he noticed smoke on startup and excessive oil consumption which turns out he had bore scoring. No noisy tapping from the engine and the smoke / oil was the only signs of the problem. Anyway, I am looking to buy either a boxter or cayman at some point in the near future and this has been really helpful. I've never been a fan of convertible cars hence the reason I'm leaning more towards a cayman. Do you prefer your cayman to the Focus & M140i? I've followed your channel since you had the Focus RS and I like the thoroughness of your information.
I just bought a 987.1 2007 base manual Cayman with 36,000 miles. It complements my tuned 991.2 PDK cab (with almost 500 crank hp). I had a 987.1 base manual Boxster that I owned for almost 10 years that loved but I traded in for the 911 in 2019. I love the 911 but missed the naturally aspirated manual hydraulic steering car. So now I have one! I really believe that the 987s are one the last truly analog Porsches. I think the values of well maintained ones will go up over the next 10+ years though I’m driving mine and it isn’t meant to be an investment.
Question? I'm looking to buy a 2.7 2007 car the miles are at 124k. Has service history so anything at all you would highlight on car with said miles ? Thanks.
Thank you for this video Mark. I recently subscribed after finding all sorts of information about the car I plan to import from Japan. Quite certain now that it will be a 2.7 ! You’re really clear and honest about the life with this car and it’s a great service that you’re doing to us future buyers. Had friends that converted their boxster 987 to E85 (ethanol) did you had any informations about that ? Thanks Mark. Cheers. Marc.
@@MarkCup70 don’t worry ! It’s quite common on 986 in France because of the low price and enhanced performance that it brings. (+10hp in general). So it’s often done on 987 too. Cheers
Oh no!! I thought the key battery needed changing as after a few days I could not use the remote and so changed key battery which caused even more problems and now still had the same issue but you just stated the car is on sleep so just open the door handle and so I’ll try that next time. Quirks of the car I guess
I just came across your channel and really enjoy it! So refreshing and informative!! I own a 05 997 but really wish i had bought a Cayman! I love how you are really getting out and enjoying the car as it sets! Not modifying the hell out of it! Not that thier is anything wrong with that but these cars are brilliant as they sit from the Factory!. When i got my 997 I was like man i am going to do this and that And honestly I was blown away on how good it is as abase 997c2! You just confirm that!! Especially with the base Cayman!! Itls ike most folks run to the S,GTS.GT4 Etc.. when in reality most are to much for public roads to enjoy..
Hi Mark, thanks for your all help. I would have bought one but realised I need to wait until I can afford to run it properly. So thank you. Also the PPI . You said what happens if you buy from a specialist but what if you don’t? Who does them and what to have checked ? Thanks 😊
It's a Pioneer SPH-DA160DAB, Android Auto only (I think they do an Apple Carplay version) and cable connection only...I have the USB lead routed into my glovebox which is where my phone stays.
Hi Mark - ive been considering a Cayman, currently have an M140i (as I know you also had one previously). How do you find the Cayman in comparison to the M140i?
They're kind of incomparable Rob. The 140 is a very fast 1-series with a ton of power and some blue brakes, the Cayman is a sports car designed to be great to drive from the outset. If you need back seats, not much beats the 140 in my opinion. If I did, I would have another. If you don't, for what they cost to buy and run, not much beats the Cayman.
@@MarkCup70 Thank you Mark I do imagine the Porsche is obviously more driver focussed - will definitely consider for my next car, Im sure a test drive will convince me! Thanks for the info 👍
Sort of. The 3.4 litre S can suffer from IMS failure or bore scoring, it's way overplayed on the internet though and not very common at all. The non-S 2.7 litre version doesn't suffer the same way though, IMS failure and bore scoring are as good as unheard of.
