Port Canaveral Florida | HOW TO-Remove Water From Your Boats Fuel Tank Cheap!

Port Canaveral Florida as more states mandate E10 ethanol-blended gasoline for off-road use, the problem of water accumulation in fuel tanks grows. Hare at Port Canaveral Florida nothing can ruin your day faster than your engine dying from a lethal gulp of H2O. If you've been burning E10 for a while, you might already have what techies call water bottom.
At Port Canaveral in the past year there's been a lot of worry among boaters about the ill effects of soon to be-universal E10 ethanol blended gasoline. Depending on who's talking, the changeover from gasoline laced with methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) is a small problem, a catastrophe of biblical proportions, or somewhere in between ya think?

best advice to prevent! keep your tank 100% full
@deanfletcher8284

This worked like a charm. My issue was old gas, not water in the tank. I siphoned about 10 gallons when the stream slowed to a trickle, then I realized I had to loosen the gas cap to relieve the vacuum. To answer one question below, once you pump the bulb, gravity takes over, so you do not need to keep pumping the bulb to keep the flow going. Great video.

Syphon out fuel with a 1/2" vinyl hose from home depot, accessing the tank via the filler stem and transfered into a 5 gallon gas can. Finish up with a paper towel taped to a steel rod to sop up what ever remains. Use only Rec 90 fuel and have an inline water/fuel seperator filter - no issues.
@bbulliard
@bbulliard 3 года назад
the fuel line intake in the tank is 1/2" from the bottom, so this will leave 1/2" of water in the tank. best to remove the fuel sending unit and siphon with a fuel pump from the bottom to completely remove and always keep tank full

I found water in my boat gas tank, luckily I was on 1/4 of a tank. I gave this method a try and pumped until empty. 11 gallons in less than an hour. Worked well, thanks!

That's a very good idea for checking for water in the fuel. If you have a large water separator filter this method won't work. You have to go to the tank, but it's a great start
@FFLDealerSunnyvale

It could have been the rain but it was most likely the ethanol that drew the water in. ethanol is hydrophilic, thereby drawing water in from the outside since most boats have a vent. You should add gas stabilizer if you plan on storing your boat over 3 months to prevent the water buildup.

Usually there is an o-ring on the bottom of the fill cap. Replace when bad and lube it with a bit of grease to maintain seal

Once you let the gas set, and the water sinks, take a 1/4 in hose and siphon the water out and you can save the gas for your lawn mower.

The dip tube in the tank does not go all the way to the bottom -you won't get all of it. Tip the boat so the fuel tap is at the low corner and do it again. Or better yet, remove the sender and get the water into that corner (you can then see it) and use the same hose (removed from the fuel connection) and do it again. Water gets into all vented tanks. In the afternoon, the tank is full of warm humid air and water condenses from that air during cool mornings and it starts over the next day.
@HiTechDiver
@HiTechDiver 3 года назад
The big problem I see is that the fuel pick up tubes don't go all the way to the bottom of the tank; at least not in mine. My guess is that it prevents any sediment, that settles to the bottom, from being drawn up in the fuel line. Being that water is heavier than fuel, if there is water in the tank, there may still be water remaining in the tank below the level of what the pickup tubes will reach; problem not solved.
@captainedc
@captainedc 8 лет назад
That's great but u need to explain to your viewers that they need to let it sit a while so it seperates. Then pour it slowly from the top until it gets near the water on the bottom. Then stop and dump what's left. They should be using a water filtering funnel too since there is usually still a little bit left.

