How To Remove Water From Your Gas

Is water in your fuel causing your small engine equipment to fail? Do fuel additives really work? Over 50% of carburetors I pull off have water in them. Check out this video to see if 4 of the most common fuel additives truly work - STP, Seafoam, Methyl Hydrate and K-100.
All 4 of these products claim to reduce or remove water or moisture from your gas. Let's see if this stuff works.
Why do you care? Water or condensation causes rust. The rust could eventually cause your carb to plug up and the engine will not start. This could get costly.
Warning: do not use methyl hydrate in a 2 stroke 2 cycle engine (such as your chainsaw or weedeater) where you mix gas and oil. I'll explain why.
Remember: water in your engine is a symptom. Why is there water in your fuel in the first place?

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. My gas hose was left exposed to a 5" + rainstorm. I forgot to drain it prior to fueling my riding mower. After siphoning 2 gallons of gas with 2 inches of water, I poured 2 bottles of HEAT in and used a syringe to inject HEAT into the carburetor bowl. Started up ran rough for 30 seconds or so, then took off and ran as normal. I used HEAT because, as you stated, "must say removes water". It does and it did.. Again, Thank you.

Best test I've seen yet Steve, very well done. In another vid it was shown that Sea Foam wasn't as effective but apparently it has high "lubricity" and preservation qualities to prevent breakdown of fuel over time.

Thanks for the tip on water removing products. I was using ethanol blended gas and let it set for a month. When I finally fired it up it wouldn,t hardly run. I have putting up with my bad running engine for a couple of weeks and today I put in some STP gas treatment, and am using ethanol free gas. Engine runs fine today, knock on wood. Thanks again for the test run on water removing products.

Extremely interesting and useful experiment, Steve. I do have a few thought to share. First, the water was already in the fuel BEFORE putting in any of the additives. If I personally encounter fuel that has water already in it and it is for a small engine, I don't bother trying to make that fuel useful again. I dump it and get fresh fuel. I don't see that it is practical to put additives into a gallon of small engine fuel in order to get rid of water that is discovered to be in the gas. Second, the way people want to use any of these additives is to mix the additive into the supply of small engine fuel at the time the fuel obtained, with the additive then being expected to PREVENT water from ever forming in the fuel. Stopping water from forming in fuel is an entirely different situation than removing water that is already present in fuel, at least in my mind it is. Unfortunately, nothing about this experiment demonstrates that putting any of these additives into a fresh batch of fuel will prevent water from building up from condensation or other causes over an extended period of time. I store my small engine fuel outdoors in one gallon plastic cans. The temperature changes, rain, and other conditions can allow small amounts of water to form or get into the gas over time. Thus what I want to know is how effective these additives would be over a two to four week period of time in keeping fuel free of water that forms on a repeating basis. We don't know if there might be a saturation point reached where these additives would then fail to prevent further water from forming in the gas. Perhaps you could do an experiment where the additives were mixed with pure fuel at the start than a small amount of water was added to each fuel container every day or two for a period of 30 days. It would be much more useful to know if any of these additives would still keep the fuel free of water at the end of a month. For those of us don't do a lot of mowing, a gallon of fuel might last 30 days and we don't want water in it at the end of that time. What I learned from this experiment in your video was still highly useful because if I fill my vehicle up with a full tank of gas and discover there is a little water in the gas that I purchased, I can easily get the water out using one of these additives and don't have to drain the tank or lose the fuel. I was very impressed with all these additives. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated your tests especially after going through an arctic blast for 5 days here in North East Tennessee . We experienced lows ranging between 3 degrees on some days to highs of 14 degrees on some . Night time wind chills ranged from 4 degrees below zero to 20 degrees below for the lowest . My 2000 chevy silverado ran fine until the blast hit us and now it will start for a split second and then die . I'm thinking that water in the tank , fuel lines and the fuel injectors has become frozen and is what is causing my problem (?) . I'm going to try the STP product because it looked like it took less product to get the same results as the K-100 and the M.H. . I left the Seafoam out of my preferences because I don't like nor do I trust it . Thanks so much for your time and efforts in doing this experiment - 2 thumbs up .

Thanks for doing an accurate, real life test! All the other guys take a quart of gas, add a cup of water, then 2 cups of treatment, and guess what, nothing happens. If you average a cup per quart? you would have a 1/4 tank of water in your vehicle, and no treatment is going to fix that. Your test shows how the treatment works on normal condensation in the tank.

Methanol (methyl hydrate) is a colourless liquid with an alcohol-like odour. It is one of the basic chemicals of the organic chemical industry. ... Methanol is completely soluble in alcohol, water and ether. Methanol is generally used for industrial manufacturing purposes and has a variety of different uses.
@therealbamachris1348
@therealbamachris1348 4 года назад
Methanol is also used in drag race cars that run "alcohol" instead of gasoline,, although the methanol I speak of is being bought from a company that sells it for cleaning kitchens and other places where food is made or processed. Example, a bakery ! This methanol is blue in color which is just a coloring, but no matter if we ran methanol, ethanol, or isopropyl alcohol, the Chevy big block power, Enderle mechanical stack injection in a rear engine rail dragster bracket car and it made no difference at all no matter what was used. It ran 5.02 ET in an 1/8 mile, 660' feet.

You can also go the other way , add water to E10 ( in a suitable container ) and shake which will bind the alcohol , decant the gasoline off to use in your chainsaw etc. Once the alcohol is removed the gas will have a slightly lower octane however . If you live in an area where straight gas is hard to get , this can be useful for small quantities of fuel on engines that were not designed to run E10 .

Good video , we should do it again with more water in the fuel until it is not absorbed to see what is best at this .

It would be great to add the recommended dosage and maybe 1.25x dosage to the gas and then titrate with water until it cannot couple anymore water and then observe the gas over time to see if it remains stable over time. A hazy mixture may be evidence of a micro emulsion. These are notoriously unstable.

Excellent project. It would be interesting to see if you added more of the water would still remove it as well.

LOL!! I loved how you took a big swig of the laboratory green test water!! Nice touch. That was very impressive. I was very impressed with the STP... same results with such a small amount of the product and not bad on the price. Thank you Steve!!
