Day 2 of testing the Manthey set up. This is the last full lap I manged to do with the car. Afterwards things didn't go quite as well.
Anyways, this footage is from 2022, in the meantime many things have changed, including finding and working on a new project.
Still, before returning to the ring with the new project, I wanted to share the last happy moments with this car.

Your GT3 sounds so good! 996 C2 owner striving for a gt3 💪

The Mezger soundtrack is indeed quite intoxicating. The new car features a full Cargraphic R system, which now spreads the love also to those outside :D

HI, nice lap. I think the set-up works well. Greetings Sven

Thanks, the Manthey geometry was a step foward (I run it also on the new car), but it didn't solve the odd oversteer issues I encountered several times with the car, which could have been caused by excessive bump steer (experiencing it in Kesselchen in the fast left corner is not that fun). To counter this I wanted them to install adjustable toe links which give you control over the toe-curve. But because they were not familiar with the Demonspeed toe links I got, they didn't fit them. At the end of the day the most important part would have been to solve the issue, and they could have just fitted the 997 cup toe links instead, but no such effort was made. Now, the new car handels differently (better) even without other toe links, which might indicate that there were other things going on as well but that nobody was able to properly diagnose...

@@DenfMotorsports Was the setup only done once or tried out several settings?

@@GT4-CS They said that there aren't really different setups, and that the only thing that usually changes is the ride height. For GP track lower than for the Nordschleife. To be fair, the geometry seemed to work quite well (I am still using the same specs as in the old car). Of course it would have been better if the underlying oversteer/bumpsteer issue (which span across different setups) would have been adressed, since I specifically asked for that and also brought up a solution (which they dismissed without providing an alternative). What also would have been nice is a correctly filled out spec sheet (the position of the rear anti roll bar was different to what it stated on paper..but these are details). Probably between 21-24 september I'll be at the Nürburgring with the "new" car.. BTW: you are Sven from the M-forum? I seem to recognise the profile picture..

@@DenfMotorsports Oh that's a shame. They are usually very helpful and accommodating to requests. I had a KW Clubsport - 2 WAY in my M3. The first setting wasn't 100 percent either and we had made the compression stage 1 click softer at the front and rear and the rebound stage 1 click harder at the front and rear. The altitude stayed and then it was perfect for me. Maybe you try that. Yes, I'm also registered in the M-Forum as M3_Sven. Are you there too?

@@GT4-CS They did make some changes to the damper settings, which made the car a little bit more compliant. But now on the new car I changed the springrates and I now have a proper dual spring set up (with tenders, rather than helpers) and the result is very impressive. I am looking forward to trying the new suspension setup on the Nordschleife in september. The first tests I did in Mugello and Tazio Nuvolari were quite promissing. M-Forum yes, since 2011 I think (Denf!)... I had an E46 M3 for about 8 years (what a great car that was). I did quite some trackdays with that car as well, it is featured in a couple of videos on my channel.

Before selling the car I test drove another 996 GT3, and was quite surprised at how different it behaved. I managed to sell this car quite well and since I am very stubborn... I bought another 996.2 GT3 ahah but this time a Clubsport version. I salvaged the Nitron suspension from this car but decided to significally change the springrates. I talked a lot with a Nitron engineer and based on my input and experience with the previous car, we decided to try a custom solution. The new car feels now very different and I am looking forward to bringing it to the ring. The first tests I did (on more forgiving tracks) look very promissing! :)

I found a 996.1 gt3 cup car in Japan. Lot cheaper than a gt3. Thinking to convert to a street car…
@DenfMotorsports
@DenfMotorsports 11 месяцев назад
@@WKBaker4 I see why this could seem appealing, but be aware of all the differences that there are between a GT3 cup car and a street car. The biggest difference being the engine, which in case of the cup car does not come with Variocam. This means that driving around in normal traffic is going to be a headache, since the car doens't really want to do it in the first place.

@@DenfMotorsports right, not a practical street car at all. Luckily out of my driveway is some of the nicest driving road in Japan and some nearby tracks. Of course the gt3 street car would still be ideal! I’ve rebuilt a air-cooled engine with my dad (videos on my channel) and was surprised to learn that the case halves are basically the same from early 911s to the 996. The 996 gt3 engine is such an awesome design.

@@WKBaker4 Having amazing roads and racetracks just out of the drive way obviously helps! There are a couple of people (UK/USA) who converted the Cup car also for "street" use, so it is definitely doable. I was just trying to cation you not to underestimate the implications. The 996 GT3, GT2 and turbo are built on the Mezger block, which is very different from the, at the time, newly designed Carrera engine. The Mezger block itself still has a 964 part stamp iirc. Anyways I wish you good luck in finding a suitable project car!
