A quick buyer's guide and road test of Porsche's 991. In naturally aspirated form perhaps the last link to the old 911's before the turbocharged versions came out. I chat about the various versions and options plus some general information on this model 911

Don’t own without warranty, I bought a 991.2 from Porsche. Since owning had new air con, new rear coil springs ,water pump, air oil separator, new turbo’s ( famous smoking exhaust) plus oil supply lines to turbos. All fixed under Porsche warranty. The turbos and water pump are known failures and I have seen quite a few posts about them. Porsche have been fantastic and sorted the car . I don’t want to think what all that cost- 2 weeks labour ie 80 hours is over 10 grand alone plus parts😮

Sorry, a car with driver aides is not a real drivers car. The last real 911 was the 996 gt2 and a car that needed a good driver to perform. A car that has traction control isn't a real 911.

Great video, but the PCCBs are actually incredible on the street. Half the weight of traditional brakes, and the rotors will outlast the car- unless you're at the track regularly, and fast. Then you will chew through them every 10-12 track days, at a cost of about $25,000/set.

Anyone is free to believe or not believe whatever they like, but stating it like that is really poor form, and says more about the person saying it than the OP. FWIW I am on a few Facebook owner's groups with my 996, and the posts cover the full range from the very reserved to people who sound like caricatures. I think just about the only thing you can say for sure about Porsche owners is that you can't say anything for sure :)

@@thejupiter2LoL - Just because I drive a 991 doesn't mean I have to hide my enthusiasm or speak like a boring old fart. Mine is not a dull silver, black or grey 'Surrey Set' Porsche - its a Guards Red 991.1, bedecked with Aerokit Cup spoilers, 20" wheels - and I bloody love it. Every journey is an adventure. And nothing sounds like a NA Porsche flat 6 at full chat :) - it sounds 'beast' - I know this because my 18 year old son told me.

Great review Jack. BUT…. I think Porsche felt to a trap made by progress. Back when “normal” cars were slow, cumbersome vehicles, sports cars like the 911 (or 944) with around 200-250 HP made sense and with that level of power still had performances capable of exploitation within the human and normal road conditions. Now that you can purchase (say) a hot hatch with that power level and great handling Porsche, to be different, has to offer cars like this with outrageous performance, and huge complexity, completely losing touch with the realm of human capabilities and daily road conditions. I must confess that this type of vehicle lost the appeal to me. I long for a small, simple, compact, reliable(!) Porsche with 200-250 HP. Cheers

For the record the infamous IMS engine problems were rife in the 996 and 997.1 (and corresponding Boxsters and Caymans of the era) but was totally eradicated with the 997.2 which was effectively reengined. And with minor upgrades the same 997.2 engine’s to be found in the 991.1.
@riccapucho
@riccapucho 5 лет назад
Sam Casamassa okaaaaay.... my fault for underestimating the vitriol of the RU-vid comments section. Carry on...
@riccapucho
@riccapucho 5 лет назад
Sam Casamassa We’re cool, mate. A mate of mine here in Switzerland had his IMS let go on his 2000 Boxster wot he bought from new. He wagged his finger at me, a year or two later, so I passed on the 997.1 I had my eye on at the time. I’m now 6 years into Carreras and well aware that there’s a good IMS engine prevention engine fix available, and anyway a lot of pain can be avoided with a bit of due diligence up front. Soooo, I concede there’s a lot of emotion about on the topic, lots of hearsay, lots of naysayers and lots of ayesayers. My point wasn’t aimed to open up that old sore ‘cos most IMS-prone engines let go years ago, or had the IMS mod well before. And here in Zürich we’re up to our necks in 996s, 997.1s and any number of old shape Boxsters and Caymans. And I don’t see them at every street corner with steam coming out of their engine bays. So hopefully we can loudly agree that all 997s sound crap, all 996s are underrated because of that pair of headlights, 991.1s sound fabulous but have lost some of the charm, and 991.2 are satan’s breath and sound crap because of them turbos. If we agree on all lf that, then we should take the rest of the week off and binge watch RU-vid. Ric
@user-oj7en8xx3g
@user-oj7en8xx3g 5 лет назад
True comment, the IMS bearing only existed in the problematic form from 996.1 through 996.2 to the 997.1. Note that both 996.1 and 997.1 have quite a low rate of failure, it was really only the 996.2 (facelift) which reached higher levels of failure, and even then, by now many of them have simply been replaced. I have read failure rates of 1%, 5%, 1%, but facts are hard to come by here. The basic recommendation is to replace it when you do the clutch, since the engine is open at the right place then. The 997.1 requires an engine split though. It isn't all that expensive to have done, and you can even go for a permanent fix, at a somewhat higher price. If you accept this, you will likely never have problems with it. The trouble is with the people who ignore it, out of ignorance or stubbornness. It really is a part which needs periodic replacement. I would not use that to recommend avoiding these cars though. Simply factor it into the cost equation and make your decision that way. The 996 is a fantastic car, smaller and lighter than the 997, and more analog as well. Fully worth owning, even if you have to replace the IMSB once in a while to be safe.

How can it be the last real 911. The last real 911 was the 996, as it had no driver aides or onboard computer and the GT2 still used the mezger engine from the les mans gt1 from 98. The last real 911 was the widow maker, 996 GT2.

I find all 911s before the 991 (i.e. up to the 997 incl.) too smallish, and all 911 after the 991 (i.e. as of the 992) too pretentious and alienated from what a 911 is supposed to be. To me, the 992s are no real Porsches anymore, they just have become too much of everything. So, for me, the best 911 is the 991. The 991 is incredibly beautiful - not overdone and timeless.