Great video - I'm a bit lost, however - did you throw the fuel you removed away? Was your tutorial about draining a fuel tank or was there an additional step (to separate the water from the gas and return the good gas to the boat)? Separately, I have a water separator - can't remember what it's called. If I believe I have a bit of water in the tank, will that handle the problem?
@TIMEtoRIDE900
@TIMEtoRIDE900 Год назад
You can carefully pour off the gasoline, but then burn it in a car or mower as it's water-saturated. The remainder should be dropped off at County Waste Services.
@davidsimmons6759

This will not work!!! Your Pickup tube does not go all the way to the bottom of the tank. You have to remove the sending unit from the tank and put a hose/tube to the bottom of the tank and pump it dry. Then you have to let it dry via evaporation for about a week or two and replace sending unit...no other mechanical method will get water out of your tank. Eventually the trapped salt water will corrode you tank and it will leak...then you have to rip out the deck or pull apart the inner liner from the hull. Major problem.
@PortCanaveralFlorida
@PortCanaveralFlorida 8 лет назад
David, my tank is plastic! I took my time and took what I could out of the tank and after a few weeks I only had to dump about 2 OZ out of the water separator... so, it worked for me!
@willc1097
@willc1097 7 лет назад
You definitely have to pull the sending unit and completely empty the tank. Just because you only dumped out 2 ounces doesn't mean there isn't a quart in the bottom of the tank.
@henrye718
@henrye718 7 лет назад
remove the ball, use a air compressor and a blow gun attachment, use it on the vent hose. Use only a little air at a time the fuel will come out very fast. Once empthy then refill the tank with a few gallons and do it again. There will be very little water left good enough for the engine to run, by your next fill up the engine will burn off whatever little water was left. You can also clog the vent and use a second hose through the fill hole and a rag to reach the very bottom if you have a odd tank that leaves a lot of fuel behind this will get almost everything out.
@bobbywartman2058
@bobbywartman2058 7 лет назад
This is a BAD recommendation. You can easily exceed the pressure rating on the tank..... and it happens FAST! It's easy to split the tank. Tanks are checked for leaks at 3 PSI. 3 PSI has to be seriously regulated.
@PortCanaveralFlorida
@PortCanaveralFlorida 7 лет назад
That's the best point, mine too is plastic! What water is left will eventually be gone, 1/2 cup of water to a 30 gal tank, and I'll catch that in the water filter!
@KarasCyborg
@KarasCyborg 4 года назад
@4:10, not wax candle, you mean Lava Lamp. I don't think it's a good idea to put gas in a milk plastic jug, it will start to crack and leak in an hour or so. You could probably just run 12v to the in-tank fuel pump and pump most of it out as well. If there are nooks and crannies in the tank, then water might hide in there only to surface when you refill the tank with Fuel.
@jayschaefer1760
@jayschaefer1760 8 лет назад
Please don't use a plastic container due to static charge that will explode gas. If you slide the plastic container it could cause a static charge and Boom!!!!.. Use a approved METAL GASOLINE CAN that should be grounded during the process, it's simple....good video , I do the same thing and it does work well...

A better method is to drain all the E-10 out, use it in your lawn mower or car. Put your flushing device on and run all the fuel out of the motor and drain the fuel filter. Go to this website for Pure Gas where Marine Gas is available: pure-gas.org/index.jsp. Yes, it costs more per gallon than E-10 but here are the advantages: No phase separation, better performance, more power and the motor runs cooler. Do not mix E-10 with Non-Ethanol fuel or you will plug up your gas jets with goo. Consider before they decide to switch to E-15 which will destroy any Marine engine and most older cars and trucks. Tight Lines!

If you want ALL the water out put a small bottle of 100% isopropyl alcohol in your tank. That alcohol will get any remaining water out and will not be a problem with gas/oil mixture as the water/isopropyl will evenly disperse into the fuel. Oil will evenly mix in this same fuel without causing engine damage. The brand Heet is NOT GOOD TO USE AS IT DOES PICK UP WATER BUT SETTLES TO THE BOTTOM OF THE FUEL. Oil does not mix into that settled Heet/gas mixture and may cause engine damage from lack lubrication. Put a few drops of water into a test tube, then put a little 100# isopropyl alcohol into the tube. You will be amazed when the water is gone.
