Your instructions were very helpful. It's the same for all 997s and 987s. Two things to add: 1. Use a 5mm Allen key. You have to fish around in the door sill hole until you catch the key on the bolt. You don’t have to unscrew it all the way, just enough to loosen it from the sill's tab (that you can't see). 2. After you disconnect the electrical plug, you'll see the 4 places (2 on each side of the frunk/trunk release mechanism) that you need to pry in order to pop out the mechanism from the door sill. There are 4 tiny plastic straps attached to the underside of the door sill. Slide a very small flat head screwdriver under each strap, and as you pry the strap away from the mechanism's double tab, and push out that corner of the mechanism. Repeat on the other 3 sides, making sure that none of the sides snaps back into place.
SO grateful for this, I would have never known how to do this. One additional tip though, to seperate switch from enclosure trim piece: if you have a tiny screwdriver as I do in an eyeglasses repair kit, insert it between what could be called the "lock blocks", straight down in. There are 8 of those little blocks total. You'll see them holding the switch in place, 4 per side. If you pull that small screwdriver outward it will pull the encasement away from block and the 4 corners will free up one corner at a time, new one snaps right in.It's actually a clever design once you see how it's intended. Thx again.
Thank you for your very useful video. To easily remove the switch from enclosure was to insert SIMULTANEOUSLY 4 flat small kitchen knives and it comes out like a breeze!
Thanks! I purchased the Amazon switch and it fits and works. Not sure why Porsche made it so difficult to get that old switch out. Very satisfying DIY repair.
Thanks soo much! Like another user down here, I found it on ebay for 21 bucks. Dealer quoted me 453. Even being as afraid to break something as anything I touch in this particular car, it took me 20 minutes to replace the whole thing. THANK YOU
Another tip for getting the switch out. It's actually a two-piece unit. Assuming you are planning on throwing out the old switch, the main electrical piece is held by clips at either end. They can be broken, as they are part of the other piece, the surround. Pull the electical part off, and then the rest is much easier to take out of the door base trim, as it is thinner. Just use a thin screwdriver.
Very informative -- just replaced the switch on my 2008 boxster. Worked well although very hard getting the switch out --took less than 45 minutes and probably saved me 300 bucks.
This video is much appreciated! That said, even with this video and additional Comment tips, getting the original switch out is a huge pain (and I had screwdrivers from an glasses/optical repair kit to use as wedges/levers). I literally had to break the old switch in two to get the trunk (back) side of the switch to release, this in a 987.2.
Excellent video! Thank you for showing how much effort it takes to get those plastic clips pulled a part two remove the switches. Very thorough thank you
great video, the garage that MOT'd (road worthiness test) my Boxster S, broke my switch! your video great to show how hard it is to get the little bits of plastic clips through things without damaging anything! take your time seems to be the order of the day,
Thank you so much for your videos..very helpful information.. Just a quick note...I followed your procedure but before I purchased a new switch I sprayed the unit with WD40 wiped it and reinstalled.. working fine now !! I Understand they get wet due to the position so close to the door..I know a replacement isn't big bucks but it's worth a try.. Thanks again for your video..👍
I have a 2007 Cayman S and I just replaced this part today, it's really easy. I didn't need an Allen wrench, but I did purchase some Porsche tooling to make it easy. Also, purchased the part on amazon for cheap...super easy install. I would recommend just getting a small hammer to punch out that part , that's what I did.
Awesome thanks. I just ordered my Amazon China replacement... it will be here 4/5. Looks like I'll need to be patient when trying to remove the actual switch from the main body. Thanks for the post!!!
Fantastic, thank you so much for this. The trunk switch was broken but still functioning. Now it's all like new. Thanks also to Bruce for the tip about removing it from the main trim.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!! Your video helped me save a bundle. I replaced the switch on my 2005 Boxster in under 20 minutes with a $25 compatible from Amazon. It was very straightforward.
Thanks so much for this really helpful instruction. I have just successfully fit a new part bought on line for £20 which so far works like a dream! BC's added tip below invaluable as to how to free the four corners of the switch using a tiny screw driver which also works well!
Sometimes when removing the old switch you may break it like I did. But it makes no difference as it is broken anyway. Just make sure that you don't damage the enclosure housing and you will be fine.
Just found this video-perfect! I just broke mine by pulling too hard when frunk didn’t release. I lost some sleep over it but feeling better now after watching your video. Is there a part number?
