2008 with 78k and not a single issue. Love mines too. I Just keep fresh fluids in it, change brake pads and tires. Have a mechanic that knows what's up take a look through it now and again. I've been cruising every single day to work and across the island. 🙂

My 2008 Cayman S has been totally reliable mechanically speaking. That’s in 2 years of ownership, bought with 69k miles and now at 83k miles. The only issues I’ve had are the headliner and the hinge on the door pocket lid broke.

@@southeastsoftwash4020 congratulations. I haven’t really gotten my headliner fixed yet. It’s being held up by about 9 corkscrew style thumbtacks. I don’t really notice them and I don’t really notice the headliner sagging anymore so it’s not a real priority for me right now. Out of sight out of mind. But it seems like most auto upholstery shops can change the headliner for under $400.

Started out wanting an 06-08 then learned about the new engine and trans in the 987.2 then decided I’d rather have a 981 as it has a much stiffer unit body, is lighter and much better looking. A lot more money but worth it, as I plan to keep it. If you get a 987.1 don’t drive it like you stole it and be sure you research the VIN so you don’t get one with the IMS bearing issue. Incredible car.

These have gotten pretty expensive in 2022. Nice 987.1 examples in MT are reaching $30k+. Same car was 20k last year. Either these are getting popular and were previously overlooked or the supply shortage of new cars is making its way down to the 2 door sports coupe category.

Not to be "that guy", but this video's title is "Reliabilibty" - the video significantly more went through various compartments and value of the car. Almost nothing about reliability (wherein I read "reliability" as mechanical reliability in engine/gearbos/electronics, etc.). Bought my first 987.1S -08 in April 2019 and I've had some issues with it but mostly so related to trackuse. Very patient car considering I'm using it for every day usage and track-usage, likewise roadrip-usage. But it is important to know that with every Porsche, the purchasing-price is not what you should be bothered about. What you need to take into consideration is that the more you drive the car in terms of mileage and length of each trip (Porsche does not ike short trips where the engine starts/stops a lot and can't get up to a proper working temperature), the more tear and wear on the mechanics in the engine and gearbox. I bought mine for approx 27k USD (estimated based on exchange rate between currencies). I've driven it approx 50.000 km since I bought it in April of 2019. I've used it for every day commuting to/from work, roadtrips, trackdays, etc. And I've poured down approx 6500 USD further on maintenance, repairs and various upgrades. So keep in mind that if you plan to use your Porsche frequently, the running costs will be what you need to take into consideration. Not the purchase price - anyone can buy a sportscar on finance. The maintenance/running costs, especially when frequently used, is a whole other ballgame. :)

If you do not need to haul stuff or people, it is a really good daily. There are reservations obviously. If you live in Buffalo, NY, you would need to know about ground clearance issues clearing snow or whatever. But other than stuff like that it is a very livable car. I took mine to Costco the other day without a problem. I filled both trunks and had to break down the mass pack of TP, but everything worked fine and the wife was comfy. I would call my Boxster a daily. I do have other cars as needed though. I have three kids, so....

@johnmorgan7262
@johnmorgan7262 3 года назад
I generally love your stuff. But this video left me a little short - maybe for the first time. There was much that could have been said or said differently. The Boxster/Cayman is absolutely reliable if you stay up on the maintenance. In that statement, I would include IMS issues, RMS issues, AOS issues etc. But those are definitely issues and they MUST be considered. As you own the car, there are certainly reliability issues to consider. Water pumps? AOS? coolant tanks? Coolant lines? Certain electrics? With later cars, door panels? No single thing is critical - other than the IMS - but as an ongoing thing, underfunded owners might have a real issue. Further, I submit one should not compare the 911 to the Boxster/Cayman. They are very different cars. I would argue that the "S" is a better car than the ordinary 911. (GT's and Turbos are completely different). As a driver's car, I would take the Boxster every day and twice on Sunday over the 911. The driving experience of the midengine far exceeds that with the engine hanging out over the rear end IMHO. To live with day to day, I would say the same. Does the 911 have a back seat (kinda)? Well yes, but that means you are carrying your golf clubs (for instance) in the seat. In a Boxster you have a closed trunk and in the Cayman, there is a dedicated space. You are not parking the 911 on the street with stuff in it. I do with my Boxster every day. Is anyone ever going to sit in the 911 seats? Probably not. If we are talking adults, it would need to be some kind of emergency to even try. I have found the Boxster to be a perfectly livable car. The 911 adds almost nothing and diminishes useability. Basically, we are talking the distinction between a Sports car and a GT car. The 911 has a number of bells and whistles the Boxster does not. On paper, the engines are bigger and stronger. The 911 costs a ton more too. But in the end, I submit the biggest difference is image. If you are a ponce who needs everyone to know that - you need the 911. If you are the racing type, you need the bigger, badder, 911 variants. But if you really want to have a car that gives you the best driving experience and allows you to live in it - in a way the "supercars" do not permit, get the Boxster/Cayman.
@davidj4662
@davidj4662 3 года назад
That’s just your opinion. It’s a matter of personal preference and resources, and choosing one make or model over another is not a reason to denigrate somebody elses choice. I prefer my 911, having driven the others and that is just my preference and don’t think it makes me a ponce, whatever that is, but I’m assuming it’s an insult. Grow up.
@johnmorgan7262
@johnmorgan7262 3 года назад
@@davidj4662 I explicitly said it was an opinion. Further I suggest you read the sentence you referenced in context. "If you are a ponce who needs everyone to know that, then you need a 911." I did not denigrate anyone's choice. I denigrated the affected, pretentious buffoons (the definition of "ponce" by the way) who get the car solely for image. We all know there are plenty of those. I submit that anyone who DOES get a Porsche (any Porsche) solely for image is, in fact, a ponce. They are probably also insecure and self deluded - but that is another thing entirely. And to be clear, the comment was absolutely intended to be an insult to those who buy a car just to be seen and have no interest or understanding of what they are driving. In short, I stand by my statement. Please spare all of us from your condescension.
@designingcouture

Wow, John, maybe you should do videos! I’ve had my ‘07 Cayman S since driving it off the dealer’s lot, and have always wondered if I should’ve just opted for the 911. But, I keep asking myself, “Why?” The car has never given me any real trouble, other than water pump (twice), and headliner replacement. Plus, it’s been an absolute joy to drive for every one of it’s 153,356 miles! Maybe, I will just continue to be grateful for what I have! Thanks for your sharing your knowledge.

@bf5175
@bf5175 3 года назад
Also majorly overblown. Any 987.1 that is beyond 70k miles is not going to have an IMS failure. The bore scoring is slightly more common but nothing that can't be found in a pre-purchase inspection with a scope. For some reason people blow these two issues way out of proportion. My 2006 has 105k miles on it and has neither issue. Although I did have a shifter cable snap, the previous owner had put in a short shifter and that made it more likely to happen. I switched back to the factory unit with upgraded cables. But it is good advice to not buy any Porsche if you can't afford the maintenance.
