If you're worried about leaf accumulation you might want to invest in some stainless steel grilles from ZunSport. My low mileage (29k) Gen 2 I recently purchased came with them fitted. They do the job and look good as well. Interesting what you said about tyres. I did an inspection at purchase stage and there was 4 -5 mm of tread all round but when I went to have the tracking checked post purchase, all of the tyres had cracking within the grooves so a new full set was required. Good idea when checking a car, identify the manufacture date on the tyres. Mine turned out to be 2012 on the front and 2015 on the rear!
@JoeTalksCars
@JoeTalksCars 3 года назад
Very good point! I have had cars In the past where tyres had cracked due to being old. I suppose it will be common on these due to low miles. Ooh I will look into those grills, heard good things about them. Expensive tho.

Hi! Thanks for the comment! Glad to hear you are looking at a Cayman. High miles doesn’t always spell bad luck, if it’s had a good service history and the main expensive items are done then you may be on to a winner. Thins that spring to mind with those miles, air con radiators, coolant crossover pipes, most suspension components (especially rubber parts) main thing is get someone with you to check it out. Scope the bores! Good luck! Keep me posted 😊

In terms of things that a buyer can actually look at / inspect themselves, probably the number one thing would be the coolant crossover pipes, visible in the front arches. If they haven't already been replaced, they'll be corroded, knackered and leaking on any 987 (and 997). Things like the aircon condensers are worth a look, but they won't cause knock-on damage. A leaking engine cooling system, on the other hand...
@JoeTalksCars
@JoeTalksCars 3 года назад
Very valid point!! This was actually on my notes to have as thing to check for but forgot to mention it! Mine have all been done as like you said they are probably leaking if they haven’t been changed. The list goes on with buyers guides. I’d still say service history is the thing to look for above all else, especially if it’s done at Porsche Center. Each service mine had done came with a huge check list that would in turn spot coolant pipes ect that are going to hurt further down the line. But coolant pipes is massively important on a pre purchase inspection. Cheers for you comments! Love getting feedback from other like minded people. Helps create better content in the long run 👍
@flat6croc
@flat6croc 3 года назад
@@JoeTalksCars Service history applies to any car, so it's not really helping someone looking for a 987 specifically. I personally wouldn't value OPC history over a good independent outfit. Thanks, Joe. Leaves clogging radiators are easily vacuum removed with a crevice tool -best done when the leaves are dry. May I suggest an initial puff of blue smoke on startup, clearing QUICKLY, is normal for the flat 6. One might also mention being aware of a long travel to clutch bite, and slipping in high gear (manual only?) from standing, is a quick test of clutch wear? Leaking front coolant pipes not uncommon...I’d better stop there..,!
@JoeTalksCars

Yeah the smoke is something to live with. Mine normally waits until people are watching then looks like it’s blown up! Didn’t even think about the clutch but yeah when I test drove a manual it was long travel. Coolant pipes can be evil or so I’ve heard. Thought mine were pouring out but it’s just getting warmer and the air con is on 🤣 cheers for the comment as always!

I’ve not long purchased an 06 Cayman S and whilst generally solid, an official Porsche Centre major service awaits, plus gearbox oil change and spark plug changes. With this being the Tiptronic I do think it’s worse. But I find it sits at 23mpg. Standard driving, reviving it out, sitting in traffic ect. I went up to Scotland in the first week of ownership. Bore scoring is not in 'very small numbers'. It's widespread. If you took a random sample of cars, you'd find at least a third have some evidence of scoring. Fortunately, it's not a binary failure mode and a bit of scoring doesn't mean imminent failure. But to say it's only very small numbers isn't remotely accurate. A significant number of cars have already been rebuilt or been scrapped, probably in the region of at least 10 percent. This doesn't make a gen 1 3.4 unbuyable, but it's essential to get the bores scoped pre purchase by an experienced outfit. It will cost about £200, but needs to be done if you want to know what you are buying into. Re the noise of a scored engine, it's more like a light tapping and it will be from the passenger side of the engine on a RHD car.
@JoeTalksCars
@JoeTalksCars 3 года назад
Mine thankfully was checked and free of scoring. It’s hard to know how many are affected as people don’t flood to the forums to say they haven’t had any symptoms.
@flat6croc
@flat6croc 3 года назад
@@JoeTalksCars It's difficult to get a really precise handle on the numbers. But the problem is inherent to the engine - combination of manufacturing issues with the Lokasil bore material, plastic piston coatings and then insufficient cooling to bank two. That people don't report engines that haven't failed isn't relevant. Talk to people who actually deal with these cars / engines regularly and it quickly becomes clear a large number have failed. Many had new blocks under warranty with Porsche, lots of cars have had cheap steel-liner fixes, others higher quality rebuilds of various types. All of the 3.4-3.8 M97 engines are very prone to scoring. It is not a rare event. Like I said, I'm not arguing that makes them unbuyable, but due diligence is required. it's not that complex. Get the bores inspected by an experienced outfit.
@JoeTalksCars
@JoeTalksCars 3 года назад
@@flat6croc 100% they need checking to be on the safe side. I was daft and got it checked after buying, acted with my head and not my heart 🤣 thankfully nothing there but as you said even if there was it’s not instant failure.
@Scenix19
@Scenix19 3 года назад
Completely agree with this as I am unfortunately one of the people with a cautionary tale! I found out about 7 months into owning my '05 911 997.1 Carrera S that it had bore scoring in all cylinders and ended up forking out £10k+ on an engine rebuild by Hartech (bought it in 2015 with about 75k on the clock). My advice for anyone looking to buy any Porsche of this era - pay for a Porsche specialist pre-purchase inspection and make sure they do a boroscope. I had a pre-purchase inspection on mine but it wasn't carried out by a specialist and they missed a couple of issues, most notable the bore-scoring. I think the only other advice I'd give to anyone looking to buy a Porsche of this age and era is to make sure you're prepared to pay for little niggly things here and there and expect to pay a little more than you would on most other cars. Go into it with yours eye open to the fact you're buying a premium car for a budget price, and expect to pay a more premium price when things go wrong (e.g. my electric windows failed and a new regulator fitting was £600+). That aside, I loved every second of owning my 911 and am now looking at getting Cayman S - although leaning slightly more towards the Gen2. Either way, I will definitely be paying for a Porsche specialist pre-purchase inspection!

@@Scenix19 wow that’s so unlucky:( such a shame that this plaques these cars. I would look for a gen 2 knowing what I know now. Just for piece of mind if anything. Yes and only time will tell if the newer generation is free from this problem... The latest gen we do not know yet, and the generstion before that shows signs of also having same problem but it happens later at more kilometers driven. But it seems sooner or later the bore score happens if your engine have run long enough. It also happens on Subaru and Toyota so it seems all boxer engines suffer from this more or less.
