You really should have read the big wooden sign at Battle Rock Park for an interesting insight into the early history of Port Orford; there's so much more to the area than just scenic views. I grew up in Port Orford and still have deep affection for that sleepy little town, 60 years later.
Even in cruddy weather if you visit the northern-Cal/southern-OR coast it'll be hard to get the smile off your face for a few days. Sunny. fog-less days are frequent but in a tent or in the back of the car in a real winter storm--awesome! Motels are available along the way. Small towns, beautiful views...budget-in a couple extra days!
In 1977 i was studying in Vancouver BC! In summer 77 we decided with another couple to drive to San Francisco on a Chevy camper and we did that along the 101. Since then hasn't change much in Fact i did recognized that rocky bench close to the visitor center i think i still got a picture of it. That times were not so many ppl on the road but then we were young and fearless. Bring up nice memories thanks Russ.
This is one of our favorite beaches in Oregon (the top part you were at first 😁). There's also a nice little restaurant at the top of the hill above this beach near the parking lot called The Crazy Norwegian. Good food. We had a lot of fun playing at this beach and some fun video after dinner at the restaurant. Thanks for the video bringing it back home. 👍
Great video. I am headed out this coming weekend headed to Portland to see my daughter and will be in my van and plan on staying at all these places you are showing. As a newbee This gives me comfort that there are beautiful places that don't cost much. Travel safe and hope to meet you one day. :)
Hey Russ, the wife and I took that same route in "05" but we did not take the time to smell the roses. Now you really got my gumption up, this time we will take the trip and check out all the interesting locations. Thanks
Headed to the coast real soon. You gave me and the wife some ideas where to fish. We doing the Brookings going North to Coos Bay. You been a lot of help Thank you great video.
Thoroughly enjoying your drive up the Oregon Coast---Be sure to stop by The Home of the Dingbats Winos and Riffraff on the old part of Newport Waterfront and Nye Beach for a bowl of chowder at the Chowder Bowl
Hey Russ! Thanks! Smell the salt air and hopefully hear the screech of seagulls. It seems Oregon has done a lot of good things to preserve their beautiful coastline. East coast, take note. Stay warm and safe out there!👍🙋♀️
I have been there, Port Orford Park. When we worked in the forest on the coast there would be times it was hard to measure the tree heights because of coast fog would hide the tops of the trees. Yep, the Oregon coast can be windy and chilly. It is pretty.
Was there just before covid . Best restaurant in the fishing boat parking lot. The fish was sooo fresh 😀. Our son lives in Medford. Can't wait to visit again
When you live on the California or Oregon Coast, you have a morning fog bank that usually burns off in the afternoon and rolls back in during the night. Natural air conditioning. Of course, the sun can disappear for several months when the fog blankets the Coast.
Awesome video Russ! I found your channel today and was so excited to see somebody with a cargo trailer conversation. I am 22 and will be starting my own cargo trailer build in the next year. Keep up the good videos.
Lovely video. I have driven that area and it is gorgeous. I need to go again, visit the relatives. But I hope you head east after your Northern journey, otherwise you'll drive into the ocean!
I suggest Bastendorf Beach County Park or Sunset Bay State Park just past Charleston to camp at in Oregon's Bay Area. At Coos Bay/North Bend, follow the signs towards the beach. It's the busiest dead end hwy in Oregon and well worth what you find at the end point.
Thanks for all the good videos. Getting closer for us. Last day of the “W” word is August 14. Then from 9-1 until 1-1-2020 in Mess then heading to your town for the month of January. Took your suggestion and made reservations at Arizona Sun!!
Battle Rock! Been out there many times and hiked to the top of Humbug 2 or 3 times when I lived in Gold Beach.. Sad that you didn't touch on the history of Battle Rock. Oh well.
I'm really shocked at how open and accessible the beaches are on the West coast. Here in Connecticut they are mostly private and inaccessible. The public beaches are crowded and of course you have to pay to park and go to them.
Marie Jakowski Yeah, but keep in mind that Oregon beaches are cold and windy year round. That keeps crowds down. Oregon beaches are more a place to go see the view, then get back in you car and leave. And while Oregonians are proud to say that the beaches are 100% public, that doesn't necessarily mean the access is. Public access points can be as much five or ten miles apart. That said I love the Oregon Coast.
My dad runs the fv friendship (grey and red boat at 18:53). kinda crazy seeing the griffs restaurant open and in running order because its been closed a while now Still cool!
How do we buy one of your coffee mugs off your utube channel and buy you a up of coffee. Very interesting watching your journey. Drive safe. We are from Alberta Canada Ken
