Horse hockey ; any time you reduce turbulence by matching things up you increase the performance.
@francisbrackney2061
@francisbrackney2061 3 года назад
I was told by an old time engine builder, that this style of port matching most likely would gain several foot pounds of torque in the mid rpm range, and should also have a improvement in throttle response. But such as Martin said in his video, I was told that it is best to leave about 30 thousands of material around the edge of the gasket port holes to help with turbulence and to also help prevent vacuum leaks..

Forgive me if im not getting this right but you just got a blank piece to make your own gasket basically bolted it to the cylinder head to keep it from moving then got say a box cutter or a exacto knife and started cutting the holes to the exact size of the cylinder heads correct

Martinbuilt: what is your thoughts on Denso 12 hole injectors on the 4.0 L with the 68mm TB ?

I personally haven't tried it yet on my 4.0 but I am currently running the Bosch 280156161 that are 12 hole that work well. I think the Denso 12 hole injectors may be a little too much for the 4.0...

@matthewgurule2482
@matthewgurule2482 6 лет назад
If you have tried many brands, & 1 of those is the Fel-pro thats the higher end/quality 1. I'd make sure u bolting all the intake and exhaust bolts on correctly in the correct torquing sequence and correct torque value. When my exhaust manifold cracked bad, I used the Fel-pro 1 on my 1998 Jeep XJ. I have 4.0L in-line 6 in it too & used the Fel-pro when installing a new header instead of manifold and upgraded the engine mounts(main reason most the exhaust manifolds crack/not just heat). I did the bolts/nuts for mating the header and intake in the pattern my Haynes manual said to and to the torque value it said. I have 55-65K miles on it since then and no exhaust leaks.

Does any work need to be done to the head, such as removing any material, like what was done to the intake?
@matthewgurule2482
@matthewgurule2482 6 лет назад
He is matching his heads ports to his intake. The gasket was cut out from the heads ports, so is like a stencil or template of his heads ports when he puts it on his intake and removes the metal from those ports. Which now makes them "matched ports" like the title implies, so no he doesn't have to remove material on the head. I believe he said the head is a new Edlebrock head so definitely don't remove any for multiple reasons like warranty, already how they need to be for good performance, Edlebrock has done R&D to get the part right so y fix whats not broke, and etc. If factory I guess he could remove some, but then u have to remove it from the block before doing that so no metal shavings get in there, & to clean out the metal shavings. Really not worth it vs just matching the intake to them and doing what he did then polishing them up for smooth air flow.

Hey bud. I know that this is a 5 year old video, but it is the first time I have seen it. I heard you say that you made that manifold gasket, my question is, did you make it completely from a blank piece of gasket material? Or did you modify a gasket that you purchased? Either way, if you made it from scratch, what did you use as a template? Or if it is a modified version of a purchase gasket, what brand and part numbers is it? Please answer if you receive this memo, or make another video explaining these things. I am very interested, and I'm sure that many other jeep 4.0 folks are also. Thank you..
@martinbuilt

Yes I made it from scratch and I use the method that I show in this video to make the temp plate for the gasket. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-txCBBO_mI1Y.html I made the gasket from the cylinder as those ports are large then the intake.

Looking at your intake reminded me I wanted to hack up a couple intakes and make 1 larger intake with 2 shorter paths to the TB for all 6 runners, to make a 3 stage intake. Long for low rpms, shorter in steps based on rpm. It won't make more but it will shift the tq if I do it right : )

@martinbuilt

The gasket really didn't have much to do with it other than it was a means of transferring the info from the cylinder head to intake manifold. The reason I did this was because of the mismatch from intake manifold to cylinder head.

wouldnt it have been easier to trim a gasket rather than crewing up your manifold.. seems backwards to me.

I don't think you're entirely getting it I match the intake ports to the Head because they are smaller than the cylinder head. I used the intake gasket to transfer from the cylinder head to the intake manifold. The only reason I made my own gasket is because there was no gasket out there that match the cylinder head perfectly.

@matthewgurule2482 6 лет назад
This really has nothing to do with using the gasket after he's done. He is using the gasket only as a template/stencil to port his airways on the intake manifold, so they match his cylinder head. Its a cheap gasket that when used to do what he did, is a great and inexpensive way to match your ports for a better airflow for more horsepower, torque, and throttle response. Try only commenting when u actually know something on the subject at hand, instead of being a smart*** in a comment that only makes u look dumb.
