Thanks for this,live in England am doing the Princess cruise in 24, your video really useful and looking forward to watching the rest. Have been to Dublin a few times with work but never gone further than the temple bar area, the locals are so friendly and helpful, a visit to a local pub especially if they have a music session on is not to be missed. Thanks again

The port of Dún Laoghaire used to be called Dunleary, an anglicisation of the old Irish name (like nearly all Irish placenames). It was changed to Kingstown in 1821 after a visit from the King of Engand, but when the country gained independence (or actually just before, during the War of Independence), it was changed back, however it was decided to adopt the old Irish language name, but the plain people of Ireland preferred the Dunleary pronunciation and stuck with that. It seems like only RTE newsreaders use the Irish pronunciation these days, which sounds like Doon Lay-our-ah . Great video thanks.

Whenever you see names of Irish towns, they’re in the Irish language so you might find the spelling odd in English, but perfectly normal in Irish, or they’re transliterations of their Irish names.

It is really offensive to Irish people (including me) to use the term "British Isles". If you search wikipedia for the term "British Isles" you will see that neither Irish nor British governments use that term because of how offensive it is to the irish since we Irish fought a bloody war in 1916 against the British for Ireland's (partial) independence.
@ftbeat
@ftbeat 10 месяцев назад
While I certainly know and understand the history of Ireland, the cruise itinerary is literally named “British Isles”. Maybe write to the CEOs of the major cruise lines and make them aware of how offensive they are being.
@traceymarshall5886
@traceymarshall5886 10 месяцев назад
@@ftbeat yes I actually have written to them. But by youtubers continue to use the incorrect offensive term British Isles it becomes normalise to use the offensive term towards Irish people. Only last week an American joked with me about "Black and tans" and he did not have a clue why such a term is so offensive. People brush it off as "this is the way it is" but completely continue to use the offensive term

@@traceymarshall5886 I find pushback from a lot of British people on here really disturbing. They don’t want to accept the fact that British Isles is a colonial term showing possession which has started in the 1600s for that very reason. I’m very surprised by Sweden and Norway. Most of these countries are very sensitive to Irish situation when it comes to Britain.. I had some English people tell me that the Irish were actually British

@ft encyclopedia "Britannica". What a surprise...not. What century are they living in? The British and Irish governments agreed in 1998 as part of the terms of the Good Friday Agreement, that the British government would refrain from official use of the term "British Isles" in connection with Ireland. As Dublin is the capital of Ireland and Ireland is not a British isle, your banner is misleading and offensive to a lot of people. Consider how many people on both sides of conflict have lost their lives because of the loose invocation of this now antiquated term. Forevermore the term predates by almost 3 centuries the advent of political correctness, as you now claim as your basis for standing by it's use. The rest of your video is fine, btw.
