It's Porsche 996 #IMS and #RMS inspection time. What will we find? Will we need to replace the RMS and/or the IMS? If so, this could add several THOUSAND dollars to our build budget.
In this video we continue from where we left off in the previous video where we removed the transmission from the 996. Here we need to remove the cracked bell housing from the transmission that's still attached to the engine. We also remove the clutch and fly-wheel to inspect the RMS and now infamous and dreaded IMS. Join us and check it out!
As ever, thanks so much for watching my videos and supporting my channel. Keep the comments and chat coming! More videos coming soon. Cheers!
#Project996
Stay tuned as I follow a dream to rebuild, restore and transform a Porsche 911.

Great job on the improved camera work (under the car) compared to the last video, but the German in me would DEFINITELY replace Clutch (of course I do NOT have to pay for it)...great job fellows, keep it up...

My day off , large coffee in bed and watching you guys enjoy yourselves. Such good editing / sound / camera work and as seeing is believing it’s fabulous to see the IMS and RMS solutions done. I’m loving this content as an ‘04 Boxster S driver this model would be about as far as I could stretch next car C4S my dream . I would buy a new clutch just for peace of mind as you dodged so many bullets and they’re not very expensive especially 1/3 rd shares . I’ve just watched a guy change the AOS on my car and it’s a pig to get at , is it easier on a 996 , and my water pump just sheered off so a new pump belt thermostat and coolant .you guys are cracking on in a good system getting the big jobs tackled first . As for your feet , everyone is avoiding a two hour big man crying video after a 10 mm spanner falls on you 😂. I’m teasing but safety first is good . Pat and Steve say for the love of god can we get a fan blowing across us at least or some a/c

Excellent synopsis of the process; I am enjoying this series. It's tempting to replace the clutch just because your in there and don't want to go back any time soon. But you must trust your SMEs.

Another well produced, informative and easy to watch video. Just a pointer for a potential source of your oil seep. The crank case pinch bolts are usually replaced/updated as they have been known to allow oil to penetrate passed them. The new bolts come pre thread sealed. From memory I think there are four. Two inside the housing, above and below the cranks seal carrier.

If the housing bolt(s) came loose causing the breakage then this is a fantastic example of the importance of factory spec torque values. I have to ask. Were you informed of this ailment prior to the purchase? Surely the seller was aware of it. Great vid. Now we are gettin into the meat and taters. Love it! Take good care guys.

Replacing the clutch will definitely encourage the next buyer to pay more and buy with confidence. Will also give you plenty of leeway to drive it hard over the next few years too

I am hoping that some of the engine mount replacement makes it to video? I hear it’s an easy DIY? The term “EASY DIY” is subjective to many factors as you well know. Thanks go out to Pat for his reply to my previous comment. The future looks very bright for that Ol’ Girl. Take good care boys!
@laurencegibbs3640
@laurencegibbs3640 4 года назад
I did try to leave this comment in your other vid but maybe you tube didn't like the slang i used for the transmission? Do you know others with your lift that have removed the gearbox ? The reason i ask is that it looks like your gearbox jack gets real close to the bar on your lift and that's with the bell housing out the way? Great vids , keep them coming.
@ItsPinecone_911

Glad to see that everything else was good. The flywheel has about 250 miles on it since it was installed and before transmission split. The IMS has about 750-1000 miles on it since it was done as well. 😁
@laurencegibbs3640
@laurencegibbs3640 4 года назад
So you didn't do both at the same time? So two different installers between ims and flywheel?
@Mack1364
@Mack1364 4 года назад
That flywheel looked a little rough. Are the teeth ground down at certain points or was I seeing things? I’m wondering if the case being cracked it created instability in the connection between the starter and flywheel before finally coming apart. It’ll never be easier or cheaper to replace it all of it now.
@ItsPinecone_911
@ItsPinecone_911 4 года назад
@@laurencegibbs3640 the flywheel was good when I had the IMS done. But when the starter went out and only kicked out half way it chewed up the flywheel and I had to replaced both.

Sorry for late question, but once you have the transmission out, how did you support the back of the engine? I want to do my IMS and leave engine in place. Thanks!

Good question!! We had a second transmission lift under the engine to hold it in place.
@ideabrickworks9043

@@AutoAmateur Based on the video, it would be nice to be able to raise and lower with the transmission out. Did you see a way to temporarily secure the engine?
@garydilbeck8882

I have never seen a housing break to that extent without some form of extreme trauma. Could worn out engine mounts cause such a thing? If so then I am definitely replacing them on my 06.

We definitely will be doing engine mounts. A little bit of research pointed to bad mounts as one potential cause.
