The Caymans seem so easy to maintain that if you're even a bit mechanically inclined, you can do the minor/major services yourself. The benefits of the Cayman's engine is that if you pull off the carpeting behind the seats, you have access to the belt and pulleys, and on the other side underneath you can get to the spark plugs. Especially with how much the owner was swapping out wheels/tires, a lot of these costs can be mitigated with a couple hours of labor.
A good tip is not to drive LongLife service intervals on the oil. So that means changing the oil every 12 months, then after 24 months doing an interval service. Oil + filter is cheap, repairs are not.
Minor service for over £600, absolutely mental. I did an oil change on mine for a little over £100. I also did my discs with Brembo pads and discs for a few hundred. Indie Specialists are the way to go, Precision Porsche down near Brighton did my major for £750 and that was everything including changing the gearbox oil. In short, majors at Indies for the stamp, minor and brakes., do it yourself. OPC servicing isn't great, I have it on very good authority that the technician is given a bonus for turning it around in 2 hours. My full service took all day at Precision, they even refinished the wheel bolts and hubs. OPC doesn't even take the wheels off, hence the lower bleed nipples on the brake calipers on OPC maintained cars seize.
That is some fantastic insight. Yeah modern big companies are all about $$'s and turning the customers around quickly. I could believe that bonus on turnaround. I need to find a decent indie in the Surrey area which is my neighbourhood.
So that time has come when I need a 2 year minor service done on my Porsche Cayman 987.2. The first service which I am paying for! After looking into the indie garages around where I live, I kept finding negative experiences from past customers on the Internet. I’ve decided to opt for my local Porsche Dealer (which used to be an indie, before rebranding into the Porsche network). I know I will be paying extra (labour is where they sting you), but I am hoping to get everything checked and attended to without any bumps along the way. The car is 10 years old now, and I am opting to get the transmission fluid changed, every though Porsche says to do it at 12 years. If there was a decent indie near to where I live I would have opted for that. As things stands, I would have to take a day off work to visit one of the reputable indie garages. Porsche give me a loan car.
i suppose its the old story if you can do your own work & checks ownership becomes a lot easier to live with....i have just ordered for my 987.Drivebelt..spark plugs...new ignition coils...all fliters...oil....replacement brake fluid...brembo discs & pads all round for the princely sum of £500.A couple of days work...when the garage warms up a bit👍
this is why I would never go to a stealership for work. They are bigger crooks than shaddy private garages. Lie about work that doesn't need to be done and charge you like 200% more. Find a reputable garage and exclusively go there to develop loyalty. And go and get your own parts from wholesale sites online, with getting your own parts and going to a good garage you will reduce the amount you spend by minimum 50% compared to a stealership.
I giggled Max when you were not sure if the 265 tyres were for the front or rear !! The bills were very interesting, and those main dealership charges were shocking in some respects. Like £117 for 8 qts of oil ?? Maybe that incls the labour ?? I hope so.!! The Porsche battery is just nonsense, and just a way of taking cash from the customer. Would love to know how many other Mfrs insist on one to use their batteries, assuming they have them. Probably made by Bosch anyways. I can buy a premium Yuasa here for about E135, and that is in Halfords, which is not the cheapest.
Haha, like the comment about the 265 tyres. When I made this video, I decided not to plan any of it. I hadn’t even looked through the invoices in detail before. I figured it would be a more natural video, and not come across as totally scripted, if I just winged it! This is what happens when I’m trying to film myself and read stuff for the first time ;-)
LOL on that !! One other thing I forgot to mention was the shocking price of swapping out the summer wheels. Something like £400 ?? How is that possible ?? I must assume the charge includes a balancing and tracking charge ?? Cant imagine it would take more than an hour even including both those checks.
IF YOU ARE GOING TO SHOW THE PAPERWORK, AT LEAST KEEP THE CAMERA STEADY SO WE CAN FREEZE AND LOOK WITH YOU. SUCH AN AMATEUR, BOTH WITH LACK OF ATTENTION TO IMPORTANT DETAIL AND BASIC CAMERA WORK.
Good vid, but not sure I agree the minor service is about the same as the minor - the minor seemed to be about £600, and it wasn't clear how much the major was with the recovery etc, but it was part of the 3K bill, so I'm guessing about £1200? (main dealer)

I also owned BMWs and Alfas and Renault RS With Porsche the price of spare part carries Abit of a premium even on par series of parts on the other marquee mentioned
Rashard Dennis Good for you buddy. To clarify, when this video was made, I had owned my Cayman for 12 months. The stack of invoices was from previous owners who had used Porsche main dealers. I was simply sharing the pricing information as this was new to me at the time.

I know my Cayman is in very good condition... I initially wanted it checked over by a Porsche main dealer.
The real way to do it is *warranty for warranty years...* Then *3rd party mechanic like Scotty and have him tell you what a money pit it is...while you save big on repairs!*
The nice thing about Porsche is that the service is ever two years if you don't do alot of miles. Even if major or minor your paying that every two years :)
That's why it's expensive. You can get it serviced every year by a local specialist (recommended especially on the 987, to help prevent bore scoring) and it costs half as much.
Hi there. This is the first time anyone has asked me this question. I didn't initially reply as I didn't understand the relevance to my videos. However I will respond and say I work in IT as a developer. If you're really trying to understand how much earn, I can say in my 20-30's I was doing well, 30-40's still OK, then 40 onwards it has nose dived. Buying the Cayman was a retrospective reward for my 20-40's. I am working hard to improve my skills and hope to do better in later life. Never give up! If this response was too deep and involved for you, apologies. You probably wanted an easy answer like doctor, lawyer, accountant😃
