I think the first generation of it was more Porsche. With the history of the 935, 970, moby dick.. the noise, the flames.. it's missing something Here's a link to the earlier version ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kd8m48sXMYA.html
@@FriendlyCroock I missed out on the first time my father and brother went in 1996. They saw the F40, the McLaren, Viper, Venturi.. the first Porsche GT1.. pretty cool gt cars that year. I was there in 1997 though.. there weren't many prototypes that year. But did get to see the Ferrari sp 333.. and hear it. Wauv that was loud. Still have a poster from then, with a photo of the start. I would say that 1998 was one of the best times. Toyota, Nissan, Mercedes, BMW, Panoz.. very iconic cars that year Edit*- Not to forget the amount of iconic drivers, that participated.. some true legends
Aw God yes. Fantastic looking things. I used to collect model cars like 20 years ago and I had a 1/18 scale one of those. Had the clk gtr and mclaren f1 gtr aswell. They were my babies when I was a kid lol
Man, I remember this day. Wish I was there in person, but seeing it happen was just, wow. Greatest racing car era for me. That BEAUTIFUL Panoz there too, the open top and closed top Porsche cars, 333SP, and an RX-7.
Matthew Higashyama We're about 6-7 years away from having them able to compete at The Rolex Reunion (25 years) sadly they won't get pushed as hard as this video. I remember when Group C was old enough to compete there. Mazda really puts on a show, but 90% of the field is only pushing 7-8/10
The Porsche looks magnificent and is one of my favorite cars ever but that Ferrari engine made me want to cry. If only LMP could sound like that these days.
The Porsche 911 GT1 its the Mona Lisa of Sports Cars. So beautiful and graceful as it flies by at incredible speed. It's my #1 prize possession in my die cast collection, oh those lines flow so majestically. That engine its a symphony that would rival a Beethoven masterpiece. An awesome machine. Long Live Forever PORSCHE!
+Gravity pretty much is GTE currently, hell if those GTE cars took off their restrictors they could easily hit around 800bhp. Do the same to an LMP1H like 919 and you are looking at 1500+ cars.
The Porsche is exquisite!..I had the pleasure of racing it and still do..In Forza Motorsports 3 lol.. one of my favorite cars in the game..Big-time fan of old school IMSA racing!
This is how powerful the gt1 cars were back even the lmp ferrari 333sp even struggled trying to catch up strange how the cars that were ment to be slower (GT1) were actually faster than the faster class
Glad EA lost the Porsche license, because this car should have been in need for speed along side the CLK GTR, and McLaren F1, and it's the best handling car in project cars 2!
Boa noite meu Amigo !!!! Absolutamente assustador. Graças à DEUS que ficou tudo bem. Muito obrigado pelo vídeo e parabéns pelo canal. Abraço do Brasil......
Racing was better when manufacturers had to make homologation vehicles. The fact that you can actually buy a Porsche 911 GT1 and drive it on the streets is too fucking cool.
The warning signs were there, in the Porsche crash, for Mercedes CLRs at Le Mans the next year. Dalmas' crash is near identical to Dumbreck's. I wonder if there was something inherently wrong with the technical regulations for the last generation of GT1 cars?
Technically no... The Ferrari 333SP (the "SP" stands for "Sports Prototype") was a WSC (World Sports Car) that was basically the equivalent of an LMP car like the Audi R8... The Porsche was a GT1 car... But for this race, they were basically in the same class without technically being in the same class. If that makes sense. This was the first Petit Le Mans race ever and the first American Le Mans Series race ever, so they pretty much just lumped the GT1 cars like the Porsche and Panoz into a top class of cars that included the open top WSC cars because they were pretty much equal. GT1 cars were heavier but had more power. WSC cars were lighter and less power but they were roughly equal to the GT1 cars.
@@FriendlyCroock I know. But they did build street versions of each - Porsche built like 25 street legal versions of the GT1 911 and Mercedes built one street legal version of the clk gtr
@@The52car actually no - very close to each other but wsc cars were required to run iron or steel brakes, and lmp1 was allowed carbon brakes. I think the wsc cars also had less power via smaller engine air intake restrictors - I could be wrong about that one, but the wsc cars definitely had to use steel rotors. I think fuel capacity was also part of it - the GT1 cars could do like 15 lap stints and lmp1 roughly the same... So the wsc cars spent way more time in the pits getting fuel... Plus the steel or cast iron brake rotors needed to be replaced at least once during the race. Which cost each wsc at least a lap, usually 2. The ACO has ALWAYS been really strange and comes up with a lot of rules and regs that must make some sense to someone - but no sense at all to normal ppl
Yes, and no. Road Atlanta is a ton of fun to drive because it offers a huge variety of elevation changes into and out of corners, weird cambered turns, good fast portions, good technical portions...but all that combined over and over is hard as hell.
The gorgeous, flowing, curvaceous body of the incredibly sexy GT1-98. And the Panoz. Unless something outrageous hits racetracks beforehand, I will go to my grave believing that the Panoz GTR-1 is the ugliest racecar ever built.
